Weekday Brunch/Breakfast in Manhattan?

Awesome suggestions guys, thank you so very much!!! I went to Pies n' Thighs today, and loved the biscuits n gravy, but will certainly make some more rounds on the brunch circuit this week. Really appreciate it.

Cook the Book: Watermelon Margaritas

ha, this entire weekend I was making watermelon margaritas to accompany my gardening efforts, it is indeed the season! I agree with Caroline, no need for the watermelon liqueur. If you think it needs extra sweet, add a touch of triple sec, does the trick. mmmmmmmm, i think i need another one now...

Cook the Book: Vegetable Tortilla

@kplays totally with you on the baguette, such a perfect sandwich. I love making up a few tortillas and then having them for sandwiches all week. I like a little olive oil on the bread instead of mayo. I almost lived on tortilla when I lived in Spain during my unfortunate no-red-meat-or-pork eating-stage (Whyyyyyyyyy did I do that while living in Spain??? What was I thinking??)

Black Pepper: Friend or Foe?

any one else out there find white pepper revolting? I wish I didn't... because otherwise perfectly lovely dishes would then cease to be excluded from my consumption; including a hearty bloody mary at brunch over the weekend. damn you white pepper!

Jamie Oliver - Taking On Obese America?

In the next two weeks, Congress is expected to vote on the reauthorization of the Child Nutrition Act, which funds the $12 billion-a-year school-meal programs, among others. It's the first reauthorization in more than five years, and President Obama, who has pledged to end child hunger by 2015, wants to add $10 billion to it over 10 years.

What can you do? Email your legislators to tell them you support helping schools serve real food. Here is a link that helps you find your reps http://bit.ly/cZ2qhl

Jamie Oliver - Taking On Obese America?

@missjess Jamie actually began the fight against unhealthy food in schools in the UK in 2004. Jamie created a petition and with the signatures took it to 10 Downing Street on 30th March 2005. As a result of his movement the government pledged an extra $550 million to improve the standard of school meals, to provide training for lunch ladies and equipment for schools. http://www.jamieoliver.com/school-dinners/my-manifesto

ah, and Jamie will also be presenting a petition to the White House about food in schools: jamiesfoodrevolution.com/petition

Jamie Oliver - Taking On Obese America?

@tayter right on, my thoughts exactly.

Too many people in this country rely on processed and fast food, and have little idea about how to integrate a balanced diet into their everyday routine or cook a meal for themselves using unprocessed ingredients. And in the town Jamie goes to for the show, the kids are served pizza for breakfast, at school! At a minimum, this will be a wake up call for some people, but hopefully it will inspire folks to help make a change in their own community if need be. Whether you like Jamie Oliver or not, how can you be against a campaign that wishes to help children have healthy food and learn how to cook for themselves?? Does that really fall into the category of a pushy nanny state? If you eat well, and your children eat well, and you know how to cook for yourselves, then hooray, no need to get so defensive and angry about this. What is the problem??

Serious Eats Gift Guide: Books For Young Foodies

my favorite food book when i was growing up was "The Elephant and the Bad Baby" about an elephant that picks up a (bad) baby and the baby asks the elephant to use his long trunk to steal him all sorts of goodies throughout the town. They help themselves to ice creams, pies, buns, crisps, biscuits, lollipops and apples, and the shopkeepers follow them down the road shouting and waving.
