Sujebi and Seafood Pancakes at Arirang in Koreatown

Referenced this post all week when I needed a great place to go for my bday night this past Saturday. None of us had never been there but I trust the serious eaters here so I dragged my crew here. We ordered the chicken kaljabi, Korean meatballs, seafood kaljabi( or sujabi, can't remember) ginseng chicken soup and dimpling soup, we even added some beers and soju to the mix. Everything was fantastic! I dont eat pork but I had to try the dumplings anyway. They were spicy , but not in a hot way. Great taste of Ginger and an ample size. All of the meals were perfect for a chilly night in the city.

I do have to say, the Korean meatballs were the biggest hit. Go figure.

Great place to eat in koreatown on the cheap?

We are definitely not teetotaling, lol, so that is the reason behind the 20 dollar FOOD cap; the drinks will be another expense for us. Thank you all for the suggestions!

Roadtrip Maine to South Carolina- where to stop for food

OK, I'll rep for NJ! If you want to experience a cool diner in NJ, stop off at Americana Diner in East Windsor. It's easy to get to from the NJ Turnpike a.k.a. I-95. Here is the website: http://www.americanadiner.com/index.html

Please, please take some fresh baked bread with you! Their breads and pastries are awesome...

Strangest dish you've made?

I have 2....peachy chicken and applesauce chicken. The latter one was made when Hubby and I were still dating and he and his roomate only had chicken breasts, onions and applesauce in their kitchen. It came out heavenly and Hubby still asks for it 10 years later.

The peachy chicken came about when I was over run during peach season and remembered how good the applesauce paired with the chicken. I thought "why the hell not?" I threw some stuff together and bingo! A good recipe. Here are the 2 recipes:

What is the longest you have waited to eat in a restaurant?

An hour and half to eat at Carrabba's of all places. We were taking our grandmother out for her 75th birthday and we waited....in the rain...for Carrabba's. What were we thinking?

Of course cablevision doesn't have it....but given their big battle with Food Network a few months ago, I should have figured so.

In Season: Strawberries

We LOVE strawberries every year! I do make sure to freeze some when they are in season to use during the winter when we have a deep craving. I also use them in this great cake recipe that my son is now falling in love with, and it uses up our rice krispie stockpile. Yup, rice krispies baked right in the cake. Yum! Here's the link if anyone is interested:

In Season: Mangoes

It seems like every time an "in season" comes out, I never see them at the stores, or at least not at a good price. Like when supposedly lemons were in season, I waited to finally see them back at a good price(we love homemade lemon curd) but to no avail. Don't want to be disappointed with mango too :o(

Gourmet slow cooker recipes

I have a few of our favorite recipes adapted into crockpot versions on my blog. You can find them here: http://4hatsandfrugal.blogspot.com/search/label/crockpot%20recipe

It includes our favorite recipe for cinnamon apples, caramelized onions in the crockpot, and a wonderful recipe I call peachy chicken.

To get past the whole "over cooking" in the crock pot, you can always use one of those timers that everyone uses during the holidays to automatically have their Christmas lights turn on and off. When I would work 16 hour days, I used this and set it to "turn on" the crock pot about 7 or 8 hours before I was due home. I did try to put frozen or very cold ingredients in the crock pot before I left home since it would be sitting out for a bit before it was due to start cooking.

Anyone have an Easy but Yummy BREAD MAKER recipe?

We only eat wheat bread here, so here is the recipe we use for that:

1 cup warm water (110-115 degrees F.)
1 tablespoon milk
2 tablespoons oil
4 tablespoons brown sugar
1 teaspoon salt
2 cup whole-wheat flour (we grind our own, see note below)
1 cups all-purpose flour
2 teaspoons dry yeast (get this in bulk from Sam’s or Costco)

Put all ingredients in the bread machine in the order listed.
Set on dough cycle.
When dough cycle is finished, take dough out and shape into a
loaf in a greased bread pan.
Cover and let rise in a warm place for 20-45 minutes (until doubled). Bake at 350 degrees F. for 30 minutes or until golden brown.

You can actually bake it right in the machine, but it makes a denser bread.

We also use this recipe for Brioche bread which is so easy and so good: http://www.recipezaar.com/Brioche-Loaf-Breadmaker-1-12-Lb-Loaf-94536

What do YOU think the sexiest foods are? Why

Nice ripe strawberries of course. A real woman knows how to eat them just right and cause a commotion in public.

I also have a "thang" for scallops: seared wonderfully on each side but soft, supple and sweet in the middle. *sigh* this is how babies are made, my friends. It's always the food's fault....

Seriously Italian: Snow Day Crespelle

We made these about a month ago and they were a BIG success. I put some vanilla yogurt in the middle and topped with some powdered sugar. So simple and so yummy! I want to make them again this coming weekend and use up some ricotta we have. I'll sweeten it with some powdered sugar and put some lemon zest in it. Should be pretty good...

Canned Crab Meat? Cheaper seafood options for cooking at home.

I've had a big craving for seafood lately as well(I'm 4 months pregnant and NEED my cravings) so I have been on the lookout for good but inexpensive seafood items.

One that I ran across was frozen calamari. It was between 1.79 and 1.99 a pound every time I checked the price at the grocery store. It defrosts quickly and besides frying it(boring!) you can do so many things with it. I referenced an old Good Eats episode for some great ideas and found a few recipes in my Mom's old Italian cookbooks. Lots of meals for a small price.

Foodie gifts gone right/wrong. What did you get for the holidays?

I got 2 Nigella Lawson cookbooks, a brand spanking new deep fryer(thanks Santa!) and the biggest surprise, Cook or be Cooked for Wii. I asked for the other things, but this was a wonderful surprise. I can't wait to see how much fun the game is. Oh! I also got a customized mix of loose tea and a tea maker from my Mother In Law. It was a good foodie Christmas.

Weekend Cook and Tell: Your Favorite Cookbooks of 2009

Jumping on the pioneer woman bandwagon. I have been waiting for that cookbook for 6 months, and I was not disappointed. It gave us the essence of her quirkiness and sense of humor, while breaking down new recipes the same way she does with the recipes on her site.

Cook the Book: 'Good Eats: The Early Years'

Oh boy! Well, my favorite food related thanksgiving story seems funny now but was quite interesting while it was happening.

It was the second year I was invited to my fiancee's(now husband) family's thanksgiving celebration. He had just moved to states to be with me and we were going back to his home state for a grand meal. Little did we know, his aunt had decided to take a trip to New York for the holiday and leave us all in the lurch. She's the main cook and without her, there wouldn't be any thanksgiving.

We scrambled to find a buffet that would do thanksgiving food, and his family thought it was horrible in comparison. I, on the other hand, gobbled down that dry turkey and canned cranberry like nobody's business.

The reason I thought it was the best meal on earth, we found out a few weeks later, is because I was pregnant. Now when I think back on that disgusting food, I laugh at how fickle a pregnant palate can be.

Cook the Book: 'The Pioneer Woman Cooks'

For the past two years, Pioneer Woman Cooks has been my go-to, culinary mecca when I need inspiration and a chuckle. Ree is phenominal and I love whole whole site just as much as I love the cooking section. She is the foul temptress that fills my house with apple dumplings and pan-seared steaks. And I thank her for it.

Serious eats is my second favorite :o)
