Merry Ethiopian Christmas

Funny, I just made Ethiopian last night... it is so easy around here (I live in Arlington) to find good quality ingredients if you want to give it a try. I love making it, but we do go out to eat in the U street corridior... my man's favorite is the raw special Kitfo at Etete. I am going to have to check that bakery out.

Great Gelato. Not Ice Cream. In the U.S. Where? Whose?

I third Dolcezza. I think last summer I had siux different pints in rotation... the lemon and opal basil sorbetto was incredible, and I must embarrasingly admit to having consumed an entire mixed pint of the Toigo Orchards pear and dark chocolate. The stomach ache was profound, but worth it.

Where should I eat in Charlottesville?

I totally second your recommendation for the Main Street Market. My boyfriend and I live in Arlington, and when we recently visited C-ville we were so surprized by this little foodie mecca. And please, don't dare skip the chocolate shop. It is totally awesome.... I think we may have to make the 3 hour drive for a day trip :)
The city is also surrounded by vineyards, so we usually hit a few when we go :)

Voluptuous Veg and Prurient Protein

Oh those Mega Whole Foods are really one of my favorite places to shop. We just got one out in the DC area about 6 months ago, and I love the place. The wine bar alone is worth the drive. That and my boyfrined likes to play w/ the giant emu eggs :)

ChristineB -- I was about to say Cafe Istria too! I just love it. My college dorm is only a block away. All of their baked goods are great too.

I third Capogiro -- I actually went there tonight. It's incredible.

I haven't been impressed with Dolcezza at all. The Gelato Bar in the National Gallery of Art was surprisingly good, though. Maybe my expectations of Dolcezza were just too high.

Frost Gelateria in Tucson, AZ is pretty good.

I had pretty good gelato at the Espresso & Gelato Bar in the National Gallery of Art (East Building) in Washington, DC. They offer 16 flavors of gelato and a full espresso bar.

Merry Ethiopian Christmas

one of the things i miss most about madison wi since my move to greensboro nc is my favorite ethiopian restaurant – buraka. it seems that there are no ethiopian eateries left in the nc. both of the places in chapel hill and durham closed and i can’t find mention of any others, anywhere. i am simply drooling with food lust and envy over all the options in dc. 5 hours is a bit of drive for lunch and i haven't been brave enough to try and make any of the dishes myself... yet...

I wholeheartedly second Capogiro in Philly. Made fresh daily and absolutely delicious! In fact, our weather is unseasonably warm today and I think I might swing by on my way home for some. I can't wait!!

There are places that serve gelato on practically every corner in Little Italy of San Francisco, so you could keep trying until you find something authentic. I've never had 'real' gelato before, but I enjoy gelato when I can. There is even a pizza restaurant in downtown Stockton, CA that serves pretty good gelato!
And to flood: I'll have to try that place in Eugene, Ore., next time I'm up there!

Merry Ethiopian Christmas

Oh man, VioletHeather, Robyn and I just had that exact dish when she was in town a couple weekends ago!

Totally agreed about the markets, there are so many with quality Ethiopian spices and dried goods. I like Habesha Market at 1919 9th Street, NW. What's your favorite?

Merry Ethiopian Christmas

After baking one of Dorie Greenspan's recipes for spicy applesauce bars as a present, I learned the hard way that Ethiopian Christians fast until the day they celebrate Christmas which is January 8 this year, I believe--after the 12th day (Epiphany) of Christmas for the non-Orthodox. No eggs. No dairy. It sounds as if the first of these two diaspora-creatiions conforms to dietary restrictions, the second, well, it's sort of like frying latkes in bacon fat, and may signal a loosening of tradition unless it's geared primarily to Western customers.

I went to school and worked in C'ville for a bit. Greenberry's for coffee is a local favorite (and their tea selection is impressive too). I agree with others about Continental Divide, Bodo's, Albemarle Baking, Bashir's and definitely a gusburger at White Spot. I recall a Blue Moon Diner close to the Downtown Mall which had good ole fashioned delicious dishes. And if you like BBQ, go to Big Jim's BBQ on route 29. It's unabashed, Nascar-loving, Virginia BBQ. Not sure if it's changed since last time I was in C'ville was about 7 years ago. But you can't go wrong if you stay in the Downtown Mall and have limited time.
