Cook the Book: 'Baked, New Frontiers in Baking'

The jam-filled cookies my sister, cousin and I used to make with my grandma. Usually apricot, raspberry or strawberry jam.

Haven't had them in a long time, but I would love to make some myself!

Hooray for the Sunset Grill & Tap! Oh how I miss the beer selection and how it helped me wash down many beer-steam burgers and giant plates of nachos.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

Spinach and feta made one of the most delicious combinations I've had.

For burgers, I am a big fan of R.F. O'Sullivan's in Somerville. I think they are better than Bartley's

Best neighbourhood spots for dinner on the "other side of the river" Cambridge T.W. Food Restaurant (Huron Village), Oleana or Cuchi Cuchi (Inman Square) Craigie on Main (Central Square)

ALthough plain cheese is always appreciated, I make 2 special pizzas that my family enjoys. One is buffalo wing chicken with pepper jack cheese, and the other is smoked mozz with sweet sausage and roasted red peppers.

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

Feta cheese with tomatoes fresh out of the garden and kalamata olives sprinkled over a round of dough brushed with olive oil, minced garlic, greek oregano and a thin layer of mozzarella cheese is one of my favorite summer time pies. Even better when it's done on the grill.

smoked, thin-sliced ham and green olives...yum
And I make my own pizza at home
Besides plain cheese, the above mentioned are great for a change of pace

Why Pepperoni Pizza Sucks

No pepperone, love it uncooked with cheese & crackers or antipasto, but not on pizza, overpowers everything else. Same thing with bacon. Good sausage meat or plain cheese for me. And don't even start with those cowpies from Chicago!

Sausage, chicken and cashew. When the cashews get just a little burn on 'em, oh yeah baby!

I agree. Why is pepperoni the default ingredient?? I just think it's the most fun to say. Pepperoni.

I totally agree that Brown Sugar Cafe is the best Thai in the city, but sadly, they're closing!

I was also disappointed not to see Picco (513 Tremont Street) mentioned anywhere for pizza or otherwise. If you like a well done pizza, Picco is where it's at. My personal favorite is their chanterelle and leek pizza (although I don't think that's on their permanent menu, but if they have it definitely definitely try it)! Their arancini are to die for, as well as their warm spinach salad with pancetta, white beans and goat cheese. I have re-created this salad many a time, and it has quickly become a favorite of mine. They also make really wonderful homemade ice cream (the caramel swirl is my favorite, and the the dark chocolate brownie sundae is sinful) and italian soda.

And finally, best Tapas, Toro (1704 Washington Street). It may be crowded for dinner, but it's worth the wait! I recommend the patatas bravas, the chicken and potato empanadas, the grilled corn (this is a must), and of course the paella.

Grandma Crocetti's Italian fried dough cookies., cenci. So good. And the best part was the powdered sugar you got all over yourself when you ate the cookies.

It is a tie between my mother's cinnamon rolls -- made with raisins and just the right amount of vanilla glaze -- and her recipe for blonde brownies with chopped walnuts and chocolate chips. I just made my mother's blonde brownie recipe for my three year old daughter and she can't get enough of them. Eating them reminds me of my childhood.

I was always most excited when my mother made her chocolate chip mondel bread / mondel brot. I certainly have not outgrown it - now, I make it myself (not too often!).

I loved the peanut butter cup sundae from Friendly's ice cream. two scoops of vanilla with chocolate fudge and peanut butter sauce, with whipped cream and a reese's peanut butter cup on top!

When I was growing up, my mother made the most amazing Chocolate Cream pies! I STILL ask for one when I go to visit her!!
