As a kid, what were your first kitchen chores?

My earliest memory of kitchen chores was helping my Mom at Christmas when she made her butter cookies. I enjoyed rolling out the dough and using the cookie cutters. Thinking back I marvel at my mother's patience with me as I took a loooooong time to do everything. I am sure that my "help" made the job take 3 times longer...at least!

Stupid food myths.

Hmmm....in light of the prior posts, this seems a bit weak, but my Dad told me virtually any food I didn't like would put hair on my chest. This turned out to be a myth, and a pretty stupid one at that.

Gas vs. Charcoal Grilling: Where Do You Stand?

I use gas for the convenience factor, but have a Weber kettle I use when time permits. I see daryn mentioned a wood fired pizza oven, and I too have been looking at plans for making a pizza/bread oven in the yard.

Beef Jerky? white trash or actually good?

I like it when I go hiking or fishing. I take some on long car trips as well.

Search the internet and you'll find people he harrassed and cyber stalked for years and years. He is an interesting guy, but doesn't seem to know when enough is enough. This isn't battle, it is discussion.

I had some problems signing in when you switched to new format, which I love. I cleared my cookies and temp files and was then able to sign in. Not sure if anyone has had such an issue, but this may be worth a try if you did.

Isabella's Oven: One Great Pizza on a Saturday Night

Sounds like a must hit place. I am glad you handled the "snobby food critic" comment so well, thereby proving that you in fact are not a snobby food critic. (such a person would have stormed off...entourage in tow!)

Donating your time

Lilartist- Not sure if your comment was directed at me, but I did write I was not looking for a pat on the back. I started doing this because it seemed like the right thing to do, but complaints and antipathy turned into a bit of a demotivator.

From Talk

Donating your time

When I helping run a catering business a few years back we began bringing left-overs, (and encouraging our clients to let us do so) to various shelters around our city. I am not talking about plate scrapings...but trays of the same food people were paying a good amount of money for, that simply didn't get used. As we continued this practice people got to know me and our truck and would come out looking for us. The receivers of the food began to complain..."another tray of fruit"..."you brought paella last time" . At the point where it seemed we were getting far more complaints than thank you I decided I'd rather throw the food in the trash than go through the trouble of making an extra trip only to get berated for not donating what people wanted or expected. At least the rats were happy.

Not the heart warming story you were probably looking for, but it was my sad experience. I wasn't looking for a pat on the back, or a huge thank you, but I wasn't expecting to go away feeling like a fool.

Has Barbecue Gone Upscale?

What I meant was that part of the lure of a BBQ is a certain atmosphere. Eating BBQ in a 4 star setting, with elegant plates and linens isn't going to appeal to most people. I think what most people think of as a BBQ is the opposite of what they think of when they think "chic".

I spent some time in the west Carolina area, but prefer the thinner, less tomato based East Carolina style. Heck, I'd even eat that in a "chic" place!

From Serious Eats

Rebecca Charles is Mad as Hell and She's Not Going to Take It Anymore

I don't know much about legal matters, so I believe others when they say this case has no legal merit, but I am confused by people who compare this situation to one where you have restaurants with similar concepts in different cities that are 100's or thousands of miles apart. These places are a mile apart and almost look they could be part of the same chain.

From Serious Eats

Has Barbecue Gone Upscale?

As anything gets more popular there will be some evolution and change, but I am still happy that there are more BBQ options in NY. They may not be the same as the places I have visited in the Carolinas, TN, TX, or other parts of the country, but they are still good.

I find it disappointing how hard it is to find good East Carolina style BBQ anywhere outside of the Carolina's as I don't get there often. I would risk some changes to the original formula if I could find some closer to home.

The costs of bringing good BBQ to NY are high, so a higher price seems natural. I don't know if it is an attempt to make things "chic", or just someone cashing in on high demand. I'm not sure that people are prepared for, or want "chic" BBQ.

From Serious Eats

Rebecca Charles is Mad as Hell and She's Not Going to Take It Anymore

It is sad people have so little integrity that they would copy an original concept so blatantly. I wish Rebecca Charles the best in fighting this wrong.

From Talk

"competitive eating"

One could stretch the "warped" view and stretch it to fit many areas of life. Is it "warped" we here discuss the luxury of eating as an adventure when people are starving? Is it warped we spend money attending movies or the theatre when people are homeless? Is it warped to have a lot of clothes when others are cold? One can use this logic to make anything seem "warped".

I don't find it all that entertaining to watch people eat, but in my opinion the way most of us live in the non-third world doesn't really make us fit to register an objection on moral grounds.

Tap Water Is All the Rage

Now is the time for New Yorkers to save their money by drinking tap water! I just started a bottle refilling network called Tap It to give NYC residents a real alternative to buying bottled water when they're on the go. Cafes provide clean water and can be found by using the iphone application or the Tap It web site.

Ostrich jerky, pineapple jerky, even bacon jerky!

Tap Water Is All the Rage

I used to live in the city and drank distilled water all the time. The chlorine and flouride in the municipal water system made me very sick. I constantly had rashes and intestinal issues. Then came the whole house filter to remove chlorine and junk. AHHH. Nothing like taking a shower and not having to pour room temperature distalled water over you to rinse off the chlorine. Nothing like a safe shower.

If I lived in the city? I would get another filter system.

Now? Thank God, I have my own well. Delightful!

From Serious Eats

Tap Water Is All the Rage

I come from Indonesia, where drinking bottled water is a necessity. The water we get is not drinkable, and it has to be boiled first to be able to drink from it. Even then if you can afford it it's better to buy. I dont get why people who have the luxury of being able to drink straight from the tap and dont have to worry about the hygiene of the water, would still buy bottled water when it's so clear that you're being charged just for the fancy packaging. I mean could you really taste the difference between French or Swiss or wherever the water supposedly came from, if it's not written in the label?

From Talk

Question of the Day: How clean obsessed are you?

At home, I'm a little clean obsessed, but I am indeed a very messy cook. I consider messy and dirty two totally different issues. Now if you leave the mess sit and don't clean it up in a timely manner, it then becomes filth, in my estimation.

We dine out alot, so at some point I force myself to become oblivious to small things or I would be dining at home much more frequently. My first observation at the table is generally that of the silverware. If they are not immaculate, I ask for new. Next is the glassware, which is very obvious if not spotless and free of any gunk. It has always been my contention that the mark of a good restaurant is the cleanliness and tidiness of the restrooms. If they don't care that there is a layer of fuzzy fur on their plastic flowers and wet paper towels are overflowing onto the floor then they are not apt to pay attention to detail elsewhere either. It never occurred to me to accidentally walk into the kitchen, but that is a great idea.

This thread brings to memory very bad experiences at TGI McFunster's. Repeated, heinous experiences. I used to live fairly close to one, and it was one of the more "upscale" restaurants in the area. haha... Nonetheless, dining companions were constantly insisting on the place for convenience. One time, I found a plastic wheel from some sort of kitchen implement in my spring roll. When I complained, to their credit, they did ask if I would prefer some cottage cheese or applesauce. Then another time I ordered a BLT and the B was raw, never having seen the inside of a skillet. This is the biggie - another time I ordered a shrimp cocktail and pulled a piece of raw chicken out of the bowl. When I complained, they offered to bring me another app, so while I was waiting, (watching my companions enjoy their food and the servers go in and out of the kitchen), I could see the servers sitting on the food prep counters in the kitchen. Three of them SITTING on the counters!!! Why don't people notice that the food there tastes like a_ _?

From Talk

Question of the Day: How clean obsessed are you?

In perspective; eating bad food may give you a case of the runs in the short term, but over-eating good food will terminate you in the long run.

From Talk

Question of the Day: How clean obsessed are you?

Yeah, it's worth the risk. I've gotten sick once or twice, but that is bound to happen. One time it was from a local pizzeria that I've frequented for years, and another time it was from chicken teriyaki prepared at home by a relative. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. I believe regardless of how careful I am, food poisoning is just something that happens from time to time.

Of course, if I see something that doesn't look or smell right, you can be sure I won't be putting it in my mouth.

From Talk

Question of the Day: How clean obsessed are you?

You don't need to be clean-obsessed to have a problem with Di Fara. OK, he makes pizza bare handed. But he also makes change bare handed, and then uses the same hands to sprinkle freshly cut (and presumably unwashed) basil and extra cheese on the pie, after it comes out of the oven.
Everything you can see in the visible prep area looks dirty, and the walls of the restaurant have dust so thick it looks like fur wallpaper.
Feeling brave, I ordered anyway, 3 days later, no evidence of intestinal disorder. The pizza is good, $20 for a not very large pie, but anyone using the same ingredients with a thin crust could match it. Why reward a restaurant that is compulsively unsanitary?

Pupster, I'm so sorry you had mediocre pizza at Isabella's. Adam K. and I also had lousy pizza there two weekends ago. We posted about it on our pizza tour post. The good pie man, Luigi, has gone back to Italy. The current pieman is nothing special, as you and I found out recently.

From Slice

Isabella's Oven: One Great Pizza on a Saturday Night

Lousy. We had expectations after the rave from Levine. Now I know his opinion can't be trusted. We ordered multiple pizzas, and there were serious issues with crust and sauce. Ingredients were just so-so. On par with any neighborhood slice joints. Not even close to being among the top 10 in the city..

I'll take the cheese over chocolate any day! I love chocolate, but there is nothing like cheese, besides I could always replace it with cheesecake. wink

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

I like chocolate and all, but I'd give it up in a heartbeat if it meant I couldn't have cheese. Chocolate I like; Cheese I LOVE.

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

Omg, how can you ask me to choose between cheese and chocolate?! I suppose I would choose cheese though. Can live without chocolates (can't believe I'm writing this), but I can't live without nice cheesy stuff every now and then.

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

Chocolate - poof gone. Although I do have an occasional weakness for REALLY good dark chocolate. The chocolate that is so dark that light itself can not escape. Of course you can only eat centimeter by centimeter squares of the stuff at a time... so I guess it wouldn't be too bad to give it up.

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

Hmmm. Can't choose. Cheese is a daily staple, from the mild to the wild and gooey. While chocolate may not be everyday... none for a year? No way! Sorry if this doesn't help your survey.

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

I'm allergic to chocolate, so I already gave it up.

Just so all the chocolate lovers know, there is a threat of chocolate going extinct. Because of it's global semi-addictive popularity, the need for the plants to grow in very particular soil and atmospheric conditions, that only exists in very limited places on the planet, and it's being overfarmed it could go bye-bye in our life time since the nutrients are being unsustainably depleted.

From Talk

Would you rather give up chocolate or cheese?

This reminds me of a conversation starter I'd bring up over cheese fondue in college.
Would you give up beer or cheese?
Unfortunately, missing the point, the first person to respond said "Oh, well, I could always drink whiskey, or wine, blah, blah, blah..." It skewed the results of my survey. From that moment on, beer was simply a conveyance for alcohol, and not multi-faceted beverage with as many complex, flavorful incarnations as cheese.
That said, as divine as a chunk of dark, after dinner chocolate may be, I could never give up cheese.
...or beer.
