The Duchess of Windsor's Pork Cake

The closest I can come to describing the Pork Fruitcake is its similarity to dark sticky bran muffins. Since it was a family tradition before I was born, I don't think I ever thought about it as being unusual. It was always a treat. I do know it had enough dark rum to keep it through the mailings, but it was gone within the week of receiving it!

The Duchess of Windsor's Pork Cake

This reminds me of a "Pork Fruitcake" we received each Christmas from a German friend of my grandparents' in Stockton, CA. I was told it had ground pork (back then it was very fatty.) Very dark and moist, with chopped dates and walnuts.

The Cartoon Kitchen: Recipes Have Never Been Funnier

Hi there! I was frantically searching for a Cartoon Kitchen recipe from my shoebox "file" today. Fortunately, I found the disintergating piece of the L.A. Times, with a copyright mark date of 1984. The recipe is for an African casserole dish called, "Babootie." Mr. Gonick's recipes were always simple, satisfying and fun to share with friends and family members. It made me wonder whether the artist ever published a book of these gems. It would be such a find for a whole new generation of fledgling foodies, including my son who is just about as old as that piece of newsprint. I'm glad I found your blog, and hope you can tell me if such a publication is available, or, that you will pass on my suggestion to your wife and Mr. Gonick. Thank you!
