Alice Waters on Honest Family Food Values: Is It Up to All of Us?

"pjacob01" - I think it's dangerous to suggest a "must pack lunch" program for families with greater incomes because it only sets the "poor" students apart.

My high school had two cafeteria lines: one for the normal daily meal and one for "a la carte" items, like apples or granola bars. Perhaps schools could cut down their food costs and enable more student choice by going to an all "a la carte" system - healthy (or at least healthier) wraps and sandwiches, fruit, veggies, etc. Kids will only eat what they want anyway, so this could cut down on the cost of a child's lunch at the same time as eliminating waste for the food no one wants.

Eating in Columbus, Ohio

I lived in Columbus for 5 years - Here's the lowdown:

1. Ice Cream - Go to Graeters. There are several locations about town and you won't be dissapointed. (Try anything with "chips" - giant pieces of high quality chocolate)
2. Pizza - Very fond of Flying Pizza on High Street, across from the OSU campus.
3. Chinese - Joy's Village, also on High Street. It's underground - under an apartment building, and it's pure gold.
4. Coffee - Stauf's in Grandview (5 minutes north of the city) is worth several trips. They are open until midnight most nights, and it's a great experience.
5. General - I like Cafe Neopolitana and Broad Street Bagels and Deli downtown (high and broad) for casual lunch places. The Short North has a variety of good small places, and the brewery district is always a hit.

Mostly, though - I recommend Hoggy's! Sounds bizarre, but they have three locations, and it's great bbq and homestyle dining.

If you're a book fan, you should pop into the Book Loft in the German Village.

I think every college kid in America would go to Nacho Town (at least after midnight). So, there's a franchise opportunity, emes1!

Best sushi in Chicago

If you're in the burbs, Sushi Kushi Toyo in Vernon Hills is the best. It's a fairly small place, but the quality cannot be beat!

Dinner Tonight: Orzo 'Risotto'

I just made orzo with peas and parmesan -

Instead of boiling the orzo in water, I boil it in chicken stock, for the time allotted on the package. At 4 minutes left in cooking time, I stir in 1/3 bag of frozen peas. When the orzo is done cooking, remove from heat and stir in desired amount of parmesan. Finished dish is creamy, wonderfully starchy, and the peas add a kick of green.

Yum!

Post your profession...

A 23 year old Development Associate at a major hospital in Chicago. Grew up with my mom baking up a storm year round, so I took to it pretty quickly. I love to cook, but prefer making sweets. I am amassing a huge selection of cookbooks - my guilty reading pleasure!

What's Your Favorite Local Ice Cream?

Handel's Ice Cream in Ohio - I have not found a better ice cream - particularly their Butter Pecan. My fiance loves their Chocoholic Chunk.

(I will also throw a little weight behing the Graeter's nomination, though)

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's your favorite potato dish?

Definitely a tie between Garlic Red Skinned Mashed Potatoes and Sweet Potato fries. Yum!

Anybody have a good recipe for potatoes au gratin, though?

From Talk

Question of the Day: What's your burger style?

We make sliders at home - Mix a pound of ground round with a pound of ground sirloin, chop fresh garlic, a pinch of salt and pepper. Serve on fresh bakery rolls - my fiance piles on pickles, but I just use ketchup and mustard. Make this if you have guests, otherwise you'll be eating burgers for a week!

From Talk

Do you eat weekday breakfast? If so, what?

A slice of peanutbutter toast (whole grain bread) and whatever fruit is around the house.

Question of the Day: What cuisine can't you stand?

I have a tendency to dislike German food. The exception is their desserts!!! Just not a fan of all that sausage and potatoes and creamy stuff.

Most healthful AND pleasurable? ...Hands down, a suchi cucumber roll - a piece of cucumber wrapped in sushi rice and seaweed. It tastes "Green" and fresh - by far my favorite food (besides broccoli, of course).

There also used to be a really good Chinese restaurant in the Lane Avenue Shopping Center, don't know if it's still there. Steamed spicy wontons, oh my...

C'mon guys...

Nobody mentions Handke's? or Rosendales? Columbus has a vast array of great Chefs and great restaurants. North Market is great for lunch, everytime I go I do not leave withour a bubble tea! Omega breads has some killer breads, and of course you can't go wrong with Jeni's.

The Whole Foods Market off Dublin & Sawmill is one of the largest in the nation, the cheese stand alone is awe inspiring.

As far as restaurants go, it depends on what you are looking for and how much you are willing to spend. Hankde's is a must stop. You can't go wrong at a restaurant ran by a certified Master Chef who competed at the Bosuce D'Or!

From Talk

I agree with Anastasia7173, if you like BBQ, Hoggy's is very good eats! I'm also a Graeter's ice cream fan, but heard Jeni's is a must. (I live 2 hours North and haven't been there yet.)

Go to Japanese Oriental Restaurant on high street, just north of osu for great korean food and sushi.

I agree with all the comments about north market, that ice cream place is delicious. Graeters is really good too, more of a cincinnati thing but you can't go wrong. If you want wilder flavors go to the place at north market, but it closes early.

Definitely peanut butter. I, too, have eaten at Peanut Butter & Co. in New York (and LOVED it), but I'd love to have a more upscale restaurant and definitely an even larger menu than they currently do. Peanut butter can be used in so many ways - from sweet to savory, appetizers to dessert, Latin American to Thai flavors, and just about everything in between.....

Oh my gosh - a garlic restaurant! Brilliant!

eatorama - ever heard of "Cheeburger Cheeburger"? They do something like that, with all the crazy toppings & whatnot. Give 'em a google search sometime, check out the website. We got one in LR about a year ago (or so), but... honestly... when I went there it was all hype and not a lot of delivery.

@johnfred--you made me think about a sauce I haven't made in a long time--vanilla bean burre blanc. The vanilla bean is opened and added into the cream and vinegar when they are reduced. Then you remove the bean and proceed as usual.

..... Parmesan Cheese! The real deal --- all dishes made with Parmesan -- could get very creative!, but nothing too strange- no chocolate/parmesan desserts, etc. Other than that, it would be heaven!

P.S. Re the garlic themed restaruant -- in Madison, NJ there is a restaurant called Garlic Rose -- all garlic, all the time, every dish -- I can't go near the place and if you are with someone who does, you can't go near them for a couple of days.

Where's the grilled cheese in Ohio??? I wanna go...

Went to S'Mac in Manchester, CT last fall...not incredible, but not bad. Was fun for our kids.

I used to love the chain Noodles & Co. when I worked in suburban Detroit...they had every kind of noodle dish, from pad Thai to mushroom stroganoff, to noodle salads. They also had fresh-baked flatbread served with large pats of butter that was almost yummier than the noodles.

My personal choice, though...mushrooms. Mushroom risotto, mushroom soup, and I imagine you could do all kinds of dishes using portobellos to replace meat...stir-fries, sandwiches, etc. Not sure what you'd do for dessert though...maybe those mushroom-shaped chocolate truffles??

sushi wabi on Randolph is delicious-has traditional and some excellent "different" types of sushi-it is small so you may have to wait.

I would love a place devoted to vanilla. I am a sucker for all things custardy and rich. Puddings, cakes, cookies, pastries. Some complimentary flavors as well - cherries, almond, coconut. That way maybe I could find a biscuit tortoni equal to the one I had in Venice the summer I turned 20.

But no chocolate, not even the white stuff.

Lobster. Mmmm, I could even eat it for breakfast!

"Garlique's", everything with garlic. Appetizers, soups and main dishes... I'll just bet some creative minds out there would have some dessert ideas too! Maybe baked apples/pears with a melted garlic cheese...

Lemons is a good one too!

Hamburgers only. But, you can get anything you can think of to put on it- peanut butter, coleslaw, chili, guacamole, french fries, beans, eggs, lots of different kinds of cheese etc. etc.

OK, I actually went to bed thinking about this last night (sad, I know). I would open a grilled cheese restaurant. Just think of the possibilities. You could have the sample Mild Cheddar or Colby on White bread, but you could also do much more whimsical and creative sandwiches as well. For the vegans you could have Grilled Soycheese. If any of you start this, please cite me in the liner notes of your menu.

cheese. i'd have cheese plates with all kinds of interesting accompaniments alongside them.

what would really be fun would be a british themed tea shop that served great little finger sandwiches and cakes and things, with lots of books and a fireplace and acoustic music on the weekends.

Only Small sandwiches on dinner size rolls including sliders, ham and cheese, tuna, chicken salad etc. etc. etc.

You could even have an all you can eat small sandwich buffet.

This would also lead to a large catering and party-size to go side business.

Some college kids in Miami opened The Cereal Bowl across from UM. You can actually add things like Snow Caps and Marshmallow Fluff to Frosted Flakes. I'm slipping into a diabetic coma just thinking about it...

But I agree with PerkyMac - Lemons. Yum!

How about a restaurant with just pizza! (oh wait, that's been done).

How about a restaurant that features butter in every recipe--you could call it "Lady & Sons"

I'm sure there are plenty of restaurants that do this already but I'd open one that served everything on a stick...cuz almost everything tastes better on a stick.

When I was younger, my friend and I wanted to open a restaurant that only served food that was served flambe.
