what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
sahadi's is great. i think bierkraft, located not too far from sahadi's inthe king's favorite borough is also great. great beer but also a solid cheese selection as well as other artisanal import from pasta's to sauces, etc.
Milk + Beer = Bilk
hmm, i thought this was going to be an article about lacto stouts like mackeson's or hitachino's sweet stout...oh well. i'd still try this stuff, tho:)

i am entirely excited about this new site! hurray to ed levine and steingarten, two of our best food critics by far, for helping to get this thing started. with soooo many mediocre food blogs, forums, and general food sites around it is refreshing to find this one, which will hopefully outlast the others. cheers.

Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
coffee, without a doubt. hands down. tea, for me, is more an afternoon, 4pm, drink. something for a slight pick me up, or pass-the-time kind of thing rather than the fullblown caffeine-assault required in the AM.

STEINGARTEN AND I HEAR THE DINNER BELL!
My favorite food writer is Jeffrey Steingarten. I first encountered his wit on Iron Chef America and was immediately intrigued. Here was a man who had a seemingly highbrow way grounded by the use of very simple and straightforward expressions that directly and efficiently conveyed his erudition, opinion, and confidence. I could not but believe his observations and critiques of the contestants' presentations. After reading all his books I still have the same opinion of him, but now, thanks to his personable and quite approachable writing style, feel like I actually know him. Dinner would be awfully fun.

I agree with all of the above. If you have a big sweet tooth, go to Economy Candy on Rivington in the Lower East side. Tons of retro candy( candy buttons, lips, necklaces, Skybars, and on and on) It is so much fun!!!
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
zabar's, a huge emporium with all kinds of first rate deli and appetizing, breads, cheeses, prepared foods, coffees, cooking supplies, chocolates, pastries, olives, preserves...
ditto kalustyan's, a must visit for any serious cook.
chelsea market is big fun. make sure to visit the italian grocery store and have lunch and an espresso at zia tonia.

Chikalicious puddin is super amazing. We had the three puddings with hot chocolate (valrhona) All thre choices were so yummy, the presentation adorable-cutesy! The bite-size portion was perfect and the anglaise, one of a kind. A true NYC one of a kind. I also love the crepe place on rivington...another gem.

I would like to see the email a friend feature on here. I saw Ed's piece on Grom, the gelato place, and wanted to email it but was too lazy to open up my email and send a link.

Honestly, I think this site is fantastic! The only feature I would like to see added is the ability for readers to edit their posts in the "Talk" section. :)

I love this site. It's the food place I return to again and again. Since its inception, though, I have noticed that more and more questions appear in the "talk" list, and I find the sheer number of them overwhelming. I understand that your philosophy is to have the users control that area, but it might be nice to feature just a couple of questions a day and put the many other daily questions in some background space with a link. But this is a small quibble. Generally, I love what you do! The cookbook features are fabulous. I already owned "On Top of Spaghetti," but once you began featuring it, I had an entirely new appreciation for a book I already had.

Still can't type in a TITLE to any of my posts - the field is there but it is not clickable nor can I write in it...?
Have site feedback? We want to hear it!
I can't seem to post a Title to my Talk post :( There is no clickable field for some reason...I can see the "Title" field but cannot type into it (hence my title-less post on the Talk forum).
Otherwise, I love the site!

OK, I love this place but I never catch my typos until I hit post. A time limit where a comment could be deleted, or maybe just edited, for 5 minutes or so after posting would rock.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
tea on weekday mornings if i've gotten up early enough. caffé machiato on weekends, courtesy my little stovetop moka express.
cocoa for late-night movie watching.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
Coffee. I rarely drink cocoa.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
Cafe Bustelo - double - at home. Cocoa?
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
A cup of coffee at home and then a latte from Ninth Street Espresso. Tea is for the remaining portion of the day; cocoa is the weekend or the occasional treat drink.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
Starbucks coffee only!
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
Coffee. For me, cocoa is an occasional treat.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
Coffee...one cup at home in the morning, and one cup when I get to work.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
I don't drink coffee that often and I really don't care for anything hot in the morning. I actually love a diet soda in the morning and skip the whole hot beverage thing.
Do you prefer cocoa or coffee in the morning?
I'm a full blown coffee drinker in the morning and sometimes lasting throughout the day. I like tea in the evening or on a cloudy afternoon.
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
baha: you're absolutely right, i mixed up the names between the essex cheese and saxelby's. i feel bad about that, because they're so nice at saxelby's.
addendum to the original post: the last time i posted a list of specialty markets i was thinking about cheese. today i'm thinking about chocolate.
it's no secret that people are opinionated about their chocolate and there are too many places i enjoy on a semi-regular basis to name here, so i'll mention my favorite chocolatier: kee ling tong. (www.keeschocolate.com).
if you are looking for a comprehensive list of chocolate shops in nyc, i happened across this list in my online 'travels' this would be the best i've found: http://www.tenementcity.com/map_chocolate_ny.html
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
@the word yes: You forgot Saxelby's Cheesemonger, also at the Essex Street Market and the best of the lot, I feel. Btw, I don't think Essex Cheese is there anymore, if it's the stall that sold one kind of cheese only (gruyere?); I think it was a short-term rental.
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
landi's -- brooklyn, ny. italian salumeria
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
Russ and Daughters for first-rate appetizing and other goodies.

Kalustyan's, already mentioned.
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
i'm thinking a lot about cheese today, so here are my cheese picks:
essex street market has two vendors - essex st. cheese market (www.essexcheese.com) and formaggio kitchen (www.formaggio-kitchen.com).
i can't think of mentioning cheese without mentioning murray's cheese (www.murrayscheese.com)
dean and deluca on prince and broadway also has an excellent selection (deanandeluca.com) as well as the best selection of wild mushrooms in nyc.
if you want to visit an excellent restaurant and try a flight of cheeses, to me, there is no better spot than artisanal. (www.artisanalbistro.com) also, don't miss their cheesecake for dessert. personally, i'm not a big fan of cheesecake. two places have made me reconsider: artisanal and chikalicious.
maybe later on tonight when i get a chance, i can recommend some good cardiologists to you! you might need them after all this cheese!
what are your favorite markets/ specialty food stores in NYC?
Kalustyan's...for spices and rices and pappadums and nuts and candies and chutneys (their own are spectacularl) and ice creams and their own prepared foods (try the lammajun, often likened to a lamb pizza, which it both is and isn't). I rarely walk out of there without something that I've never tried before, and I've been a regular K's shopper for more than twenty years. Every month, some (if not most) national food magazines will list it as a source for some hard-to-get ingredient or other.
