Top Ten 'Hamburgers That Matter for New York City'

I strongly disagree with the inclusion of BLT Burger. I do agree that they are overstacked, but further, I can't say they are at all tasty or enjoyable to eat. They are forgettable.

I would like to highlight Zaitzeff - whose busty, super-juicy patties on a buttery Portuguese muffin runs serious (or onion rings) around BLT any day.

I also cannot stand Molly's - they're too big, and too tasteless - I actually wrote about this not too long ago:

http://www.ubereater.com/2009/01/mollys-shebeen-shoulda-been-betterthan.html

All in all a solid list, but Veselka, BLT and Molly's gotta go...

Best bagels in West Village?

Hudson Bagels are solid, and give Murray's a run for their money, but overall, there are no bagels in the West Village.

Best Bagels in the Northeast-- Sam's (formerly Stein's) in West Caldwell, NJ. Hands Down.

Josh Ozersky on 'Nightline': 'Fancy Burgers Are Cheaper Than Pizza'

I agree with Josh in this instance. Pizza in NY has quietly and stealthily creeped its way out of the "cheap and satisfying" realm, to rather boldly nudge itself into the world of "kind of expensive and often disappointing (if you're not paying attention" world. I'm not saying there isn't great pie to be had in the city, and with true value involved at that, but generally speaking, a large pie at the city's most respectable pizzeria's is going run you at least $20 bucks.

So all that being said, a $10.95 burger that leaves you filled, smiling, and ready to relax packs far more value than 8 slices of a garlic pie that you ate with your eyes closed.

And with THAT said, I need to get to City Burgers stat to check it out.

Also, I was recently reminded of this pizza predicament last weekend when I got a sausage pie at Luzzo's in the East Village. We had a large pie, and a salad to split, and it was $40 bucks. No drinks, no nothing.

You'd have to be an idiot not to send it back.

I never understood people who felt "bad" about sending it back. You ordered rare, you got medium, send it back.

In Videos: How Are Hot Dogs Made? Find Out (If You Dare)

I agree about the comments regarding the natural casings. The snap of the external casing, that gives way to juicy salty, meaty goodness is rivaled by no other. It really is out of this world.

Rutt's Hut in Clifton, NJ is one of my favorite spots for "rippers". I grew up eating them and they are nice and crunchy. Max's in Long Branch is probably THE best dog you can get your hands on. The snap on those babies is just too good to be true. But it is true.

Gepperths is a wonderful place owned by wonderful people. Agreed.

My favorite breakfast is Lula Cafe up in Lincoln Square- food is great. service can be touch and go, but if you're out for a slow Sunday brunch, no big deal, have a cocktail, it's the weekend :) expect a wait, and don't be surprised by all of the too cool for themselves hipsters.

Lou Mitchell's is just ok- but gives fresh donuts on the weekend as you wait and milk duds to kids

John's Pizzeria, a Familiar Taste

i went to john's last night after reading so much about it all over the internet. I was utterly dissapointed. the pizza was below average by a huge margin. the crust was as plain as cardboard. the tomato sauce tasted like nothing (which is the case with bad canned brands) the ricotta and mozzarella tasted like nothing and the meatball was bland as well. even the onions were kind of tasteless which leads me to the conclusion that he probably got really bad ingredients from his providers recently or jus has bad providers. big dissapointment

Charcoal flame, gas flame, any flame cooked burgers just end up tasting like smoke. Yuck. Griddle all the way.

From A Hamburger Today

Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger

@Burger Bob The butter is drizzled on it during the cooking, not after. You do not taste it. Secondly the Black Label is designed for griddle cooking, the superior method for burger preparation.

From A Hamburger Today

Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger

Sounds pretty good, but
first, I wouldn't want butter 'drizzled' on it, second, it would surely taste better if cooked over charcoal flame instead of frying on a griddle.

I, too, had a VERY BLAND burger at the CORNER BISTRO..
and I DID take mine out in that brown PAPER BAG !
The place is so tiny, nowhere hardly to stand, much less sit, so I took it out, and ate it on a nearby sidewalk...

I found the burger VERY mediocre!
And I like your comparison , when you said that one can still tell a supermodel looks like a supermodel even on her worst day!

Papatzul: Under the Radar and Underappreciated

I've been to NY with my with about a week ago (April 2009). I was so disappointed, I decided that when I come back I should post a note so that other people would be weary of this restaurant.
I have to say the service was good, the food turned out to be the problem. I ordered the duck enchiladas and my wife ordered a vegetarian course. It was greasy, drooling with disgusting sauce and had little resemblance to duck meat in any form (dead or alive). The basic theme repeated in my wife dish as well, to many ingredients with undefined taste.
Bottom line, I truly and honestly recommend to skip this place.

From A Hamburger Today

Is just the $90 ribeye worth every penny?

From A Hamburger Today

Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger

@BPstyler Please show me where I said anything about the price being justified. I happen to think it is but I don't see how you could have garnered that from the piece. And the photos do not tell the whole story, not even close. Take for example the beef blend - can you really deduce that the patty has dry aged beef by looking at it? How about the bread - does the picture reveal that the brioche has extra butter and salt to over come the inherent sweetness of the bread? I got paid to write the story alright - by Serious Eats. As for your spurious and frankly tasteless comments about "blowing" - I will leave them alone except to note that you obviously have an oral fixation.

From A Hamburger Today

Secrets of Minetta Tavern's Black Label Burger

Great photos -- they tell the whole story. Looks delicious. To say it is worth every penny at $26, the excessive fawning and obligatory positive adjectives...ummm...yeah....how much did they pay to write this story? Did you blow them or did they blow you? Some photo captions would have done just fine.
