The Nasty Bits: Chicken Feet, Reconsidered

Never had it fried either. It sounds like it would be really good.

I have to agree that it is wrong to compare crunchie to butterfingers....they are nothing alike.

I really want to try toffee crisps now. That sounds so good.

Cross-Border Shopping Guide: Canada

If you have a Costco card, you can enter the Canadian Costcos...so you can buy everything in bulk! Unfortunately, they do not have everything as they are not really Canadian like Shoppers or Superstore/Loblaws/No Frills (only place to get PC stuff).

Cook the Book: 'Serve Yourself'

I like to make for dinner gourmet sandwiches that you can get at fancy restaurants for lunch. It's stuff that I normally wouldn't make for dinner with other people (doesn't seem very sit-down meal to me) but takes too long to make for a quick lunch. Usually the prep is longer than for a proper meal (like reducing red onions in brown sugar and balsamic vinegar to make a marmalade type of topping etc) but its so good and still cheaper than a $15-20 sandwich.

A Year Later, FDA Proposes Menu Labeling Requirements

I don't see how the government is telling people what to do. As many of the annoyed people here have pointed out, they will eat what they want regardless of the calorie count. In a nanny state, you won't be allowed to do that. You have the choice to make your own decision but at least it is a more informed decision. At Starbucks, it did make me think about whether I really needed a Grande or would a Tall have been enough when I saw the calorie counts.

The Starbucks and McDonalds I've visited in the Seattle region have the calorie counts on the menus (so far no franchises have closed because of this!). I don't find it that distracting even though I'm not used to seeing it in Canada. The majority of people in the world have the capability to read a menu with a few more numbers and words. It's not like a Starbucks or McDonald's menu was so complicated to begin with (certainly no Tolstoy novel...please don't insult Tolstoy by comparing it to a ~20 items drink menu). Plus putting the calorie values isn't that many extra words. It wouldn't even add a page to one of those menu books you get at some chain restaurants. (e.g. "3000 Cal" = 8 characters include the space).

Snapshots from Norway: Kvikk Lunsj, More Than a Norwegian Kit Kat Bar

i love canadian kit kat but the best are the japanese ones. They have different versions of green tea kit kat because there are different kinds of green tea. And some are seasonal. That blew my mind. mmmm and the pudding one. so good.

Gourmet Dog Japon at Seattle's Pike Place Market

I have not seen it in japan but was told by a friend who is Japanese that she has seen it there (of course they could've copied Japadog lol). I'm guessing its not a hot dog stand but probably at some crepe place but it would be cooler if it was an original Vancouver invention.

Gourmet Dog Japon at Seattle's Pike Place Market

It's not unique....there is Japadog just 3 hours north in Vancouver which has been around for years. Japadog is not original either, they have these hot dog stands in Japan too.

I am looking forward to trying it next time I am shopping in Seattle. Hopefully it is as tasty as a Japadog.

Serious Caffeine Rush: What Is Instant Coffee?

I like instant coffee from Asia. They used to be really crappy but now they are a lot better. I prefer Korean brands but Nescafe from China is really good. There's not strong coffee culture in East Asia, probably due to tea but their instant stuff is enjoyable for what it is. Most Asian supermarkets carry these.

Just beware that there are a few laggard brands that are still bad. I don't even know their brands, just the packaging.

Served: Corporate Restaurantland

If corporate work and management is not your kind of thing, the best thing to do is exactly what you did: get out. I know lots of people who hate the generally stifling and bureaucratic nature of corporate world but get stuck in it because they just stayed a little longer and a little bit longer. Next thing you know, 5-10 years passed and you hate your job, your career. [definitely saw this when doing internships and realized I needed to be smarter than those people lol]

That said, I'm not sure what school you went to but pretty much every single person I knew in university (whether they studied history or literature or engineering or science or business) knew exactly what the words 'management trainee' meant: slave. Whether you are at a management consulting firm or a telecom company or an international beverage company, you work long hours, you go in on Saturdays, you get sent to India when no one else wants to go and you get last pick of holiday weeks. Oh and you are indeed competitive because where you get placed after training is based on how you fared compared to your coworkers. Still confused how you didn't know this as everyone I graduated with seems pretty clear and cynical about the whole thing... [there are great perks to being trainee but thats not the point of this post]

Pumpkin-Spice Latte Roundup: Whole Foods vs. Dunkin' Donuts vs. Starbucks

you guys realize most people who order these drinks (e.g. my coworkers, boyfriend, sister) are looking for something sweet with a bit of caffeine kick. They do not actually want coffee. My boyfriend likes extra extra caramel on his caramal macchiato. My sister actually said, I like starbucks but not coffee. LOL And she doesn't like clothes shopping so I'm convinced we're not related.

Myself, I always get every single seasonal drink once and only once. But they are all too sweet in its original form. Tips: get less pumps or pay for an extra shot of espresso. It's easier but more expensive to order an extra shot. I think the taste is better with less pumps rather than extra shot but its more complicated to say. Another alternative is to get a short which has less milk to dilute the espresso.

Old Holiday Chestnut: Awkward Family Photos' Infamous 'Thanksgiving Letter'

to be fair, if people are disappointed with thanksgiving, they probably blame the host, not the guests who actually ignored instructions or basic decency/common sense

I also support excel spreadsheets. they are so useful. If your thanksgiving is that complicated, you should create a tab for each person with a standard outline and their specific expectations highlighted and with individual notes below. yes, i am a 'little' ocd/type-a. However, I would never throw a dinner party let along thanksgiving dinner.

Momofuku Milk Bar Store (For Everyone)

I stopped caring about eating primarily locally when I realised I can't have bananas, oranges, avocados, mangos and wheat. These are just some examples of how eating locally doesn't always make sense. Also doesn't make sense to eat locally at all if you live in Toronto in the winter.

Also, you can't really make the corn cookies or blueberry cream cookies as they have some sort of powder/chemical used in them that make them so addicting (or gives that texture or something). I'm sure I can order that powder stuff online and make it myself but it'll come in a big bag and there's shipping on that too. I wantedto buy the cookies but no shipping to Canada. Too bad!

How Restaurants Deal With Angry Customers

My friend and I went to an expensive and very popular restaurant in Vancouver. I ordered a scallop ceviche but got a grilled scallop entree instead. He said that was what he repeated back (he repeated back 'scallops' and I said, yes I wanted scallops but in the ceviche. He apologized. I told the waiter I would eat the grilled scallop as that was my second choice and I did not want waste the food. Having worked in the hospitality industry, mistakes happen and if I can let it go, I will. A few moments later, he came back and told us that our dessert would be complimentary. We told him it's not necessary. I was satisfied with the grilled scallops. In the end, the dessert was free but we gave him a bigger than normal tip since he not only apologized but comped the dessert.
