California Eatin': Dutch Crunch in the Bay Area

If you're willing to make your own bread, Peter Reinhart has a great recipe in the Bread Baker's Apprentice for Vienna Bread (which is a soft, sweet bread) that he suggests topping with Dutch Crunch. It's a winner.

I write Appoggiatura, http://haleysuzanne.wordpress.com . It's a collection of original recipes from my kitchen. I write up what I'm currently cooking so the recipes remain relevant and seasonal. And, I got a check+ in sharing in Kindergarten, so they're fair game. :)

You could also go "Green Eggs and Pham." I'm feeling the Dr. Seuss vibe this morning.

Served: Why Tipping Makes Everyone Uncomfortable

I absolutely agree that tipping well and graciously is a mandatory aspect of eating out. However, if my server ever had the audacity to approach me about what I left, I would never return to that restaurant. Honestly, I wish every restaurant added gratuity so that the debate could end. Kudos to the French.

The Mustards in My Fridge; Which Are in Yours?

Oh, and let's take it a bit further, too:
Mustard seeds - great for tasty rice and curries
Dry mustard for spice rubs

The Mustards in My Fridge; Which Are in Yours?

OK, my fridge is almost exactly the same, but I have few others:

Inglehoffer German mustard for bratwurst (love it, love it)
Whole grain mustard for vinaigrettes & other delights
Honey mustard for pretzel dipping - not the creamy stuff, the tangy good stuff.

Served: The Pleasure and Horror of Brunch

Brunch: not a fan, and it's possibly because I hate the word. It's cobbled together just like the menus. I kind of hate the brunch experience. If I wanted breakfast, I would get up for it. Instead, everywhere alters their menus to add some shitty hollendaise sauce and eggs and mimosas. In Athens, it's an excuse to get hammered early and then drink margaritas at a taco joint for the rest of the day and evening.

I'd say brunch probably is a better experience in NY, and I'd like to give it a shot in another town. Might be an improvement. But a line of hipsters waiting for a sudden death throw down with eggs on the side doesn't exactly attract me.

My McDonald's Shamrock Shake Journey: An Emotional Roller Coaster

I adore the Shamrock Shake. Where I currently live, I can't get one, but growing up in Savannah, GA I developed a strong addiction for them. I am currently working on a home recipe for the delights....I just have to finish tweaking the alcohol content......
