Bovine Bliss Found at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia
1. If you go by Metro, you can avoid the "sweaty uphill walk from the Rosslyn metro station" by getting off the train at the Court House station. Rosslyn and Court House are about the same distance from Ray's, and the Court House walk is downhill.
2. Ray's burgers are good, but this DC resident prefers the Colletti's Smokehouse at Spike Mendelsohn's “Good Stuff Eatery” near the Capitol, or the Bistro Burger at the Matchbox (Chinatown and Eastern Market locations.)

'Advertising Age' Talks to Condé Nast CEO About 'Gourmet' Shutdown
"Do you shut down the title that's beautiful and smart with good writing, the employee asked, and go for the title with recipes and pictures of cheeseburgers?"
Hmmm. If you look at the next most recent entry on today's Serious Eats, you'll find a picture of cheeseburger.

$29.95 for America's Test Kitchen website?
I dropped CI because of terrible customer service.
1. When I first subscribed, they sent me 2 copies of the same issue.
2. One of their telemarketers called me to offer a book "on approval." I told her--twice--not to send it, but she did anyway. I returned it w/a complaint letter.
No apology from CI. No reply of any kind.
I thought the issues were both useful and beautifully produced. Same for the web site. But not worth the irritation.

Dear AHT: The All-In Burger at Red Hot & Blue in Dallas, Texas
Red Hot & Blue isn't just a Texas chain.
Click the "outside Texas" button on the linked site, and you'll find it in a number of other states. I'm in Washington, DC, and regularly visit a Virginia branch. This write-up made me realize I'm overdue for another visit.
Served: My Plea To Tip Kindly
No matter how bad the service, I always tip enough so that when I later realize that I left my gloves in the restaurant, I won't be too embarrassed to go back for them.

as of today, october 30th, they do sell fries, we went last night, burgers were awesome, cooked perfectly to temp, one medium rare, the other well done. the fries leave something to be desired.....they should stick to the alternates, corn, mac & cheese, chips....and also, please dont offer cokes in plastic bottles. the vintage sodas are awesome. All in all, best burger ever by far. I grew up in Chicago, been out west for in-and-out, the spot in Kenosha wisconsin, Culvers.....and 5 guys out here.....Rays is by far the best!
'Advertising Age' Talks to Condé Nast CEO About 'Gourmet' Shutdown
They should have 86ed editor-in-chief Reichl, brought in someone with an actual sense of taste that was more impotant than her sense of entitlement and self-importance, and possibly have saved what was once one of the finest magazines published in America.
'Advertising Age' Talks to Condé Nast CEO About 'Gourmet' Shutdown
condé nast is missing the point. they just killed off their crown jewel of food magazines because of some ridiculous numbers game. i find it telling that they are keeping the "Gourmet" name for their online properties and also for future books — they know it's worth more than some stupid subscription numbers, but they won't admit it openly. just a few weeks ago i had renewed my subscription to Gourmet for 3 years. if they try to convert my subscription to one for Bon Appetit, i'm going to cancel, and they will certainly get a letter explaining why.

@bcarter3: Yes, the irony was not lost on me. Although I'm not sure if that's a fair comparison. Sure, BA is a little more mass-market than Gourmet, but hasn't Gourmet done something on burgers before? I don't know. I'd have to look in our library here of old Gourmet issues.

@richopp - with regards to a BBD, if this happens any serious burger reviewer would class the burger a FAIL and never try it again, at least, in the short - medium term. Too many other quality burgers to eat out there!
Bovine Bliss Found at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia
Ray's is my absolute favorite. I always get the Mack burger.
I love Five Guys and Good Stuff Eatery too - it just depends what you're in the mood for. They're all good but have different charms to them:) D.C. has become a great town for burgers!
Bovine Bliss Found at Ray's Hell Burger in Arlington, Virginia
I moved last week, but I used to live across the street from this place and I'm sad that it was a big disappointment for me. After all the hype and press, I just didn't enjoy my burger any more than Five Guys or Good Stuff Eatery. And since it's such a hassle usually with the line, no seating to be found inside, cash only, and no fries, I just prefer other burger eateries. People tend to freak out when I say this, and especially like to say that I shouldn't judge a burger by its side dishes, but that was really the final straw for me. The tater tots are gross, and I can't just eat bite after bite after bite of mediocre burger with no fries or decent side to balance it out, and yes, I love burgers!

mmmm, Ray's Hell Burger. Their mac & cheese is out of this world. The burger was fantastic too. Getting there from B'more was a hassle, the place was PACKED on a Friday night (and I am not a fan of crowds), parking was a nightmare, but the burger was actually worth the trip.

For less crowding, a shorter walk from the Metro, and to have your burger with a glass of shiraz in a pleasant air-conditioned environment, go to the bar at Ray's the Classics in Silver Spring instead. They don't quite have the full complement of options but you're more sure to get exactly what you want. And the bartenders are awesome. And if you're not in the mood for the burger, their other bar menu deals are tremendous.
I miss DC. And its burger selection.

@bcarter3: If only I knew that beforehand..doh! :( Ah well, burning calories isn't the worst idea in the world.
I also went to Matchbox! But I got the sliders.
Five Guys Burgers
I maybe be a freak or a food snob but I'm not crazy about five guys for either their burger or fries. Their burgers are becuase it seems pointless to brag about using fresh high quality ingredients and then they charboile it until it's grey. Gahhh. And there are too many fries.
Fortunatly there is a local steakhouse joint in my neighborhood called Ray's the Classics and they have incredible burgers that can be cooked just to medium.
Five Guys Burgers
i have to say, even though i live in new york where there are plenty of great burgers, i am drawn back to five guys over and over again. i like the variety of toppings and the fries, which you can get with a free side of mayo.
Five Guys Burgers
I managed a Five Guys for some time...the burger is 3.4 oz (give or or take) and it is loosely hand rolled and then grilled and topped with your selection of toppings. I decided to work with Five Guys because EVERYTHING is fresh, they hand wash and tear their lettuce, hand slice tomatoes, onions etc... They really care about their product and it hasn't changed since they opened their first store. The only thing I didn't like is that they serve a "kosher style" hot dog. It's not really kosher and I always thought it was false advertising to call is "kosher style", but I think you're really getting a pretty good deal when you eat there. They even fresh cut their fries and let me tell you it's hard work to cut 300lb plus of potatoes a day!
Five Guys Burgers
Five Guys is very popular where I live. Their fries are out of this world and everyone loves them. I don't eat meat so I don't personally know what the burgers are like but all my friends rave about them as well.
Five Guys Burgers
Burgers are way above ave. and the fries are some of the best .The fries are double fried to order and they are plentiful . My fries are better because I fry them just once . However I don't feed thousands !
$29.95 for America's Test Kitchen website?
I bought a year of web access to cooksillustrated.com in Jan, 2008. In Jan,2009 I got e-mail notice that they were going to automatically renew for another year at $19.95 (60% increase) and that the 'normal' rate was $34.95. I called 800-526-8442 and told them I would renew at $12.50 but if the price went up to $19.95 I would not renew. They renewed for one year for $12.50. If they're willing to charge me $12.50, I'd prefer that they just do so instead of making me jump through these hoops.
Five Guys Burgers
Who wants an over done burger and that is they only way they will prepare them? Is the quality of their meat so poor that they have to nuke their beef?
Five Guys Burgers
It's like the In-and-Out of the Mid-Atlantic. Every one that I've been to serves the thin fries, fried in peanut oil. They don't get the fries in frozen either. There's always a sign in the restaurant that says where they got their potatoes from that day.
And the small fries size is more than enough for two people. They put a small cup in your bag, then scoop the fries into the bag. I think a large fry order would get you fewer fries, because the cup itself takes up more room!

it does seem like they're trying to figure out something that works--'the deal' changes each time i receive e-mail from them..the convenience of having
their resources online may be worth some charge, though i can't see it
for mag subscribers..i've also found that between BEST RECIPE and BAKING ILLUSTRATED (two cookbooks i'd take to the desert island) that
most everything can be found--at least it's more expedient than searching
through piles of old issues! amazon sells both used (like new) very inexpensively, and they are definitely worth the one time expenditure.

that would be "subscription questions" in the second paragraph :(-

I have been a subscriber to CI for more years than I can remember, and have kept every single issue I have received. So it seems strange that I would subscribe to the website, but I really find it useful. That being said, I completely agree with the previous comments regarding horrible customer service.
I have had adequate, but not stellar customer service regarding questions (we move a lot as we are a military family -- FYI -- call several months in advance if you want to get it at your new location without a break in service). My biggest problems have always been when it came to their BOOKS; I have received two books that I had declined from telemarketing calls. I finally complained loud enough, I think, that they don't send them anymore. When they sent me a chicken cookbook that I had declined, they wanted ME to pay the shipping back. I flat out refused, so they sent a shipping bill to return it.
I finally cancelled Cook's Country (probably because finding the rooster every month was becoming too much of an obsession! HA!) because it seemed redundant to CI, and we're not a big casserole family -- too much similarity to Taste of Home for my tastes (which has a FREE website, BTW). I think it is absolutely idiotic that the two sites aren't tied together under the same subscription, and that there is no subscription break for magazine subscribers.

I'm a personal chef and use the web site for many of my dishes, so I'll keep it. However, I read the magazine in my local library and then use the web site since the index is always up to date.
As far as charging, get used to it folks, the days of "everything free on the internet": is coming to a close! I too also had a bad experience with their customer service.

Your comments are right on target. I subsribe to Cook's Illustrated and Saveur magazines. Cook's Illustrated is worthwhile to get recipes from occasionally, but Saveur has more authentic and varied recipes. Saveur's website is entirely free for all the recipes dating back to the first issue. Cook's Illustrated doen't warrant the subscription fee to access its site. I have all the issues, I simply get online to check certain recipes and the issue dates, I then look them up. They state that there is a charge because they have no advertisers...........they need to start accepting them. If you are desperate for a recipe, you can sign on for the trial subscription, and cancel before the trial time expires. Epicurious is the site that has all the Gourmet and Bon Appetit recipes, and they are all free. Cook's Illustrated is a bit behind the curve, but so is the bow tie that Mr. Kimball wears.

I understand why they don't have advertising -- it makes them less obligated to say nice things about any brands or products, and that's the image they want to have. Like Consumer Reports.
And not having revenue from advertising is a huge chunk of money. Subscription money isn't a huge revenue stream for publications. Advertising is where the real money is. So they have to charge more to stay afloat.
I agree that it would be nice if the online content was all free to subscribers, but that's their choice.
Right now, the publishing industry is struggling to figure out how to handle Internet distribution. In order to keep publishing, money has to come from somewhere, either from advertising or from selling the content. If you give away online content for free, either the print publication is making enough money to support the web, or the web publication needs to bring in revenue, either from web ads or web subscriptions. Readers don't want to pay for web subscriptions because so much other content is available online for free. Online ads? Heh.
I think it's going to be a while before the print publications figure out how to handle their online content.
