36 Eggs Left in the Car

When I was in college, I did something similar and left a carton of eggs in the grocery bag overnight. I called my dad, who's a chef, and he said that eggs should not be left out of temp (over 40 degrees) for more than two hours. When I asked him why people in other countries don't refrigerate their eggs, his response was that once the eggs are refrigerated, they need to stay cold.

@justin h- I don't think the issue is salmonella, I think its a quesion of whether the eggs have spoiled.

So, unless you're absolutely sure the car stayed under 40 degrees, I would toss them.

♥♥♥ = Homecooking. What's for dinner Nov. 23?

I made my version of SmittenKitchen's Crisp Black Bean Tacos http://smittenkitchen.com/2009/02/crispy-black-bean-tacos-with-feta-and-slaw/.

Baked tortilla, lots of black beans with onions and chili powder mixed up with feta, and topped with a huge pile of what I'm now calling "southwest slaw." Its just a big plate of delicious.

Autumn Candy

Hated: Mr. Goodbar, Crackle, Crunch, Smarties

Loved: the black and orange chewy candies everyone else hated, non-chocolate flavored Tootsie Rolls (especially vanilla in the blue and white wrapper), Hershey bars.

The best part was that there was one woman who lived around the corner who gave out FULL SIZED, brand name candy bars. We never saw her any other time, but she was our favorite neighbor.

Foods from you childhood you don't miss.

@korovka: my mom used to give us sour cream and bananas sprinkled with sugar. i remember thinking that i really didn't like it but she loved it so much that my tastebuds must have been wrong.

i still can't eat sour cream at all.

Thai Stir-fry? Simple and amazing.

I don't have any real experience with Thai-specific stir fry, but I would suggest using the techniques you know already (small, equal-sized pieces, high heat, etc.) with the Thai flavors you love. I found this site that might help with the ingredients: http://www.thaifoodandtravel.com/ingredients.html

French Onion Soup

I second everyone who mentioned Julia's recipe--it's perfection!
I've also made it with veggie stock back when I was vegetarian and it's delicious even then. The most important part is the wine...it really brings all the flavors together. I made it once without the wine and the whole thing just fell flat.

Dinner Tonight: Chicken Fried Steak with Cream Gravy

I just made this recipe with cubed steak. I know we've discussed that its probably sacreligious to not use round steaks, but that's what I had on hand! I pounded it a little too thin, but the breading was absolutely perfect. And the cream gravy...yum! I made it with lemony green beans and it was the perfect meal. Does anyone ever make this to eat with grits?

Funeral Food

As someone who just recently lost her mother, I would like to suggest that you do not include cold cuts or sandwich meat or lasagne. These were the most popular foods brought to us after the funeral, and we unfortunately were not in any state to bring the extras to a homeless shelter, as someone above suggested. Eventually, we had rotting roast beef in the fridge and believe me, that was unpleasant. And @lemons, you are completely right--refrigerator space is prime real estate in the days after a funeral, so non-refrigerated foods would be welcome. I also agree with @moibec, if someone offers to bring food or something else, say "yes," as it might help you to feel a little more taken care of, and it helps the other person's healing process as well.

You truly do get what you pay for

One thing no one's mentioned--bread! Right near me is a bakery that mills its own flour and they make the best bread you can buy (outside real French baguettes, of course). The bread is almost like homemade, which is great for people like me who love fresh bread but aren't great/too lazy to bake it.

The United States of Pizza: Alaska

@mooner: First of all, Florida luckily has lots of New York influence so the pizza there CAN be pretty good, if you know where to look.

Secondly, I'd like to put in a request for a review of pizza in Missouri, especially in Kansas City. I've lived here for a year and I still haven't had a decent slice.

Regional (or Once-Regional) Burger Chains

Five Guys is by far the best burger out there. Great toppings, excellent patty/patties, and the fries...oh, don't get me started on the fries with malt vinegar!
