NYC's Burger of the Month Club (BOTM)

What bugs me here is that there are all types of burgers lumped into one list. Personally I like to break them up into fast food, pub/restaurant, and specialty. I love shake shack but I wouldn't put it into the same list as Royale (my #1 pup/restaurant burger). It's just such a different experience (Shake Shack is my #1 fast food burger, white castle #2). The rule is simple, if you can't order it medium rare, it's fast food. And on the same note, if it's got ingredients that are atypical to a burger like guac, peanut butter or redwine sauce, it's gotta go on a different list too. (Piano's Red Wine burger #1 on my specialty burger list)
And as far as judging burgers with bacon and cheese, as long as these guys are always getting it exactly how they'd like it, then why not. I personally would never order a plain burger and judge like that because i need the cheese. In the same way, I'd never be able to judge a burger covered in ketchup because I don't like ketchup on my burger. So as long as you order it just the way you like it, the same way every time, then I'd consider it valid judging.

Katie Lee Joel Defends Her Burger Bash Victory

You know that's what happens when people get fanatical. The culture segments. I have a burger club in NYC where we venture to dif burger spots to post opinions and such (on facebook) and I tell you, it's hard to just say what's the best "burger." I personally have faves in several categories. To me, Katie Lee Joel's burger is a specialty burger, which i would never give "top prize" to because when I say "the best burger" I'm talking about a sandwich that falls into what most would consider a traditional hamburger.

And look, I'd probably love any burger you'd have me eat. I love burgers of all types. But lines have to be drawn. When you start replacing parts of a traditional burger, there has to be a point where it becomes a sandwich of another name. I don't even count fast food (that includes Shake Shack) as traditional. Sorry Shake Shack, sorry Pianos' goat-cheese burger, Royale has Top Prize for me.

Initial Response: Action Burger

I went to Action burger. The burger I had was juicy. I thought it was damn good. I noticed the "smoke" and said aloud that I thought they used liquid smoke. It was great for the price and the neighborhood. I told some friends about it and when they tried to go it was closed down. Not sure if it's even back open. Hope so. The area could use a good burger (Dumont is around the corner. But service is slooow there.)

Shake Shack Branch Coming to Upper West Side

The Shake Shack at Madison Square Park is now also "year-round."

Royale: Alphabet City, Manhattan

Royale is very good. But I gotta say my fave (even though they recently got rid of the english muffin buns) is still a Pianos burger. You must try one... If you don't want to try one of the specialty burgers, you can ask for just a simple cheese burger (not on the menu).

The specialty burgers:
Grand Piano Burger emmental cheese & special house sauce
Red Wine Burger black pepper crusted w/ caramelized onions & bacon
Goat Cheese Burger fresh herbs, goat cheese, basil, & shiitake

The hamburger and fries at Clancy's Irish Pub on Second Avenue is wonderful, thick and cooked to order. Every time I visit the city I go there and indulge. A huge, flavorful burger and a great price. My once a year treat!

"To me food is about bringing people together, not criticizing each other."

That's a commendable philosophy, but if you don't like being judged, don't enter a competition.

Black Iron Burger Shop Opens Doors Today

@adubs: Black Iron Burger Shop Doesn't Live Up to Its Potential. Though Nick, who reviewed it, is hopeful they'll eventually get things straight there. Probably due for a re-review soon.

Pulp Fiction, only gets better with Time and it started very High on the list!

Shake Shack Branch Coming to Upper West Side

Maybe, but it's not like the burgers don't stand on their own; Shake Shack burgers are totally amazing. I for one applaud the expansion as long as they keep the quality level up.

I think the year round shack loses some of that spring time love you have for the burger. Now with it branching out I hope the quality stays the same.

Shake Shack Branch Coming to Upper West Side

As the owner of Vera's Burger Shack, which started on the beach in Vancouver Canada, I can tell you, when we expanded we were very conscious not to "gussy up" our decor, 9 locations and counting, no one has said we are not a shack.

Shake Shack Branch Coming to Upper West Side

Yes. Of course it is. But I think the crucial word there is "comfort," not "year-round." SS-MSP is only comfortable in moderate temperatures, so the phrase "will serve its brown bag fare in year-round comfort" is still a valid one.
