Cook the Book: 'Baking Unplugged'

Hmm...I've had a couple. But probably the funniest/worst was adding 2 tbsp of baking SODA instead of baking powder (I think that's what it was at least)....to cookies. SO gross!!!

In Love with Hershey's Candy Cane Kisses

I love the candy cane Kisses!! :) :) We also got the hot chocolate Kisses..but they don't really taste different from just regular milk chocolate kisses. Don't care for them at all.

What's Your Favorite Halloween Candy?

@deliah We used to organize everything too :)

Um I'll pretty much eat anything sweet (that's what she said...)

but seriously, i could a ton of kit kats...any other chocolate candy (like twix or reeses) is too sweet to eat a ton of!

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

Soda. My boyfriend calls it pop (he is from Michigan) and I tell him now that he lives here in california he can't use that word :) He doesn't listen.

Fresh Artichokes

Well instead of dipping in butter you could find something, or make something, that is better for you.

I just randomly searched and http://www.artichokes.org/ has a few good ideas on different neat ways to prepare them under the Recipe section.

Who's going to win Top Chef?

I'm not sure yet! Usually when about half the people are gone I can tell more. I can usually pick who they are going to kick though. I did like the girl who won the challenge. I'm glad it's back on too :)

From Talk

Soft sugar cookies?

I've made this recipe twice...they are really, really good. Very soft and light.

2 1/4 cup all purpose white flour
1 ½ teaspoon baking powder
¼ teaspoon salt
¾ cup butter (real unsalted)
4 ounces cream cheese
1 cup sugar
1 egg
1 teaspoon vanilla

-Cream the butter and cream cheese, then add the sugar, egg, and vanilla. Then add the rest of the ingredients.
-Refrigerate for two hours
-I basically make these as drop cookies but I'll form them to about 1/4 inch thick round cookies...so they cook pretty ;)
-Bake at 350 degrees for about 13 minutes

Going to pick strawberries... now what?

Make some strawberry lemonade too :) Yummers.

From Talk

What kind of kick are you on?

For a while it was a big cup of hot chocolate in the evening with whipped cream. I just got a wisdom tooth pulled and my latest love is mashed sweet potatoes.

From Talk

What's your favorite warm weather beverage?

Well...we don't have warm weather...we have hot as heck weather. Anything frozen...iced coffees...water mostly.

From Talk

You'll never see ____ on my grocery list

Ew Crisco! Blech! Mine would never have: green beans. So, I would say I wouldn't personally buy a lot of that "fake" stuff mentioned above, but my other half loves most of that :O Remember that bagel w/cream cheese post the other day? Yeah, he couldn't wait to buy them. YUCK.

From Talk

Who partakes in a little fast food action?

I love Chipolte (I get the salad), I don't really consider it fast food..i guess it is though :(

From Talk

Are you more picky about certain categories of foods?

I would say that I am kind of like you when it comes to desserts. There are just desserts that I am not fond of at all. Like you said, why pack in those extra calories if it's not something that tastes yummy! I don't care for pies at all, usually don't care for cake (cupcakes i love if they have good frosting!), only like one kind of donut. Wow, I'm picky. But really if you have a plate of cookies, brownies, cheesecake, anything chocolate..I'm doomed! I also constantly bake...so the gym is my friend :P

The only other thing I can think of is I am very picky about sauces on my Italian food! I really don't care for red sauce at all..I KNOW. So usually don't eat spaghetti w/it, or lasagna, and would definitely never order anything w/it if we're out to dinner.

From Talk

Who partakes in a little fast food action?

Lemons, well since they only have burgers, fries and shakes... :) You can build your burger as high as you want though (can you say 10x10?). And don't forget to order your burger and/or fries "animal style" (they add pickle, extra spread and grilled onions + cheese on the fries). Mmm.

From Talk

What flavor is your cheesecake?

Friends episode with the cheesecake, anyone? I love every kind of cheesecake. The best I've had is at a local Italian place - a vanilla bean cheesecake, holy yum!!! The best I've made was pumpkin, caramel apple, and a few of my own little creations.

From Talk

I'd rather not eat soggy _____

I'm with you Kerosena :) I love my 'squishy' fries, non-crunchy cereal, sopping up soup, etc., with my bread. Mmm.

I love the sog!

From Talk

What do you drink when you're at home?

Lots of water, sometimes milk, wine and *sweetened* tea.

Cook the Book: Chocolate Sablés

That's a tough question. The first thing that comes to mind are these cheesecake bars I made during x-mastime. Chocolate wafer/coffee crust, chocolate cheesecake filling, topped with a thin layer of a dark chocolate mixture. So good.

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

It's pop. Done. Unless it's a brand name.

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

Growing up in northern NY (not up state) it was soft drinks. Here in central NY ('cuse) it's soda.

I lived in southern california my whole life and always referred to it as soda but after moving to Ohio ant age 23 I am getting sucked into calling it pop...

Soda. The stuff I don't drink.

Coke is only for Coca Cola and Cocaine.

i come from berkeley, where we called coca cola "the black waters of imperialism."

pop. and im curious... i live in the pittsburgh area, where we say pop, and pepsi has billboards every where just saying "pop". Where those of yousay soda, do they have "soda" billboards? every time i see one i wonder...

From Talk

Soda, cola, pop, coke, etc.?

I live in california. Have lived here nearly all my life, and have always refered to it as coke no matter what I am drinking. I live in Riverside, CA but have also lived in San Diego, CA growing up and we called it the same in both places. Not sure who calls it soda sounds strange. But my cousins come down from Virginia and they call it Pop. Thought they were talking about those little pop rock candies the first time they asked for a pop. lol.

Let's talk Valentine's Day candy...

@Owlfriend ~ I believe you are a shill.

For anyone looking for the hot candy hearts - CVS and probably every other place that sells candy. I just got a bag and they are good!

Let's talk Valentine's Day candy...

I just joined here because I found your post. I know it is over a year old, but I found a place online (finally!) that carries those Cinnamon Candy Hearts that are NOT hard gummys types like jujubes! I used to be able to get them around Valentine's Day from a local candy company, but they specialized in chocolates only now, so they stopped making them. The place I found them online is http://www.vermontcountrystore.com .

They are expensive, but I love these so much I bought several containers of them as they could stop making them at any time (yes I'm addicted).

I've found other older rare "old fashioned" candies there too (as well as all kinds of hard to find red licorice which my husband loves), but this is one I was particularly excited about. put in this in the search box at the store "Cinnamon Hearts". It is in the Candy Store Counter, Old Fashioned Candy section of the web site.

No, I do not work for Vermont Country Store, I was pointed that way by my Mom for some stuff I loved when I grew up in the 1960's and 1970's and they have found some of it and their customer service is GREAT!

If you know another non-local candy place I could get these (I could get online or they have a chain store I might be able to track down) I would LOVE to know! Thanks!

My grandmother made the best classic country apple pie. Her recipe is a family institution, and no one can imagine Thanksgiving without it. A few years ago, I was in charge of bringing the apple pie. Being so wrapped up in holiday preparations, I thought I was following the recipe to a T. Turns out I not only FORGOT the sugar, but I also put in way too much cinnamon. The pie looked fine when we sliced it, but after everyone took their (huge) first bites, it became pure disaster. Have you ever seen anyone try to eat a spoonful of cinnamon? It's awful! My entire family was suddenly gagging, spitting out my pie and trying not to vomit. I am still not allowed to bringt he apple pie for holidays.

I was making a sugar cookie pizza base late one night (basically, sugar cookie dough on a pizza stone). I put it in the oven and then began cutting up fruit and other things. I soon forgot about the cookie dough because I was sooooo tired. I went to bed, but awoke when, in my dream, something sure did smell good! Needless to say, the cookie was ruined and I had to start over.

I was feeling the pressure of preparing a birthday dinner AND a layer cake for my wife's birthday. The dinner prep was done cooking in process. I was hurrying to get the cake and as I was beating the dough the rubber scrapper I was cleaning the sides with got caught in the beaters and bent them beyond use. I ended up finishing with a hand held mixer. Luckily it was not my fingers.

I was making my tried-and-true birthday cake using a recipe from the NY Times magazine. Somehow, I forgot to add both the baking powder AND the baking soda. Needless to say, I had a flat and not very tasty pancake instead of a fluffy, yummy birthday cake.

The first Turkey I cooked for Thanksgiving I forgot to remove the giblet pack. Later checking on the Turkey I noticed paper inside the turkey.
