Triumph of the New At Rowdy Red Wine & Burger Bar In Los Angeles
wow.. that is REALLY new. only open for a week. I'm often weak for "being first" - think The Fix burger, I was there on 2nd day of opening, ICK. Almost made it to Rowdy on opening day, but decided to stay home and make a spinach salad instead...

That's just a lovely article... And it has all of my burger maxims! No ketchup, eat it ASAP, and somehow a plain white bun should be just enough.
That shack reminds me of Mom's Burger in Compton, CA, still 1 of the greatest 'hood burger in all of LA. That said, looks like Mom's still superior vs. Bill's, they form their own patties.

The Bowery in LA also serves a burger on toasted muffin. The problem is it's always a bit over-toasted, hence always ask for it LIGHTLY toasted for the perfect texture/absorbency...

A Great Burger from a Taco Stand at Yuca's in Los Feliz

Can AHT send a blogger to Mom's in Compton already? Please? FWIW, get the Soul Cheese turkey... easy on the salt.

I've had the burger here and it's definitely better than the average burger. It's also reasonably priced for the quality you get.
Ditto on parking at the LAPL across the street. If you have a library card (free) then it's $1 parking for one hour, then $4 more dollars for the second hour. Just eat and get out in an hour and you're good to go.

Get a library card for the LA Public Library across the street from the Rowdy location. LAPL validates for parking with a LAPL card and it brings the parking charge WAY down

I like the size of your post, Damon.

Ooo I loved this review. I will probably never have the opportunity to go there, so being able to read such a vivid description makes my mouth water!!
I kinda wish there was somewhere local to get such great burgers!

Yo Damon. I tried to go here but couldn't find it or parking, and headed back to the 110 freeway.

If you don't enjoy a meaty tale about something you love, you probably don't really love it. (Or you're just peeved you didn't get to it first.) Keep telling me pretty stories, Damon.

I'm nowhere near LA, but I always read your reviews for the narratives.

lol@the "salad" ontop of the burger. ridiculous!

For real, get to the point in about eight less paragraphs. You can put them in your diary if you like.

Another good downtown find Damon. As I stay in downtown when I visit LA (see you in March BTW!) it is always good to know that there is a decent burger about. I know that subterranean mall intimately - I use the gym in there, which I may have to spend a little more time at after your recommendation. Burgersseker is right about the Apple Pan's lettuce, you will find the same thing at Pie n Burger. it is just one of the infinite LA burger variations.

Would it make you laugh to think that you have quickly become an arbiter of all things burger for me? I'm way guilty of falling into the food/music/art blog vortex and have to remind myself from time to time to lift my head up for the air of what exactly it is I am interested in consuming. And (paradoxically I suppose) with your posts, I'm often most interested in the words that you, ahem, serve up. Not words that somehow legitimize a burger or my knowledge of a certain burgers existence, but words that incite my curiosity of place. Maybe it's easy to say that because it will eventually be washed down (I'll stop) with a tasty (medium-rare, american, hold the mustard, pickle and raw onion) burger, but anyone can throw up a macro image and say some good and some bad about a place and the food it serves. It's your narrative that keeps me tuning in. Rock on.

Why was it "really good"? (channeling my old English teacher's remarks on my writing skills) "SHOW, DON'T TELL" The burger looked pretty average to me . . .
Jk

The dealbreaker is the aioli. Nothing remotely mayo based anywhere near my burger.

I sort of dig English muffin burgers. They can be a nice break from the usual. Wish I would have remembered this review and/or check our own damn site before visiting SF last week. :(
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
Wow...I lived in the Valley for 30 years and in Van Nuys for 9 years...really close to Bill's and I also drove by it and never noticed it. Next trip back to the Valley (I live on the East Coast now) I will definitely check it out. I appreciate a fresh perspective on the LA burger scene. Keep up the good work!
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
Nice post. Wish I'd known about that place when I first went out there and the streets were still dirt....wait, I'm not really that old...but it was a long time ago :) Look forward to your future posts.

I first started going to Bill's in 1974 when I was driving a catering truck in Van Nuys. I sold them from my truck and always had to make sure I had enough every day for lunch. Bill has made the best burgers in Van Nuys as far back as I can remember.
You should try his chili burger (open faced) it is great. I would order one for myself when I was picking up the order for my catering truck.
Very nice review.

God I love burgers, we have something here in the UK called burger sauce - do you have it there? It tastes like a mix of mayo, mustard (heaven forfend!) and ketchup, quite nice actually!
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
Looks like another must-try burger to add to my list. Will definitely find my way there next time I'm in the Valley!

if you could have only one burger in LA, where would you go?
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
I thought mayo was mostly there to keep the burger from soaking the bottom bun, you know fat repels fat? At least that's what I heard from Alton Brown.

not a bad post. though i had nominated another person to fill the LA burger correspondent position at hamburger today (a legendary burger reviewer from another blog/social site), and wished that he had been selected, i can't deny that the person chosen posted a rock-solid entry that was both whimsical and near-scientific in its approach and execution. living in the part of the country where the burger as we know it today exploded as a part of american pop culture (southern california), i'm glad that hamburger today finally has a designated correspondent (albeit one raised in... horror of horrors!!! new york city). best of luck with your future postings...
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
Great post - I can't wait to try Bill's. Do you have an recommendations for a good burger red wine pairing?
The Bill's Hamburgers Experience in Van Nuys, California
Damon, great post. I'm with you on the ketchup. One wonder's if Bill's antipathy to ketchup is general or hamburger-specific--if it is not for a hamburger, what DOES he put it on?
