Dinner Tonight: Chicken-Fried Rice

ew. you want a vibrant and clean fried rice? it should not be BROWN. recipe: scrambled eggs, frozen peas, white rice. zero oil, or a teaspoon at most. combine the ingredients in an order that makes sense for your kitchen. add lots of salt and pepper. scallions or sriracha if you must. there's NOTHING BETTER. you'll be delighted by the absence of oil. i laughed out loud at bittman's list of "essential" ingredients.

What Are Your Best Vending Machine Memories?

there's a fountain of wine in northern spain (free, but only open to pilgrims along the camino de santiago). you're not supposed to bottle wine to take away, but you can drink as much wine as you want, within reason. i sat down next to it for a few hours this summer and laughed at the fact that next to the free tap was a vending machine filled with minibottles of wine. and then i bought some.

Kimchi Donuts from Dunkin' Donuts in Korea

actually, the 5 flavors were all launched *in Korea*. The kimchi croquette isn't good at DD (usually cold and soggy) but it's quite common at bakeries in Korea and is generally very delicious. The Greek yogurt donut is gross-- sort of a tangy custard-filled thing.

Thanks, all! The pork is a great idea, as is the salad dressing. I'll try it on a piece of pork loin (or more likely, pork belly). You've also inspired me to cut it into cubes and use it as the broth in steamed pork soup dumplings.
