I'm staying in Vancouver Saturday night and have never been to the city. I live in NYC, so I feel like I have access to a lot of good restaurants, but I'd love something that's unique to Vancouver, a local favorite. Simple-but-good or not-fancy-but-delicious are both great traits.
I live and work in SOMA in San Francisco, and the best (or at least most consistent) thin-slice pizza I've seen is Uncle Vito's. Surely there's a respite from Goat Hill and Amici's around here!

Andy Rooney fans represent! I was really afraid he was gonna go negative on mangoes and I was going to have to choose between two beloved mainstays of my childhood, but it turned out alright.
Holy crap Wilber's was good. It's almost impossible to express why it's so good, but just *seeing* the pictures made me happy and hungry.

Congrats, Serious Eats team! This looks like the best version yet of the best food site on the web, and one of my favorite communities of any kind. Can't wait to see what you all cook up next -- I've already got "eating out" bookmarked. :)
It's not really a *recipe*, per se, but I documented my first attempt at oxtails and I was quite happy with how it turned out.
Having an ax to grind doesn't seem that persuasive, even to those who are sympathetic to the points you're making. Dragging in politics that are going to be even more polarizing makes it seem more like you're trying to harangue people, not warn them about what you see as a health issue.
Your post seems wildly out of sync with the tone and content of the rest of the contributions on the site -- maybe there's a more constructive/productive way to discuss these topics that you're obviously so passionate about?

The thing I love about this site is that it's not Pretentious Eats, it's Serious Eats. I love food, and eating, but I'm not educated on the topic and love feeling like I'm not being dismissed just because I come at this from the perspective of an enthusiast, instead of being an expert. I find all of the healthiest, most vibrant communities on the web are those that respectfully welcome new members, and I've appreciated that even my presence here as a lurker is accepted.
The only thing I'd change is that there be more content on the site. :)

As someone who grew up just south of the border, I will confirm that Fairmont bagels are, in fact, incredibly good.
No one's commented it yet, so I might as well: I for one, welcome our new bagel overlords.
I hope he didn't forget the green cheese. I mean the cream cheese.
@Luna: Fairway is almost always open. They might be closed Christmas day, but that's about it. (Oh, and on 9/11/01, they closed at 8pm or so, so staff could get home to loved ones. It was very strange to walk by and see the place shuttered.) And I doubt that they'd close down the place merely for Mr. Rooney. They must've done it very very early in the morning.
Rooney's schtick was cute for about two years, back in the 70's.
Since then it's just been bloviation.
@BrianPrestonCampbell, like the rest of us you'll probably only be a "mellow, open-minded, cool old" person if you can remember to take your meds every morning. :-D

I really wanted him to walk around the corner and meet head-on with some real fruit. You know, those guys from "Queer Eye". ;-)
What I want to know is when did they film that? 3 o'clock in the morning? Where are the people? Where's the little old lady nudging you with her cart? Where's the impatient woman, just back from her run (that'd be me), barrelling through the aisles? Where's the mother with the double stroller clogging the aisle? Where are the people in my beloved Fairway?
Most grapes aren't grown from seed. The "next generation of grapes" are usually clones of the previous generation, grown by grafting or planting cut vines from other plants.
