Wall Street Journal (Sorta) Does the Math: Delivery vs. Frozen Pizza
Glad to see I'm not alone in my love of the Totino's. Has to be the Supreme and has to be cooked in the oven directly on the rack. It may be just a $1 pizza, but sheesh, no one deserves a microwaved pizza.
Tips for a beginner?
As much as I love the sites, the books are gong to be what you return to.
The Betty Crocker has saved my crocker more than a few times. If it was good enough for my Grandma then it's good enough for me.
I picked up "How to Boil Water: for my husband and we both use it as it is instructive without being pedantic, with lots of photos and simple but delicious recipes for basics.
Get one really exhaustive book on baking if you don't bake a lot but are still interested. Culinary textbooks are excellent finds as well.
Make soups! Making stock and then experimenting with whatever is in the cabinet is one of the best ways to learn to trust your instincts and your taste buds.

The Weirdest Thing I've Ever Made
Just yesterday, I thawed out some Brunswick stew and realized it was more Brunswick than stew. I didn't want to dilute the flavor with broth so instead I made some Velveeta and shells and crumbled some bacon and put it all together. Delicious.
Also a perennial favorite: A-1 with cucumbers
Ginger hummus

I also love the Totino's party pizza. I used to eat this with regularity when I was a kid. With this economy I think I need to start buying these again.

Welcome Cope215. Ditto what everyone else has said. I'm new here too and I love it. Just jump in and enjoy.

I cannot emphasize strongly enough that you should purchase the ice cream attachment (from Amazon or wherever is cheapest) or have someone gift it to you for Christmas. Go to davidlebovitz.com and use any of his incredibly yummy ice cream recipes. Alternatively, I recommend the ice cream cookbooks "A Passion for Ice Cream" by Emily Luchetti or "The Perfect Scoop" by David Lebovitz. Also, some of Gale Gand's fabu ice cream recipes are still on Food Network (try the Mascarpone with Crystallized Ginger -- amazing with molten chocolate cakes). I use mine to have homemade ice cream on hand all year round.

I make so many more cookies now that I don't have to cream butter and sugar together by hand. (Sure, starting to defrost the butter earlier might have also improved that process, but a KitchenAid is so much more fun.)
They are also useful for standing next to while they are mixing and exclaiming loudly to anyone within earshot how you can't believe how fast your batter/dough just got mixed.

Send it to me. Sign the card Santa. This would make a firm believer out of me! :)

Make macarons! They are the most wonderful light airy crunchy chewy cookie ever!
Here's a link with lots of other links! (bonus!)

Cool! I use mine for all kinds of cookie doughs and batters, and occasionally use the ice cream maker attachment. I recommend getting a Beater Blade, which is an after-market purchase--it does a better job of scraping the bowl and incorporating ingredients.

There are so many! Well, a few months ago one of our local pig farmers had quarter suckling pigs for sale at the farmers' market. His pork is old breed, free-range raised: the real thing. I scored the skin and rubbed w/ salt and pepper and a little Aleppo. Placed it on a pile of sage and thyme from the garden, with some orange zest and a head of garlic cut in half and roasted about 2 hours. While the pork rested, I deglazed the pan with a little white wine and chicken stock...just to make a little bit of liquid. The skin was crisp; the meat was soft, moist and seemingly fat free; all was fraqrant with the herbs. And my two best friends who love to cook and eat were there to share it. Perfect! Thanks, Emile! My favorite pork memory is back when I was a sous chef at a restaurant and I dared a waiter to drink a quart of pork fat......and he did. It was a good day.

Lucky Lucky YOU!!!! Congrats! We got ours as a wedding gift...dare I say it almost 20 years ago and it is great!!! I use it for everything. Next to my Cuisinart, it's my go to machine. I love it for kneading bread and pizza dough. My 15 yo son is getting into baking and he uses it quite a bit. Altho he does occasionally need to be reminded to lock the bowl in place.....

Online: Ruhlman, Serious Eats, Allrecipes.
Books: I am a devoted user of Elizabeth David's French Provincial Cookbooks and the Be-ro baking books!
I am also enjoying cooking items on Youtube, there are a number of home cooks on there who show things that TV shows often assume "everyone knows" e.g. what does a "simmer" look like, how small is small for "diced small" . I've been cooking a long time and am still learning from these.

Mine is 35 years old and is used several times a week. I used to bake bread weekly, but when the kids left home, that dropped off. I may make some today though because of this thread! Heavy cookie dough, whipped cream, 7 minute frosting...this is the best appliance I have ever owned, although I am very fond of my processor.

From blogs and online sources, I've had the most consistent success with recipes from Elise at Simply Recipes. They not only please me, but my family as well. While I enjoy reading thepioneerwoman.com and her recipes always sound good, I've had more misses than hits with her recipes. In fact, one went straight to the garbage disposal -- no one would eat it.
In terms of cookbook authors, Mark Bittman, Ina Garten (aka The Barefoot Contessa) and of course, Betty Crocker. One of my favorite gifts for new cooks is Pam Anderson's How to Cook Without a Book. I also like Fine Cooking's series "Cooking without Recipes."
I've had very good luck with Martha Stewart's Everyday Food -- the magazine, the book (Great Food Fast) and everydayfoodmag.com. Also marthastewart.com/dinnertonight.

Last year I visited a friend in Vegas and she took me to a little dive bar named the Double Down. The Double Down has two signature drinks; one is obscenely titled & I shall not name it though I believe Anthony Bourdain had it (saw that ep after the trip), the other is a bacon martini. Well, I do love the bacon so I got one. The bartender grabbed a bottle of vodka with bacon floating in it. Seriously.
Conclusion? Straight alcohol not consumed in shot form is not really my thing but it was interesting. The smell was absolutely putrid, but the taste wasn't bad. Like vodka with a smack of bacon.
A much more delicious story involves hippies & a Wilbur roasted underground luau style, but the bacon martini is definitely my favorite pork story.

When I realized the difference between standard supermarket pork shoulder and organic, free range pork. Amy from Amy's Meats (KCMO area) was giving out samples at Whole Foods. Really, I bought it just because it felt awkward to eat her food and not buy some. Truthfully, I was a little afraid when I saw how much I had bought (quantity and price). But, when I cooked it, it was AMAZING! Rich and sweet and oh-so tender. It is all I buy now.

My favorite bacon memory ... one Christmas, I spent with close friends. One of them cooked breakfast for us and used SOY bacon ..... it was so wrong but very funny that she tried to "trick" us!

As much as I love bacon and all things bacon, my favorite bacon memory is actually a negative experience. We had a bunch of friends at Zingerman's Roadhouse and, after a truly wonderful meal, I ordered the bacon apple pie. And normally while bacon goes with everything (mostly), this one just...didn't...work. Maybe it was the large chunks of bacon that didn't fit texturally, maybe it was the abrupt clash of sweet and savory with no bridging elements. Even so, we had a lot of fun passing around the plate and getting everyone's reactions, and had a lively discussion on how the dish could be improved. I think this was just one small bump in what was otherwise an excellent dining experience, and the entertainment value if nothing else made it quite worth it!

My favorite pork memory is of the pork roasts that my mom would make for Sunday dinner. She stuffed little slivers of garlic inside the meat, roasted it until it was falling apart and then served it up with big piles of sauerkraut and mashed potatoes.

Confession...I gave up bacon for about 15 years. It was the highly irrational decision of a three year old. Thankfully I rediscovered the crispy stuff in college as it was one of the more palatable breakfast offerings at the dining hall. Oh, if I could turn back time... I need to make up for those lost years.

I really have a thing for sausage, any kind, so being in Berlin and eating a real German bratwurst with spicy mustard is just about the best thing that ever happened to me in terms of pork products. The brat was about a foot long and 1/4 inch around and was served in a crusty roll about the size of a hamburger bun. So hard to eat, but oh so good.
Of course, that was the same trip that I walked into a charcuterie in Belgium and was so depressed that I couldn't buy any sausages because I had no way to keep them fresh or cook them. So many beautiful pieces of meat, too!
