The best poppyseed dessert is from Paris - the Sasha Finklezstajn patisserie on the rue des Roisiers - ask for the 'pave au pavot', an incredibly rich square of buttery pastry, packed with a thick layer of poppyseed filling... totally amazing. And they freeze quite well!

The Upper West Side H&H Is Apparently Closed For Good. What Does It Mean to You?

OK, so H&H weren't the best - but I hope this doesn't mean the anti-carb brigade are gaining ground... personally I think the schlep to Absolute is totally worth it, especially for the pumpernickle raisin ones - and you can work up more of an appetite for them too.

A Sandwich a Day: Tuna Melt at Peninsula Creamery, Palo Alto, CA

The tuna melt at Good Enough to Eat on Amsterdam Ave in Manhattan is fantastic - open face on home-made whole wheat bread, so the tuna/bread ratio is more generous.

Do You Always Eat Breakfast for Breakfast?

I have to have something sweet in the mornings - so if it's a bagel it has to be cinnamon raisin with sweet honey raisin cream cheese - I love whitefish salad on pumpernickel bagels but it would seem heresy to have one first thing! I can easily eat something like carrot cake or a scone with jam and quark - or leftover plum or apricot crumble if I've had people round for dinner. And of course there's there traditional post Thanksgiving pumpkin-pie-for-breakfast the day after... and since I am British, mince pies for breakfast throughout December - only the posh ones from fancy bakeries though. In fact I had one this morning with some fromage frais on the side.
