i just made that recipe for the rhubarb "big crumb" coffeecake from last wednesday's ny times dining in section and it got me me wondering about what is the best way to keep baked goods fresh? tupperware? wrapped in saranwrap? in the fridge?

Diet Strategy

as much as i hate to admit it, i do atkins (the induction phase) for a couple days or a week if i need to lose about 5 pounds. i love carbs (well, actually most carbs - i dont really care at all for pasta) and i'm a vegetarian which should mean that atkins is not for me, but i do a modified version (still going along with all the induction rules) and it works.
the first time i tried it i did atkins induction phase for 6 days and i lost 7 pounds, and no, i didn't gain the weight back once i started eating my regular diet again.

where can a girl drink alone in manhattan?

im up in monringside but am frequently downtown (w village) so the location doesnt matter all that much, especially if i find a good place. and im not really into the 15 dollar cosmos. more like a beer or a glass of wine - or if im feeling special enough, a martini. and more of a local, neighborhood crowd/feel. thanks for the help + ideas!

Seeking advice about the cuisine of Scotland and Ireland.

as for experiencing the culture, i second the pub idea. i lived for a short while in northern ireland - and traveled a fair bit around the Republic - and i think some of the best food i ate was in pubs (my default meal was a pint of cider, a bowl of the soup of the day and a thick slice of brown [or wheaten] bread - so delicious). let me also say that the whole potato stereotype is very much true - i found myself eating potatoes in some form at every meal (i would especially recommend champ, its lovely).

Cheddar Bay Biscuits of Self-Loathing

both of my parents have a thing for McD's filet-o-fish (just...ew) and right now i'm pretty fond of their new paul newman iced hazelnut coffee.

How do you get toddlers to eat Vegetables?

the 17 month old that i babysit for absolutely loves these things: http://www.drpraegers.com/products/products.aspx?SID=1&Product_ID=477&Category_ID=19 -- dr. praeger's spinach pancakes -- i know its not the same as fresh veggies but the ingredient list isnt horrifying and they have a bit of protein in them (from the egg whites) and theyre so easy to make in the microwave.

I really, really wish I could tolerate even slightly fatty or gristlly or chewy meat textures. There are so many Asian foods that I can't even look at. And now with the in status of pork bellies, another apparentle wonderful dining choice is excluded.

I love all meats, but they must be carefully trimmed of all fat and gristle.

It is sad.

A shoe box full of tea, LIFE cereal, canned tuna, canned beans, currants, dried cranberries, oatmeal, a bar of dark chocolate, and packets of chilli seasoning that my mom thought I wanted. She doesn't believe me that I make it from scratch.

You'd see some olive oil, several cans of black beans, boxes of cat food, some laksa paste, 2 cans of coconut milk, arborio rice, regular rice, some breakfast cereal (I use it to mix with yogurt), a bottle of tomato sauce, sesame oil, peanut oil, spices, and pasta.

What food do you wish you liked, but don't?

Cilantro and zucchini.

Also, (and dont kill me!) bahn mi sandwiches. Something about the texture of the meat...I can do the chicken version, but then still, the pate they use has a wierd texture.

Olives, definitely. Minced up and in a sauce is OK, and olive oil is great. But popping an olive in my mouth? Ugh.

Cumin. I can taste it three rooms away, and it ruins anything it comes near.

I used to despise tomatoes, but learned to like them as an adult. Now I can't have a sandwich without 'em. Still won't eat them just by themselves, however.

Now, how about a list of the things I wish my son would like? Oh, sorry, not enough bandwidth.

I have the brussel sprout problem as well. If fact is it the only thing I cannot eat. It actually makes me really sad that i cannot like them. I buy them every so often to try again and everytime I don't like them. I've read about taking the individual leaves off and sauting them and they are supposed to be good...so I'll have to try it that way next time.
