Cook the Book: Chocolate Sheet Cake

I used this recipe for cupcakes last easter and they were delicious. SO moist. I can never get over melting and adding the eggs to the liquid but it works great!

Dim Sum Restaurants in Toronto or larger GTA?

Lai Wah Heen was recently featured here on Serious Eats. Never been but I've heard it is some of the best Dim Sum anywhere. Definitely pricy though.

Otherwise I like Tremendous in Mississauga but it is cart service.

'Top Chef Masters,' Episode 2: The 'Lost' Dinner

Just a request from a Canadian viewer not to put spoilers in the titles of these recaps - we don't get Top Chef Masters until the fall. This one was no problem to ignore but I've had TC spoiled before in my RSS feed.

Thanks :)

Tomato Sauce outta can? Gross!

Unico Hot & Spicy is my default canned sauce. On a weeknight I don't have the time to simmer home-made as long as I like. It also has 0.1g of fat compared to Hunts the other widely available canned brand (in Canada) that has 4g of fat.

Honestly, I don't see a world of difference between reading the labels on a can of prepared sauce and using one you like the taste of over opening cans of tomatoes and tomato paste and seasoning it yourself.

Visiting supermarkets when traveling - doesn't everyone?

I just got back from 2 weeks in Europe and one of my favourite experiences was visiting the Albert Heijn grocery store near my hotel in Amsterdam. I looked it up online before hand for directions and they have a crazy website!

I love seeing the price of produce, beer, snacks compared to home and love looking at the unusual snacks and treats, like Wokkels (curly potato crisps). Every snackfood comes in paprika flavour there, and you can get great beers for a tiny fraction of the cost in Canada (not to mention you can't buy beer at any grocery store in my province).

The Amsterdam store we went to is right near the Vondelpark and they must do a lot of picnic business because they had lots of small portions of cheese, meats and buns for under 1 euro. We got out of there with a huge picnic for 2 with beer for about 7 euros. Loved it!

Weird, you don't see this much chat about London, Ontario too often! That's where I'm from too.

No Beets Will Grow in the White House's Organic Vegetable Garden?

Doesn't the soil have to be pesticide free for several years to be certified orgainic? I'm curious about how they have orgainic soil at the white house (although I guess they can truck it in).

'Top Chef' Contestant Fabio Viviani Spokesman for New Frozen Pizza Line

I live in Canada too and these things are always on sale. They are much smaller than the big rising crust pizzas and quite tasty.

I wonder if they'll keep the Italian names like Spinaci, Funghi, Vegetale, Quattro Formaggi. Maybe Fabio will help with that!

Glad to see Fabio cashing in!

Dinner Tonight: Paprika Roast Chicken

Had this for dinner last night rubbed on chicken thighs (under the skin). I used 1/2 smoked paprika and 1/2 regular sweet. I was worried about the spiciness, but it wasn't hot at all. Delicious though, and lots of spice mix leftover. My husband loved it.

Alice Waters on Honest Family Food Values: Is It Up to All of Us?

I don't totally understand the logistics of school garden programs outside California. In areas where there is a limited growing season, children will be out of shool during the months with the most work and much of the harvest. It would be great if parents and students would volunteer to manage the garden over the summer, but it seems difficult to organize - if that many parents were interested in programs like this, children would learn about healthy food and gardening at home.
I think it is a great idea in theory, but I'd like to read about the cost and effort required to put it into practice in an area with harsh winters.

Cook the Book: 'The Modern Baker'

My biggest baking success was cheesecake. I had made one before that was delicious but cracked all over. I read all these techniques to avoid cracks, but they all sounded so complicated (I was afraid to put a springform pan in a water bath, even wrapped in foil). Then my best friends mom gave me a recipe for cheesecake with a sour cream topping. I covers all cracks and tastes amazing, so I'm no longer afraid to make cheesecake for company. It is so easy and gets rave reviews.

Serious Grape: How to Preserve a Glass of Sparkling Wine

I love the idea of a glass of sparkling wine every evening before dinner. It seems so decadent and is a great reward after a long day. I mentioned it to my husband and the next night he surprised me with a bottle of prosecco. This week it was cava, but the stopper popped off in the fridge the first night. Those are some powerful bubbles.

Dinner Tonight: Turkey Burgers

These burgers are so good, we have eaten them twice in the past week. Once with chevre on kaisers and once with old cheddar on ciabatta. I added chopped onion to the mix as well. Ground turkey is super cheap at my grocery store so I love this healthy, inexpensive dinner! 1/2 a pound of turkey makes 4 burgers. I even keep an extra burger back for the next day's lunch and it is still juicy after reheating in the microwave.
A tip I read about ground turkey is not to treat it like ground beef and mix lightly - you want to pack it as tightly as possible into patties.

Cook the Book: Chocolate Sheet Cake

I did it. It was AWESOME! A little more like an hour, but I'm slow. My wife, not really a fan of cake, loves it as well. Make sure you eat it when the icing is warm/room temp. I must admit, having a total of nearly a pound of butter and as much sugar as this recipe has certainly helps! ;)nom nom nom!

I haven't made this recipe, but I've used some of Pioneer Womans other recipes and I have always enjoyed them. Yes, sometimes too much butter or too much sugar, but that's the joy of dessert!

I made this over the weekend and it didn't come out very cakey. Wondering if high altitude would affect the outcome? The flavor was amazing, but the sugar content was rather extreme for this girl. I'm looking forward to adjusting this to suit my taste buds. Loved how quick and easy the recipe is.
