What was the one meal your mother made when you were little that you absolutely hated?

What is it with the liver and onions? I believe it was thought to add "iron" to the diet, but, oh my, it was cooked to the consistency of an old shoe and it just tasted evil. Another staple in my mother's rotation was corned beef and cabbage -- in Boston, it was referred to as a "boiled dinner," which was accurate. Still can't stand the smell of boiled cabbage (which used to waft out of every Blarney Stone in NYC when you walked by).

where's a good place to buy pork belly?

I've bought it at Deluxe Food Market, 79 Elizabeth Street, in Chinatown. The two Fuschia Dunlop Chinese cookbooks have some excellent recipes for it.

Question of the Day: Mayonnaise, Miracle Whip, or a soy alternative?

I actually prefer Kraft to Hellman's--maybe it has a touch of lemon? My late aunt, who actually attended Miss Fanny Farmer's School of Boston Cookery in the 1920s, maintained that Miracle Whip was a descendant (and poor relation at that) to something called "boiled dressing."

Question of the Day: What's the worst meal someone's ever cooked for you?

Over-the-hill, spoiled lamb chops, cooked by my sainted mother-in-law, with a toxic melange of spices, wines, anything and everything she had to attempt to disguise that they were rotten. On top of that, she actually claimed that she had used Julia Childs' recipe to make them taste like wild boar. She never lived that one down.
