The Physiology of Foie: Why Foie Gras is Not Unethical

seriousb - I don't think you actually read the article.
The ducks seem acclimated to the force feeding much as you or I would be (epiglottis or not) if it were a part of our daily lives from birth and our only source of nourishment.
If you'd read the article (or actually paid attention), you'd know they're only force-fed for a month before slaughter. If you'd spent any time actually thinking about the subject, you might have stumbled upon the realization that if your body is lacking or differing in anatomical structures, you cannot base an estimation of how a manipulation of those structures feels on your own experiences. If you're a dude - what does it feel like when something hits your cervix? If you're a chick - what does it feel like when something hits your prostate? See what I mean?

For me it's not a matter of anthropomorphizing (thinking animals are people) but rather a simple recognition that we are all animals and that it's not polite to go eating each other when we have ready access to other delicious foods more than capable of satisfying our needs.
And you'd also have read Kenji's (entirely accurate) statement that eating meat at all is a whole other debate for a different time. Obviously, if you're vegetarian/vegan, this whole debate is moot for you.

So, y'know...it's a good idea to actually read (and/or spend at least 30 seconds thinking about) something before offering opinions on it.

The majority of seriousb's comment was calling out the lack of facts and seemingly euphemistic tone this advertisement, er, I mean, article about Foie Gras sounds. I usually praise Kenji's writings as materpieces, but this has an obvious slant. The article is titled "Why Foie Gras is Not Unethical." That's a pretty subjective thought, don't ya think. And it's not even blanket statement, as Kenji is only referring to one farm, who is most likely paying for this article. It has nothing to do with seriousb's perceived dietary patterns. So it might be a good idea to actually read the comment you are responding to. Sure, there are farms where the ducks are treated like royalty, but that doesnt excuse Foie Gras as ethical.

That sure is a big block of cashew cheese though. Most vegan pizzas are less over the top.

Poll: Food Terms You Should Stop Using in 2010

"I'd like to nominate "sustainable." Mankind has busted its collective arse for a few millennia to overcome a "sustainable" existence."

Umm...really? Mankind has been around for a few millenia (which really isn't that long, when compared to things that actually matter, like the world), thus we should not care about our impact on our environment?

I think you got it backwards. We've been ignoring (or "overcoming," as you so happily put it) our impact for ages. We've (maybe I'm a bit hopeful) become smarter, and learned that our actions have reactions, no matter how good we are at turning away.
