A Fantastic New York City-Style Burger from HB Burger
that looks absolutely NOTHING like the burger I had there about 5 weeks ago. not even close. i ordered mine med-rare (as always) and it came out more medium and the beef blend/flavor was not memorable at all. i'm guessing they changed meat purveyor in the past month. there's no chance in hell you would have liked the burgers my friends and i were served when we were there. They didn't know who you were, right?

i will give it to them that the concept of a BOTM club is great and quite timely given the nation's burger frenzy. but of the 7 guys the majority of them order their burgers medium well or medium, w/ only 2 medium rares. to me that's ridiculous. how much credence can you really put into their rankings when they order like that? and it goes to show -- have you seen the rankings -- they rank goodburger ahead of mollys, blue smoke, veselka, blt burger, and shake shack.

love that you guys featured blimpy burger. i went to Univ of Michigan and we ate there all the time. of course we had to "pre-party" first. part of the reason i gained 30lbs in college. i took my little brother there and he got screamed at by the lady behind the counter -- wish i could remember her name. have to go with the fried egg like papalovesmambo said.

French Dip Sandwich in NYC?
I'll second two that have already been mentioned -- Houston's French Dip is just downright sick, as is the one at Waterfront Ale House.

Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
just had one of these bad boys this past sunday night and it was UNREAL. best burger i've had in recent memory. worth the $26 price tag. it was still all i could think about while tasting the benjamin burger and other great burgers at today's burger challenge.
Obama, Biden Eat at Ray's Hell Burger
He didn't say 'please' once during his entire order.
Grand Opening of Flip, a New Burger Joint in the Manhattan Bloomingdale's
Not the same as the Atlanta Flip opened by Richard Blais of Top Chef. Blais has indicated he wants to open his Flip burger joint in NYC. This one probably won't even be around by then.

HBO Documentary on Le Cirque Debuts December 29
best parts were watching the Maccioni family eat at mcdonald's and celebrating country's 3 stars with Zakarian, which obviously preceded the faield DOH inspection and the sudden decision to change Country to Country Steak.
What should a burger joint look like?
Who cares what the place looks like...that's absurd. Take Molly's for example...it's one of the best burger joints in Manhattan and it's a sh*thole inside...that's what gives it its character. I actually think it's a negative for a burger place to have chic decor. I bet there is an inverse relationship b/t the chic-ness of the decor and the quality of the burger. Look at Pop Burger. Best burger joints I know have a kitschy, old-school divey pub feel to them, i.e. O'Connell's Pub in St. Louis, Ann's snack bar in Atlanta, Corner Bistro and Burger Joint in NYC, Louis' Lunch in New Haven, you get the picture.
'Top Chef' Contestant Richard Blais Opening Flip Burger Boutique Next Week
Just posted this morning on Flip Burger website:
"We are opening Wednesday, December 10th for dinner only. Lunch and
Dinner service will begin on Thursday, December 11th."
Thanksgiving restaurants in NYC
We've had good luck the past couple of years with BRGuest restaurants. Had a great $35 prixe fixe at Primehouse last year (I think it's $42 this year) and had a very good T-giving dinner at Blue Water Grill the year before. Even though you think steakhouse with Primehouse, they had great turkey + gravy, stuffing, sweet potatoes, etc.

@NickSolares I couldn't agree with you more. I think rare burgers are the tastiest thing in the world. I've had my fair share of raw burgers and I to this day have never gotten sick from it, in fact that's how I cook my burgers (and steak)! To those who find this repulsive and disgusting, enjoy your tasteless, overcooked, dry, hockey puck burgers!
I'll be making a trip to HBBurgers!

Nick, your description of the tasting experience left me almost grossed out with your porn-like rhapsody! That said, I keep scrolling up to read it again. Definitely going to have to experience the porn-y goodness of these burgers soon. Thanks, I think, for the review!
A Fantastic New York City-Style Burger from HB Burger
@DenghisCon I have been eating rare burgers since I was a teenager (that was back in the 1980's) since reviewing burgers here at AHT I have eaten 100's of burgers always rare when I am given a choice. I have never gotten ill from a hamburger (although I can't say the same thing about pork, which is invariably cooked through) I am not saying that e,coli and other food born illness don't exist but they are far more likely the result of poor hygiene and cross contamination (from raw chicken or eggs for example) For all its faults if you eat meat you have to at least have faith in the USDAs inspection system which monitors any meat you will eat in a hamburger. Now obviously once the meat reaches the restaurant there is the chance of contamination that can effect even in well cooked meat. The point is that a dirty kitchen is dangerous no matter what temp you get your burger. But eating raw or rare meat is not in and of itself a health risk.

@Nick, @jobeth Hey Nick I don't want to turn you great review and what looks like a tasty burger discovery for us local to NYC into a food safety discussion, but you probably have more experience than I on this so I would like to hear your opinion in that I kinda agree with jobeth. It it my understaning, specifically in regards to beef, that bacteria such as e.coli are found only on the surface of the cut. So, with a steak cooked (even rarest of the rare) with an exterior char safely removes any danger of bacteria. However, with ground beef, any bacteria on the surface of the meat is effectively distributed throughout the mix when ground. Hence, you are only really safe if you cook the ground beef to a temerature all the way through that kills the bacteria. Otherwise, your rare in the middle patty can be contaminated. It stands to reason that low volume, high quality butchers exercising care in their handling procedures reduce the risk of exposure to bacteria, but it is not like you can see it. Your thoughts?
A Fantastic New York City-Style Burger from HB Burger
@jobeth You should probably avoid this blog if rare meat makes you queasy. And I don't for one minute by your ridiculous claim that rare burgers are repulsive to anyone outside of the US. Have you ever heard of a little dish called steak tartare? For the record we don't make our burgers with cows, we make them using steers. And in the case of HB burger it is all naturally raised (hormone free) beef from Creekstone Farms Kentucky that is custom ground hours before it is served. It is of a higher quality (graded USDA Choice and above) than a lot of steak.
A Fantastic New York City-Style Burger from HB Burger
Rare burger = really repulsive to anyone outside the US. Oh gag, I can't even look at the picture. What kind of meat do you guys get your burgers made from to want to put it into your mouth basically raw? Unless the beef comes from cows fed in heaven's pastures, processed by angels you wouldn't get me putting a rare burger close to my face. Rare beef is divine in all other forms, but BURGERS? Isn't it sloppy and cold?
A Fantastic New York City-Style Burger from HB Burger
@WinedAndDined Sorry about the experience you had, sounds awful. It is a fairly new restaurant (it was the middling Spanky's BBQ until recently) so they may have been working out the kinks. How was the char on the patty? And no they didn't know who I was, I never announce myself when reviewing.

for $8? that thing looks PERFECT. i'm there man. Great review and pictures.
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
I had a great meal at Minetta a few weeks ago, the burger was so good we ordered a 2nd one at the end of the meal. For the price-point naysayers, it's definitely worth it. I've never tasted anything quite like it.
Video: Burger of the Month Club on 'The Today Show'
Wow, those guys are d-bags. But at least one part of that sweet club seems accurate, they do seem like bottoms.
Video: Burger of the Month Club on 'The Today Show'
Watching a bunch of trader trash judging medium to well done burgers with bacon on them is a joke.
Video: Burger of the Month Club on 'The Today Show'
While I agree that medium rare is the only way to order a burger, let's remember that taste, by definition, is subjective.
Video: Burger of the Month Club on 'The Today Show'
these guys don't know anything about hamburgers. their inattention to everything is a disgrace to the very hamburgers that they're eating. and the cows. any idiot with a publicist can get featured on the today show. but these seven fools have struck the hamburger chord that lies near to my heart. so check out my hamburger blog at

long live the hamburger.
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
i am currently on holiday in nyc and i was told by several friends and posts that i would be difficult to get into minettas at the moment , anyway i walked in last night , sat at the Bar and ordered the black label , medium rare ..
i havent eaten a burger more perfect than this , ever !! everything was in perfect balance , initially i thought there where too many fries on the plate , but that was not the case .. damn it was good .. plus the house pickle was delicious too .
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
Charcoal flame, gas flame, any flame cooked burgers just end up tasting like smoke. Yuck. Griddle all the way.
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
@Burger Bob The butter is drizzled on it during the cooking, not after. You do not taste it. Secondly the Black Label is designed for griddle cooking, the superior method for burger preparation.
Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger
Sounds pretty good, but
first, I wouldn't want butter 'drizzled' on it, second, it would surely taste better if cooked over charcoal flame instead of frying on a griddle.
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
@Summerfield, that's what I do, but anymore I try not to reference it here as people get bent out of shape about that. Gawd, this place has changed ...
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
@samjung23: One cannot take anyone seriously who uses terms like "blue collar chic", "limousine liberal", and "normal people". They don't have much to do with food, really. By the way, that's quite a feat, you having eaten at every burger joint in the world. My advice to you, Flounder, is to stop wasting your time becoming insulted. Be the burger, Danny.
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
@LunaPierCook: My advice to you is to start drinking heavily. No, seriously, start your own food blog. You've obviously identified a void that needs to be filled. Granted, it'll mean a lot of eating...
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
@Summerfield, I have the book, won it here on SE actually. I like it, and we reference it on occasion for trips. Still, I wasn't talking about the book ... I was talking about SE itself. It ends up being more than refreshing if anything outside the major cities is covered. But really, they only cover major cities because mainstream media does the same.
For example, in the reporting on the Hot Dog Hootenany they mention Koegel hot dogs and that they're on the Detroit coney. They never mention the Flint coney, which is the only one Koegel's is used on (the Detroits use other brands), and the similar-but-different Jackson coney is unheard of unless you've been there. No one knows these things, these smaller places, because they're assumed to not be interesting.
There is so much more out there that deserves regular attention. Frankly, I'd like to see it.
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
Blimpy Burger is the most overrated burger joint in the world. Couple that with the attitude(the guy must have been in a good mood when I came by, but he was still a jerk), and I have no reason to patronize the place. I'll go places where the help are happy to see you and the food is good, yet reasonably priced.
The only people that like Blimpy Burger are the ones that probably thought wearing trucker caps were cool back in the day. What was it that trend was called, "blue collar chic?" How insulting.
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
@LunaPierCook: I guess it must be the economy draggging everyone down. I understand. I have good days and bad days. My post was clearly humorous. Sorry you missed it. Motz hit Miller's in Dearborn and some place on Lake Michigan in SW Michigan, so that's not Ann Arbor and it's not Detoit. He didn't hit Dan's Tavern in Saline or Stiver's near Chelsea, but I'm not complaining. You should write him and give him some suggestions. He has a website.
@samjung23: There's no such thing as a "limousine liberal", and I have serious doubts about "normal people". You need a bigger sample than "a couple of normal people", maybe a fat-pig drug-addled radio talk show host, for example. They have burgers at Dinersty?
Hamburger America: Krazy Jim's Blimpy Burger in Ann Arbor, Michigan
I asked a couple normal people, and most said Blimpy Burger was horribly overrated. When they went to school there, they ate at the place once and just never came back. My brother told me he used to walk all the way down Liberty for Dinersty all the time, and I told him I did the exact same thing.
The only people that like places like Blimpy Burger are the limousine liberal yuppies that think they're eating like normal people when they go there. I can go to Tony's if I want to get junk like that.
