Food souvenirs from India?

Hi guys! I will be heading in a few weeks for 2 months of spontaneous train hopping and adventuring around Northern India (Delhi, Rishikesh, Leh, several places in Rajasthan and Gujarat, Agra, Varanasi, Bodhgaya, etc.) What wonderful ingredients/food items should I bring back? Preferably ones that aren't as easily available at local Indian grocers or anything that's more expensive to buy here in the U.S.? Thanks!

@LadyMarmalade
Yes, definitely bringing back a tiffin or two! I'm pretty excited to see how the dabbawallas maneuver a bunch of tiffins/dabbas aound town in person! Also, I haven't had any problems bringing food items back from our recent trips around Europe and Asia, so hopefully (knocks on wood) we'll have the same luck this time around.

@browntown
Thank you so much for the tips! I'm definitely going to keep an eye out for those food items since they all sound fantastic. I also just finished reading Chitrita Banerji's "Eating India". I'm really looking forward to tasting each region's specialties and the wide variety of cuisines across the country. I can't wait!

Thanks for the tip, Madelyn! I was actually planning of buying some prayer beads for some friends and I think they might like the rudrashka necklaces as well! Also, I love cumin and I hope eating there would only reinforce my fondness for it ;)

In Delhi the best place to find good food is Delhi Haat,near Kidwai Nagar.

Even Prince Charles went there for his lunch during his last visit to india.
You could try food at Vandana Shiva's Navdanya Organic Cafe at Delhi Haat.

Best Place in Delhi to find good quality sweets is; Haldirams B1/H8, Mathura Road New Delhi .

They have their branches allover delhi.

All others are fake and over priced.

As well, I found the address for the best laddoos in India. coincidentally, I had the box at home. It's:

Banarasi Mistan Bhandar
128/4 D Block, Kidwai Nagar Main Rd.
(near hanuman mandir), Kanpur

I spent my childhood there, and most spices or spice blends are cheaper here than they are in India for the same brand, but I live in Brampton, Canada where the population is predominantly South Asian so that might have something to do with it.

When you go to Jaipur, make sure you get the Dal Kachori. It's a deep fried flatbread stuffed with lentils. Wash that down with some sweet lassi. Rajashthani lassi usually has some sweets floating around in it making for a great dessert/drink in one.

When you go to Delhi, make sure to go to the Roopak spice store in Karol Bagh, because you will see just about every spice, spice mix, and spice blend in the Indian culinary universe there.

Be sure to pick up Amla Murabba, which is gooseberries preserved in syrup. They are usually available in most grocery shops, as well as the Roopak store.

A tiffin carrier makes a great gift. It is a stacked stainless steel, multi-compartment lunch box. I don't recommend trying to bring food or spices back into the United States. You might have problems with customs enforcement.
