Cook the Book: 'Summer on a Plate'

I thought it would sound sappy if I said "my mother," but many others obviously had the same experience. My mother cooked fabulous food. Many of my friends in our small South Georgia town had never heard of the things she made. Hollandaise sauce was a mystery to lots of folks in the days when I grew up. Not to my mother. She also made her own mayonnaise but I refused to eat it. I loved that stuff in a jar from the supermarket. But I did love virtually every thing else she made.

Strange combos

As a child, I loved potato chip sandwiches on white bread with mayonnaise.
Yesterday I saw someone with an urge that, frankly, was disgusting. He came into a restaurant where they serve good southern food. Many of us Southerners like hot pepper & vinegar on our greens (turnips and collards). This many picked up the pepper/vinegar bottle from the table and took a sip.
Didn't mind that he liked it, but hated that he just drank from the bottle. Of course I told the server, who winced and moved the bottle after the man left.

Does Activia Yogurt Offer Any Health Benefits?

I tried Activia and it made me sick--an upset stomach. I object to its health claims and would not touch it again.

Does Activia Yogurt Offer Any Health Benefits?

I've made a yogurt drink for breakfast five days a week for 30+ years (nonfat plain blended with fruit juice & fresh fruit such as OJ, banana & cinnamon). No digestive problems. As a woman in her mid 60s, there's a great side benefit...no loss of bone mass with age. I looked at Activia and realized the high sugar content would add 26,000 calories to my diet which translates to 7+ pounds with no added benefit. And it costs more than other yogurts. I believe yogurt is a beneficial dietary food for most anyone not lactose intolerant. Whether the Activia additive makes a difference, only you can decide.

I am a 43 year old male. i am overweight and i eat what i want when i want it. i know it is bad...I was asked by my wife to try this each morning. I have had numerous issues with not being regular and so forth. I am beginning the second week and i have to say this stuff has worked VERY well for me. I have not changed my diet in any way other than to eat one of these per day in the morning. Pain gone, constipation gone, hemmoroidal bleeding gone. I hope it continues. i will let you know if things change. i wish everyone success in feeling better.

Another thing is delivering pizza is one fo the most dangerous in the U.S. I'm sure Papa Johns isn't hurting that bad for money and if they are then they need to get out of the pizza business.

I personally would have to say that Papa Johns will most likely stop delivering, because there is no way people will deliver for them. First of all Their paycheck would be very small, because they have to claim their tips. Second the drivers would not make enough money to pay for the use of their vehicles. I personally never liked Papa Johns anyway. If they have to be that greedy then I really do hope they go under, the sooner the better. this way they wouldn't be able to take advantage there their employees. Another point is they are delivery drivers not waiters. them getting tipped has nothing to do with Papa Johns.

If you are a Papa Johns customer then try to always tip the delivery driver in cash so that way they won't have to report them and papa johns will have to pay them minimum wage.

Here is another site I found that is more up to date. www.tiptheman.com it gives the customer all the info they need to know.

I think the ghost of Julia Child will be with most of us, whether or not we recognize it, and these days, I love watching the Iron Chefs.

I like Paula Deen because most of her recipes are similiar to my Mom's southern style.

Rachael Ray is my mentor. She has several T.V. shows and a magazine and she does it all in 30 minutes. Thanks for the contest. I would love to win that book.

My mentors are all of those wonderful people who frequent farmers markets and cook simple, fresh, wonderful food for their families. The people in Italy have the right idea, they cook what is best, what is fresh and then share and enjoy their wonderful cuisine with those they love. Truly the way to live and enjoy life!

My mother - absolutely! She taught us to be fearless in the kitchen and I still call her sometimes when faced with an unfamiliar cut of meat on sale.

I did learn from Julia Child and other TV chefs over time, but without the give-and-take of a true mentoring relationship, I can't count any of them.

My parents first off...then (don't laugh), my inspiration was Justin Wilson and Leah Chase but we're talking a long time ago. Can't tell I'm Southern gal, can ya? Nowadays, Ina, Paula, Bobby, Mario...Can't name them all. Thanks Food Network!

My Aunt Penny opened the doors to the wonders of cooking, when I was 14. I spent a month with her helping her with her newborn twins and during that time she tutored me in the kitchen and taught me all sorts of recipes; some of which I still use today. The day I went back home she gave me a three-ring binder so that I counld insert recipes that I collected from newspapers, magazines, etc. I was bitten by the culinary bug!

I love cooking and searching cookbooks for different recipes, but have lots of favorite ones, too, passed on from my family and friends. Thanks for having the contest!
