Cook the Book: 'Canal House Cooking Volume 4: Farm Markets & Gardens'

I visit the Green City Market and the Wicker Park farmer's market in Chicago. My parents and their friends grow lettuce, kale, chives, perillo leaves, tomatoes, cucumbers, and peppers in their garden and often exchange their bounty. Friends have also brought back blueberries and now peaches from Michigan farms.

Healthy & Delicious: Avocado and Corn Salsa

i make a similar version of this salsa with double the cooked corn, 1/2 avocado, shallots, lime juice, cilantro, and jalapeno and it's delicious. with more corn and less avocado than the above recipe, the salsa works nicely as a side dish to pork tenderloin or on top of fish tacos. one tip is to add the lime juice to the warm corn after it's been cut off the cob and it really absorbs into the corn nicely.

Cook the Book: 'What We Eat When We Eat Alone'

When I cook for myself, I look for "pantry" meals that are fast and economical, with a few ingredients. One of my favorite meals is a chinese style steamed white fish with scallions and ginger, topped with soy sauce and oil, which I can prepare while the rice is cooking. When I go to the asian grocery store, I always purchase individually wrapped frozen sushi grade tilapia fillets ($2-$3) that take only a few minutes to defrost and cook.

Chicago: Best Food Neighborhoods?

Having lived in various Chicago neighborhoods for the past 8 years (Wicker Park, Bucktown, Logan Square, Pilsen) I would say Lincoln Square has been my favorite neighborhood for eating and cooking. It has lots of great restaurants (Los Nopales, El Asadero, Nu Lan for great banh mi sandwiches, Cho Sun Ok, Bistro Campagne, Cafe Sel Marie, Opart Thai), grocery stores (Harvest Time, Lincoln Meat Market) and a great kitchenware store, the Chopping Block. There's a farmer's market every Tuesday, and every year, there's Mayfest, which celebrates the neighborhood's German roots with brats and beers. More importantly, the location makes it easy to get to different types of grocery stores (Trader Joe's, Whole Foods, Chicago Food Corp, Paulina Meat Market, Patel Bros.), restaurants (San Soo Gap San for Korean BBQ, Spacca Napoli, Kuma's, Urban Belly, Hot Doug's, etc.) and other food neighborhoods (Devon St, Argyle/Vietnam town). It's a lovely lovely neighborhood with lots of cafes, outdoor beer gardens, a great park, and even a movie theater.

Snapshots from South Korea: Bbopgi, a Sugar and Baking Soda Candy on a Stick

i grew up in korea in the 80's and back then, the street vendors would have us make our own. we would grab a ladle, a stick and some sugar, and then crowd around a charcoal stove to make the candy. it was magical (and dangerous, now that i think about it) how we could turn granulated sugar into candy with a bit of baking soda and heat.

The Mustards in My Fridge; Which Are in Yours?

quite a few commenters mentioned trader joe's mustard. while i love trader joe's, i'm gonna have to pass on their mustard. the label's lovely and it's cheap, but it doesn't pack any flavor. i stand by grey poupon, french's, and robert rothschild farm mustards.

Candlelite: Enjoy the Pizza, Fall in Love with the Garlic Fries

My childhood home was two blocks from Candlelight, in Rogers Park. I've driven past the restaurant for the past 20 years, never realizing they had such good food. Thanks for posting such hidden gems in Chicago that would otherwise never register on my radar.
