"I LOVE ANGEL HAIR, BUT HATE SPAGHETTI!!!" ..... WTF?!

i get legitimately excited if spiral shaped pasta (rotini) is available. i prefer it over all of the other kinds, and angel hair is my second favorite.

with that being said, i hate raw tomatoes (unless they're on sandwiches), but ketchup and tomato sauce are 2 of my favorite things. guess i like the processed stuff. :)

Ketchup on Hash Browns: Way or No Way?

yes, definitely! and basically at a 1:3 potato to ketchup ratio. but i also put it on the most ridiculous of items, like turkey sandwiches. :)

Dates for Fine Food

no way. here's why:
1. i won't do more than drinks for the first date. a two-hour meal is waaay too long to spend with someone you don't like/don't know if you like.
2. it's awkward - there's A LOT of ground to cover on a first date and taking a big bite and then being asked a question is just embarassing for everyone.
3. karma is a bitch.

Ed Levine's Serious Diet, Week 59: How Much Should I Weigh?

i think your BMI matters, but overall, it's your body fat percentage that is most important. you know those people who are super-tiny, eat whatever they want, and never exercise? i hate them. :) i also call them "skinny fat". they can have a host of problems (high blood pressure, high cholesterol, etc.) and don't have an ounce of muscle on them, but they are perceived as "healthy" because they aren't overweight. so not the case.

keep doing what you're doing, ed - we're all so proud of you. you're establishing a diet and exercise program that will work for you long-term. as long as you keep reminding yourself that being healthy is a lifestyle, not a goal, you'll be fine. as joy said, your body will let you know where you belong.

Good food in Western Mass?

i'm so relieved - i thought you might be horrified by my teo's suggestion! :)

hot harry's (burritos) is another super-casual place and there are several locations (i know there's one on north street). i've never eaten there but my best guy friend RAVES about it, as does my mother.

let me know what you think about teo's!

Good food in Western Mass?

i'm from pittsfield (lived there for 18 years) and have a hard time recommending anything because most of the places i grew up with have given way to *shudder* chains. my parents have been to trattoria rustica and loved it.

however, teo's hot dogs on east street is an institution. go when you're in the mood for baby hot dogs with the works! it's definitely not "serious eats" (the place is a total dive), but i go every single time i'm home.

"Sticky" subject ... giving "bites" ... how to handle?

i'm totally with you, Karen. I HATE when people want bites of my food, unless (as others have stated), sharing or splitting is discussed beforehand. I ordered what I ordered because I want it.

I also can't BELIEVE your mother-in-law! I'd flip!

I've never tasted ___, but I would like to try it.

i am deathly allergic to fish, which was discovered when i was a baby. i desperately want to try salmon and tuna. but alas, i was recently re-tested and the allergy lives on. :(

Pantry 'Ghosts': Do You Have Them?

omg this thread is hilarious! i thought i was the only one! i have a can of kidney beans, a can of chickpeas (left over from my "i'm going vegan!!!" stage), a gift box (if you can call it that) of jack daniel's meat marinades, and 2 cans of jellied cranberry sauce. oh and also a half-full box of sweet-n-low packets (thanks, mommy). all are at least 3 years out-of-date and have been moved twice.

Large-Scale Enticing Food Smells

Yes, Lilly Tao, the Necco factory! I work in Cambridge and I think they still make Tootsie Rolls there - you can smell chocolate most days.

A little bit South of Boston, near Dorchester, there is/was some sort of spice factory (I can't find it on Google). Grossest smell in the world when you're sitting in non-moving traffic on a work day and had a few too many the night before. :)

Cook the Book: 'Simple Italian Snacks'

i make a healthier version of the basic spinach and artichoke dip with low-fat mayonnaise, part-skim mozzarella, and a little parmesan. lots of garlic to add flavor...people CLAIM they can't tell it's low-fat (I CAN)! :)

These are old lists, but all of the restaurants are still in business and most are in pretty touristy areas. I highly recommend Grille 23. Hope this helps!

Foods that make you go hurl

Pasta Bolognese. I know, devastating. But my father made it as a special dinner when I was a kid. I was recovering from the flu and STARVING since I had been too ill to eat for nearly a week. I was so excited! I ate a huge plate of it and...it's been almost 20 years since that incident and I still can't bring myself to take a bite.

And I'm with you, Pavlov...except for me it's Southern Comfort.

Unique Edible Gifts

i make white chocolate gorp from allrecipes.com for everyone in my office (http://allrecipes.com/Recipe/White-Chocolate-Gorp/Detail.aspx). it's DELICIOUS (and addictive!), fast, cheap, easy, makes a TON, and is easily packaged in decorative bags!
