Top 5 Chinese Spare Ribs

Canton on division st. in chinatown was/is the finest chinese restaurant in NYC hands down. the quality was top tier, the preparation simple and clean. the spare ribs at Canton were/are always loaded with meat, fresh, and of supreme quality.

Canton has been closed for the past several months with nothing but a mysterious message stating that they're temporarily closed.

I strongly suggest getting over to Canton if they reopen. Simply put, Canton set the standard for great chinese food in NYC and beyond.

Pizza Slice Crisis in NYC: The Ray's Syndrome

stay away from the dumps that are dumping on nyc - FAMILIGA is weak - they are expanding and their pizza has no passion.

Abitinos had the nerve to take Joe's vaunted corner store on bleeker and father demo square. why did Joe lick his wounds and take up sole residence in that lesser space (formerly Golden Pizza in the early - mid 90'2)

Villa Pizza on 42nd and 8th - a dump.

there are still some fine purveyors - Sal and Carmine, Fat Sals, Ben by Franks, Little Italy Pizza on e43rd, and more. patronize the good and defeat the bad.

Disagree with #4 on your list. I am a huge noodletown fan but find their ribs to be a bit cloying. Their roast pork however, is unparalleled.

In re: the ribs- They pay thier employees slave wages but if and when they ever stop striking, go to Saigon Grill, they have the BEST Asian spare ribs.

Pizza Slice Crisis in NYC: The Ray's Syndrome

I wish we had the same problem in Los Angeles, perhaps it will take a few generations to build the pizza biz here, but that's unlikely. There is one good place in LA, Mulberry Street Pizzeria in Beverly Hills. Unique and great thin sliced, not messy, perfect crust.

Here's some for you, Ed:

Those are From King Yum in Flushing (Established 1953, making it the oldest Chinese restaurant in Queens)

I rate them tops.

Pizza Slice Crisis in NYC: The Ray's Syndrome

I haven’t noticed the dire state of the slice, partly because I never look to pizza just for a slice. In the past few years I think pizza has been upgraded from the quick slice to the ultimate pie. Maybe we should stop looking for a great slice and start searching out and enjoying all the fantastic pies out there. To me a slice is considered fast food, while a pie is a destination meal. I think NYC pizza deserves to be treated as a destination meal.

My pizza pet peeve is when people don't cook the veggie toppings before baking. I get this soupy mess and a floppy crust. Can anyone make a crispy crust anymore? Darn those canned mushrooms, too.

Re: Adrienne's Slices.. I've been in twice recently, and no go on the slices. I asked, "When the heck are you going to have slices again?" and the response was to "check back in November, after the tables on Stone are gone..."

What the hey?!? Spurned, I went over to Rosario's and enjoyed a great italian sandwich, and later a pretty good slice of Red Velvet cake.. but I still wanted a sausage slice.. sigh

Best slices for my money in Manhattan are Patsy's in Harlem, Bleecker Street Pizza, Sal & Carmine's, Joe's, DeMarco's, Vinny Vincenz, Adrienne's (do they still do slices?), Muzzarella and wierdly, the Bayou Beast from Two Boots. -Guttergourmet

... patronize the good and defeat the bad

There was a time when my addiction to slices demanded at least one a day particularly if I was covering ground by foot. Today, I'm loathe to try a new place and don't really like most of the old ones I know.

Abitinos can't fill Joe's shoes, huh. I think I instictively knew that from the look of the place from a block away. Yet, it appears to have a thriving business and the eaters are smiling. One one hand, eating in the city is so much more rewarding than it was a couple of generations ago. At the same time, there have been so many unreasonable losses that it makes you wonder how many people actually appreciate good food.

I haven't lived here nearly long enough to have a favorite -- although I don't think anything could be better than Esca -- but I had a really great meal at San Ambroeus the other night. Great homemade pasta and an excellent special, baby lamb chops (with radicchio in a demi-glace -- I never got to eat like that in D.C.).

Like a lot of pricey upper east side-type Italian restaurants (though this one has relocated to the West Village), the whole trick in eating affordably and sticking to a reasonable caloric intake is ordering half-portions of pasta or risotto, then splitting an entree with your date or pal. Works every time, and you usually have room for dessert or extra cash for a good bottle of wine.

Hard to disagree about Babbo as one of the best restaurants in NYC. Have been there twice, met the man once. He was as nice and as gracious as he seems on TV, and, as you say, that warmth translates into the entire dining experience.

I would just say this: Babbo is almost impossible, for any number of reasons, to frequent. It is not what I would call an "everyday", or "neighborhood", kind of place, the kind of place you can manage on, say, a monthly basis. These kind of places deserve a category of their own, places like, say, L&B Spumoni Gardens out in Bensonhurst. While hardly charting in the top 10 for food, the pasta dishes (not to mention the sicilian slice) are rock solid. Plus, the cultural, neighborhood vibe can't be beat.

Have heard great things about Il Mulino. Anyone have any reviews?
