Trader Joe's Frozen Avocado Halves = Fail

I agree with this post -- I bought some recently because I'm the only one in the house who likes avocados. Thawed a couple of the halves last night to add to salad. They had the absolute wrong texture and tasted disgusting. Rest of the bag went into the trash.

Cook the Book: 'How to Cook Everything, Revised Tenth Anniversary Edition'

My first instinct was brownies, so I'll stick with that. But I've made dozens of his recipes over the years and they all have been worth repeating.

I do wish they'd issue a spiral-bound copy (or even a hefty paperback) -- my hardbound copy cracked a week in and many years later, the pages are falling out in chunks. It's battle-weary, which I guess is good for a cookbook.

Five Guys' Fries Make Me Weep with Happiness, Burger Is Not Bad

I totally agree about the fries. I've given up fries except for five guys... I got tired of being disappointed with regular fast-food fries.

The Rocky Mountain Diner is delicious and has a good variety of food for a crowd. It's more upscale than a traditional diner. Buffalo meatloaf - YUM.

I second the calls for Illegal Pete's, too.

From Recipes

Marvelous Mint Ice Cream

also try the Fresh Mint Ice Cream from David Lebovitz's book. It's sublime. Really, any of his recipes are winners. I'm particularly fond of the roasted banana and Guinness-milk chocolate.

Movie Theater Food

usually sneak in some M&Ms or twizzlers, but we do buy a soda once there (husband prefers fountain drinks to cans/bottles).

The most brazen food-sneaking I ever experienced wasn't me, but in a tiny, now-defunct arthouse theater in Dupont Circle. The guy behind me brought in takeout curry -- there was no hiding the smell. But, there were only a dozen or so people in the theater, and no one complained. (And I felt less guilty for having a sandwich with me that time.)

Help me with my weekday dinners

I make a batch of crepes about once a week (makes 12-15 and they keep well in the fridge), and we eat them with rejiggered leftovers. For instance, sunday's leftover easter ham got diced up and sauteed with asparagus, mushrooms, gruyere and herbes de provence. Or if we have leftover chicken, I might sautee that with some spinach and swiss. Plus, there's something novel about them, even though we have them regularly, because the filling is always different (and a great way to use up leftover veggies too).

Starbucks Discontinues Breakfast Sandwiches

I liked the sandwiches. It was nice to have a food option that wasn't 100% carbs and sugar - a little protein and even a few spinach leaves were nice. (And yes, they seemed to be very popular at the NW DC branch I frequented).

What Would You Make To Help a Family Through a Tough Time?

Red beans and rice are another option. Freezes decently, and you can add andouille sausage as well.

Kumquats!

I love them on skewers with meats and vegetables, slow-roasted in the oven.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

A Hole in One!!!! My grandfather used to make these for me when I was a very little girl, visiting him in Lancaster, PA. He was not a golfer. He was first-generation American of Swedish descent, who had grown up in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Five Guys' Fries Make Me Weep with Happiness, Burger Is Not Bad

The fries are wayyyy overrated! They must not cook them twice, or rinse them or soak them or neither. The fries are too starchy (and barely crisp) an end result. The burgers are very good though; bun has good density.

Some great names here - I love Egyptian Eyes especially! But wow: over 200 comments, and apparently no one else calls them "top hats". (And yes, I always thought my mother invented them, too. :) )

My hubby made these for me for me all the time when we were in college - we call them Eggs in a Basket.

@Ed Levine - My mom called them "Egyptian eggs" as well. I think me, you and Embackus's friend were the only one. It seems to be the least known name for them.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Everyone knows it's called a "bunny egg". My grandmother invented it.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Growing up Dad called it a Bulls Eye (from Rhode Island). We always loved when Dad had to make breakfast! He cut the hole with a shot glass so the hole was just big enough for the yolk part and the rest of the egg ran over the bread so you had to flip it and cook that side too! Just don't over cook it and it won't be dry. The hardest part was buttering both sides of the bread. I get around that now by using a brush and softened butter.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

My mom always called this "egg in a hat" - I guess when you put the cut-out circle back on top of the hole in the toast, without pushing it all the way in, it looks a little like a hat...

Never saw them till I married my ex when he used to fix them for our kids. He called them Toad in the Hole.

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

Cut two holes in the bread and drop in two eggs and call it " here's looking at you" You could even put at the bottom a piece of bacon for the mouth- curve it upwards at the ends to make it smile.
That's presentation! Dave

Eggs in a Frame...came from a Betty Crocker cookbook I had when I was a little girl, a long, long time ago!!! That and "Cheese Dreams", which was english muffins, slice of tomato, bacon, and (ugh) velveeta cheese under a broiler...my 2 favorite meals!!!

gueralinda....sorry, Toad in the Hole is a banger/sausage in Yorkshire pudding batter. I'm English, live in England and eat Toad in the Hole at least twice per month. Bubble & Squeak is another favorite of mine....but that's off topic.

Cheers!

Toad in the Hole. Toad in the Hole. Toad in the Hole. Anything else is just wrong! Actually, in the interest of sociology, we should all be putting the source of our name here as well, for example, my Dad called them toad in the hole. He grew up in the tri-cities, WA, and is of scotch-english background.

From Serious Eats

Egg in Toast: What Do You Call It?

My Mom always called this (my favorite breakfast EVER!) eggy-in-a-hole, but for some reason by the time I was in college I picked up the name "Gaslight Special" from a roommate.

Weird.
