Eat For Eight Bucks: Paprika-Braised Chicken with Chickpea Puree and Crispy Shallots

It's great to see salt pork come out of the closet...it's been hiding in baked beans and new enlgand clam chower for too long.

Pimneton is smoked paprika. Look for it in the Badia spice section of your market.

How could I forget...Bamm Automat is not to be missed. It's worth the trip for a unique experience and a quick nibble.

How could anyone not like Chinese? The pork buns and roasted rice cakes at Momofuku are incredible.

The Bridge and Girmaldi's is a great idea...remember to bring cash. They don't accept credit cards. Skip the overrated Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory and go to Jacques Torres' original store instead.

Lombardi's is also a NY original and Rice to Riches is right across the street. Talk about unique.

If they are into wine, go to ino...it's adorably small with a great selection of wine and paninni.

If you live in an area that has an "edible" magazine that's the one to subscribe to. They all focus on locally grown and produced foods. Great recipes and photo's.You can also pick up copies for free at advertisers locations but subscriptions help to support the magazines and the local foods movement. FYI: I am the publisher of edible South Shore, we cover southeastern Massachusetts.

I love Fine Cooking. I used to get Cook's Illustrated, but found the "one and only" attitude more annoying than endearing.

so i am a little late trying this recipe but i am new to the site

the only thing that went wrong was that the skin didn't stay cripsy, started to get soggy when you cover and simmer

i added chorizo but this will make the price way higher

great dish! thanks

I am un-lurking to tell you how much I enjoyed this recipe! It was great! I substituted bacon for salt pork and added the whole package of spinach instead of half (I wanted to increase the veggie-to-chicken ratio). I also made a roux with the bacon fat in the pan, since I didn't have corn starch.

I'm assuming seasoned flour means salt and pepper? I put in hot smoked paprika into the mix, which was yummy. I was a bit timid about it this time, but next time I'll put in more. I used sweet smoked paprika for the broth mixture.

So yeah, a lot of changes, I suppose, but still a wonderful recipe.

Made this tonight and we absolutely loved it! Wouldn't change a single thing about it.

Chinese is the way to go for inexpensive and exotic. I would recommend Jin Fong's for dim sum (not so much because of the quality, but because it is a unique experience) or get the Hot Pot at Grand Sichuan on Canal.

other than that, Fish on Bleeker is a good spot for oysters (6 and a beer for $8) and Otto is a good spot for lunch (and affordable for a mario batali place). Becco is also good, as they have a 3 pastas (unending) for $22.
