Time for a Drink: Tom Collins
We love this classic cocktail ! You're right, what a great cocktail to close out summer! Recently, we made a blackberry version of the Tom Collins and it was a hit at our parties. http://whiteonricecouple.com/blog/?p=291
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast, Pulasans and Rambutans
wow, I've had plenty of rambutans but never these pulasans! How pretty they are. At first glance, they looked like a cross between a lychee and rambutan. Now I know, thanks for the great pictures and information. They do look so cute and cuddly!
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: Dried Dragon Eyes Kick Raisin Ass
We are totally indulging in longans right now, along with lychees, mangosteens and jackfruit.
There's an ongoing battle between my dad and I. He has a longan tree, I have a lychee tree and we are always debating over which one is better.
I actually like both very much, but since I only have room for one tree, it's fun to take the lychee side! Food fights are awesome!

Alien Fruits and Vegetables
The kiwano melon is very, very cool. Can't wait to get my hands on it one day to try.
My most exotic fruit taste to date would have to be the noni fruit that I had in Mexico and some sour, tart fruits of a special palm tree from Viet-Nam. My mom calls it the Vietnamese "strawberry".
If I could add another exotic one, it would be the spiny cherimoya. It's a variety of cherimoya in South East Asia that is very large, rough and spiny looking on the outside. But on the inside, it is very much like a cherimoya, but very tart. We mash it in a cup, add sugar, ice and water and make a shake out of it!

Wow, this looks amazing and really special. I'm so jealous of anyone eating morels right now! :)
Photo of the Day: Portuguese Egg Tarts
These are wickedly good! I had something similar at the Asian bakery the other day and had to limit myself to just 3!
Sunday Brunch: Asparagus in Bed
This sounds like a breakfast we had last month. The only difference is that we topped this with bechemel sauce....yum! We'll check out the cookbook too!
Here was our Sunday Breakfast...

What is your best low-calorie recipe?
I am a total believer of eating fresh springrolls (salad rolls, summer rolls etc...) ! It has all the protein, grains, greens and flavor you need for a low calorie meal. You can fill it with all your fresh veggies, meats/tofu and have tons of flavor with fresh, light dips. Eating this for just a few days will keep you going and even drop a few pounds!
Every roll can be different, giving you variety and satisfaction beyond the basic salads! I've got so many recipes, it's crazy.
I'll even personalize a weekly menu for you. Just let me know what your favorite ingredients are and I'll even create some special dips just for you!
E-mail me or visit me via my blog!
Happy Spring Rolling to you!

Top Ten Crazy Asian Pizza Crusts

Top Ten Crazy Asian Pizza Crusts
I loveeeeee the sweet potato mousse on the pizza... oh man the shrimp crusts were really good too.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
I've had that Kiwano melon. I found the taste to be a cross between a cucumber and a banana.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
Funny Durian story: My husband works for the airport here in Atlanta, and one day there was a curiously heinous smell being reported in one of the terminals, and it was so pungent and offensive that he received several complaint calls from workers and travelers alike...they had no idea what the source of the stank was and some even worried that something had died and was rotting in the walls or that some sort of chemical had been deployed. The police and TSA were called in to investigate (in case of foul play or terrorist activity). After several minutes and much ado, an older gentleman was discovered sitting in the corner, happily slurping on his Durian.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
Durian completely freaks me out now that I've tried it twice. I was hoping the first time was a fluke, but the second time confirmed it - I can't eat durian.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
Another durian person here. My vegan friend at work came back from NY with a whole durian and brought some in for us to try. I only had a little bit, but that was more than enough.
Ours wasn't so bad...okay, the smell was bad, but the taste was equal parts onion and melon. Not overwhelmingly horrible.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
Durian for me. It smelled bad, to be sure, but it tasted ok. I agree with SuzeZeeQ that it was very custardy. I commented to my friends that it might be nice inside some kind of pastry. Some death-smelling pastry.
Later while watching Andrew Zimmern spit out a piece of Durian on TV
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
I've had that one in the picture! It's a kiwano melon?
I found it tasted like a cucumber but more sweet and sour.
Interesting...I might use it in a salad next time I guess.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
The oddest fruit I had was durian. I was lucky enough to find a fresh whole sample and got to crack it open myself. I think it was a little old, though, because it was rather dry on the inside. The flavor was nice, but I have issues with the texture. My gag reflex kicks in horribly due to things my throat does not believe should slide down easily.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
apple custard..yum..its custardy and appley...but too many seeds!
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
guanabana from costa rica... Or water apple.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
@pthom The photo is of a kiwano melon.
@ Stephanie The US embargo on mangosteens was lifted last spring.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
umm.... I don't eat alien food! If it looks too weird, you probably can't get me to eat it, especially fruit. It took me the longest time to try kiwi and I'm still not that fond of it. Give me an apple or orange any day.
Alien Fruits and Vegetables
The most exotic is probably rambutan - I lived in Kuala Lumpur as a kid. I actually like mangosteen better but it seems less "exotic" since I've been reading about people buying it in Canada. Does the US embargo it for some reason? Does anyone know?
Time for a Drink: Tom Collins
Tom Collins is my favourite drink and has been for some time ... again, I too get funny looks as a twenty-something gal. But then again I've been known to order campari as well ...
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast, Pulasans and Rambutans
Franciesmom: Ooh, check out the canned version first -- it's a lot closer to the original and yums =)
karlamei: Pulasans can be hard to find and a fair bit pricier than the rambutan, so you're lucky!
randomeater: You're right, which is a shame... I tend to gorge myself on these when I'm back home in Asia =p
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: Dried Dragon Eyes Kick Raisin Ass
fuuchan: I'm with you! There's a whole wide world of fruit that have been ignored by chefs for too long... But I'm thinking that maybe it's because bottled lychee essences and syrups are readily available in bakery stores, but I've yet to see a longan equivalent for people who can't get hold of the fresh fruit?
On a tangent, another fruit -- the Japanese yuzu -- is everywhere, yet I see no trace of the fragrant kumquat! I was in Hong Kong this week and tried the most amazing kumquat pastries and jellies. I can only hope I'll be seeing it on menus soon...
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: Dried Dragon Eyes Kick Raisin Ass
Agh!! Finally...the lychee's shadowed cousin gets some attention!
There's lychee martinis, lychee sorbet, lychee lychee lychee on haut menus all over, but the lowly longan...no attention. Until now!
Seriously, this fruit is what I wait for summers for. Screw lychee, bring on the longan.
And I was just plotting a blog post about longan season being upon us, too!
Snapshots from Asia: Tropical Fruit Feast: Dried Dragon Eyes Kick Raisin Ass
johnnytakes5: They call small seeds in lychees "chicken tongues"... I wonder if the same applies to small-seeded longans?
White on Rice Couple: I LOVE jackfruit! I've been trying to get a pic of the massive green fruit -- in its entirety -- for SE. And I'd love to have neighbors like you and your dad ;)

Photo of the Day: Portuguese Egg Tarts
This looks delicious. I found a few recipes online (thank goodness for frozen puff pastry!) and I will attempt to make them this weekend.
I have to say, SeriousEats.com, you are contributing to my fat-butt problem.
Photo of the Day: Portuguese Egg Tarts
oooh. for some strange reason, my regular dim sum place in provy only bakes 2 dozen of these every weekend. patrons sacrifice their weekend sleep-ins to place their orders (no phone reservations), so imagine how annoyed i was when a friend's snotty girlfriend "wasted" one by taking a bite, making a face, and pronouncing it "too eggy." we've not invited her since. there's nothing worse than seeing someone's sour face as you try to enjoy a yummy weekend brunch!
