Grocery Ninja: Pandan, the Asian Vanilla

That looks divine...... It's the second mention of pandan I came cross today and the first was at an American beauty blog. Way to go, pandan.

I can almost smell it...

Expensive Wine, So Five Minutes Ago

Chilean wine Cono Sur makes a good sauv blanc and pinot noir, while Aussie vino Wyndham Estate also does a great budget pinot noir.

I think the economic downturn will have more people drinking at home so I think budget wine is seriously recession proof.

How Far Does Restaurant Loyalty Go?

Hmmm I think you handled it well but I wouldn't go back. Was it something raw or carpaccio? If that's the case, you could be just intolerant of what you ate.

Has the Credit Crunch Affected What You Eat?

Being a recent retrenchee, I'm eating out a lot less at restaurants and buying less gourmet items like expensive cheese, wine, and good cuts of meat, ham, and sausages. It's probably better health-wise. I won't compromise on choosing brown rice and whole wheat which are always more expensive than the white varieties. And fruit — it's pretty pricey in Tokyo, but I still make an effort to have a fruit a day.

Economy Bad, People Eat More at Home, Food Magazines Prosper

Well I don't subscribe to food magazines at all but I certainly check out recipe blogs a lot more since I cook almost everyday. It makes sense if you live in an expensive city...and it's much healthier.

Dinner Tonight: Hainanese Chicken Rice

Chicken rice in Singapore is a staple dish, hence the boringness of it. Even as a Singaporean, I wouldn't say I find it an orgasmic culinary experience but it is a tasty, savoury treat once in awhile.

Gordon Ramsay Cooks with Fox Two More Seasons

Gordon Ramsay is hawwwwt. I, too, prefer Kitchen Nightmares over Hell's Kitchen. It's his sheer display of machismo and take-charge attitude that make me want to watch him.

Look! Googleburgers

Is that faux melted cheese (custard) and bacon (weird strips of chocolate)? If it's real, I'd say the good folks at Google are probably high on sugar all day.

Is Locavorism Practical Where You Live? Freaknomics States the Obvious

I am a fan of the first Freakonomics book but this is just ridiculous. Canned vegetables are disgusting and bad for your health. I totally support the local food movement, too. Health is something they should consider as part of their logic. Would it really help the economy if there are hordes of sick people eventually?

The Bacon Hamburger Fatty Melt, a Bacon Burger with Two Bacon-Stuffed Grilled Cheese Sandwiches as Bun

If I had any bacon left, I'd do this idea tomorrow for lunch/dinner. As it is, to really put the topper on it, I had a few ideas on how to make this really nice and unhealthy.... first, take a page from the burger with the cheese ooze core... stuff some cheese in the burger as well! maybe chop up some bacon to mix in with the meat too. Next, gotta add some mayo, then slap a fried egg in there as well. If you're still alive and not on your way to the hospital after the first bite, then I'd applaud you, but you may want to have someone ready just in case.... in case you take a second bite.

Any clue as to what has happened?

Papatzul: Under the Radar and Underappreciated

I've been to NY with my with about a week ago (April 2009). I was so disappointed, I decided that when I come back I should post a note so that other people would be weary of this restaurant.
I have to say the service was good, the food turned out to be the problem. I ordered the duck enchiladas and my wife ordered a vegetarian course. It was greasy, drooling with disgusting sauce and had little resemblance to duck meat in any form (dead or alive). The basic theme repeated in my wife dish as well, to many ingredients with undefined taste.
Bottom line, I truly and honestly recommend to skip this place.

Glad you liked Roasted Delights. It's a cool place. I agree with you about the pork chops. They're almost a pork dessert. You're right about the bacon and egg fried rice and the pork chops not being on the menu. I should have mentioned that in my post.

Roasted Delights, Chinese Barbecue At Its Best [Update: no longer open]

Thanks for cluing us into this place, Ed. We ventured down on Saturday. Had the roast duck with rice which was very tasty, with a great sauce. My son adored the bacon and egg fried rice. However, we found the “pork chops” to be waay too sweet; couldn't eat more than two pieces. But altogether a real find. (NB: We could not find the pork chops or the fried rice on the menu; we had to bring out the printout of the SE review and point to the pictures.)

Roasted Delights, Chinese Barbecue At Its Best [Update: no longer open]

As a Hong-Konger here, I would say the fried rice would be alright but not in the full glory a fried should have. The rice is not supple enough; that is what can be judged from the pic . But I think we can't ask for too much about this. By the way,we called roast pig as 'Siu Yuk' in Cantonese(which actually means 'roasted meat') and roast pork as 'Cha Siu'(which means 'roasted on a skewer').
Just to share something with any Chinese food lover.

@Da_Vid The roast pig is a whole roasted pig where the skin crisps up really nice. Roast pork is a cut of pork that's been slathered in sauces and then roasted - the result is a red glazed piece of pork.
