Stumptown Coffee: Let's Call a Spade A Spade Here

Stumptown tastes like it is "flavored" coffee because it has flavors you don't necessarily get in other blended coffees -- or in the case of Starbucks or Peet's, seriously over-roasted coffees.
Try some of those single source, heirloom Ethiopian varietals (I know, I am sick of the overuse of the word "heirloom" too). Those coffees will absolutely blow your mind. The flavor profiles are more like wine than the muddied burnt brews you normally taste.

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

A couple times a year after a dinner party, I have to go online and find the other chocolate haters. I try to be conveniently be away from the table when dessert (invariably chocolate) is served. Yet, they hunt me down and try to force it on me. Finally, I relent. "Really, I'll pass. I don't like chocolate." "YOU DON'T LIKE CHOCOLATE?!" And then everyone starts talking about chocolate! For me, it's like they are talking about eating slugs. I despise chocolate. I find myself getting more and more sick to my stomach. It IS curious to me that there are people (lots of them) who love chocolate, and sometimes I kind of wish I could have that orgasmic chocolate experience that people talk about. But then the chocolate..slugs ..chocolate...slugs...bleech part of my brain takes over and I nix that wish.

Stumptown Coffee: Let's Call a Spade A Spade Here

I gotta hand it to BiltonNY....Intelligencia is really good at least the location in Silver Lake. The barista made a heart with the foam for my latte, which is something most baristas can't or don't try to do. It's not necessarily the best I've had, but considering most of the crap out there, it's really good. There's a pretty good gelato place across the street if that also interests you. Sorry I don't remember the name.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

I don't hate chocolate, but neither do I love or crave it. Not much of a sweet tooth, I guess.

Someone told me once that people either have a salt or sweet preference that was inherently genetic. I don't know if that is true, but I'd definitely hit the salty stuff before the sweet stuff. Whatever.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

I'll only eat dark chocolate. I like to think its a texture thing as well as having a flavor and aroma as complex and interesting as coffee or wine.

And we know how people can love their coffee or wine.

I hate milk chocolate anything.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

Oh I am with you on this! I cannot stand chocolate! The smell makes me want to retch, I think it smells like dirty socks. The taste is an abomination! Trust me if I ever find a Genie to grant me wishes, I'm totally asking him to eradicate the public nuisance that is chocolate.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

I have never liked chocolate, don't crave it, never think about it, and always steer clear of it if offered for dessert. Eating or drinking anything with chocolate in it never enters my thought process. I don't understand people who like it. I guess I'm un-American because I can't stand
pumpkin pie, apple pie, licorice, root beer, or liver. Chocolate is at the top of that list however. We all have likes and dislikes and shouldn't be judged by what we don't like. I have a friend who detests spaghetti and mashed potatoes. I don't judge her for it. That's what makes us unique as individuals. Give me a dessert with lemon, strawberries or a lot of vanilla, and I'm in seventh heaven!

The Absinthe Backlash Begins

Unbelievable! Finally an article with a list of absinthe that is actually good brands. Nouvelle Orleans, Pacifique, La Clandestine and Mansinthe are some of my favorites! If anyone is interested, there is also a nice list of reviews at Absinthe-Review.com

The Absinthe Backlash Begins

Paul, as you know, Joana attended your session at Tales of the Cocktail last year and found it both informative and engaging. Since then I've tried about 10 different absinthes and find Marteau among the best -in-class and I'm anxious to get my hands on Clandestine and Pacifique should they make their way to anywhere near here.

The backlash hasn't started here in any form in OK because, well, there's a very low awareness of what absinthe is and how it can be used so please continue to share your expertise and knowledge on the subject and evangelizing on what makes a proper absinthe and how it should be used.

As for the marketing side, I couldn't agree more. Steve Raye and BAT handle online writers and bloggers with respect and give the work that goes into writing such as yours its due. Others, however, see fit to use deceptive and degrading tactics to promote their brands. I hope everyone will consider the quality of such a brand before grabbing it off the shelf if they need to resort to such measures. "authentic absinthe" indeed...

Well you should try Le Tourment Vert its supposed to be the most authentic absinthe with the green color and everything. My favorite part is using the spoon and sugar cube! Haha

@chuckbass--Thanks for the 411 on the updated flavors--I so wanted to try the salty pistachio soft serve..maybe the graham cracker or the choclate malt..The salty pistachio got rave reviews by many. I wonder why is was discontinued? :o(

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

Yep, I hate it too... thankfully I don't have a sweet tooth though, so I don't suffer.

I can tolerate it, if I have to, but like a couple of other people said, the darker the chocolate, the more I dislike it.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

@ hungrychristel - I'm glad I'm not alone, I too get the over the top responses like your director trying to publicly shame me. I find myself trying not to mention my dislike of chocolate if at all possible just to avoid these situations :)

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

I'm so happy someone says this!
I was actually tempted to start this thread but was swayed by the fear of being scrutinized by all my SeriousFriends?

In the office I get poked-fun at because I don't like chocolate or ice cream.
My director will yell loudly "WHO ELSE HERE DOESN'T LIKE CHOCOLATE?" then look at me and say "see Christel, you're weird!". @Martini Me - I get the other responses too [all of them].

But HEY! s'all-good. I'll have a butterfinger once a month (you know what I mean girls) when it calls my name but other than that? no thanks.

From Talk

What Should I Eat at Momofuku's Bakery/Milk Bar?

The cookies are not to be missed. In order of must-eat to only-if-your-belly-has-the-room:

Blueberry cream
Cornflake marshmallow chocolate chip
Snickerdoodle
Banana
Compost
Peanut butter
Corn
Double chocolate

And maybe take home a slice of three-layer cake (dulce de leche, perhaps) and crack pie for later.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

Yes! Yes! Yes! Finally! I am not alone! When people find out I hate chocolate it causes this huge uproar. "You hate CHOCOLATE" they always gasp. "Why??!" Ugh, the conversation then proceeds with me explaining why and then one of three scenarios plays out. 1) I wish I hated chocolate. 2) You're weird. 3) When was the last time you had it? You should try it again. You should try _______ brand of chocolate I bet you'd like it. I'll bring you some chocolate everyone likes.

BAH HUMBUG I say.

From Talk

I Hate Chocolate -- Anyone Else?

Not a fan of milk chocolate, but will happily eat Dark.
DH does not like chocolate at all.

From Talk

What Should I Eat at Momofuku's Bakery/Milk Bar?

I have to admit, I wasn't a bit fan of the pistachio soft serve, but it seems like a "YAY/meh" type of thing so you should at least sample it (they give generous soft serve samples). I really like the cornflake marshmallow pretzel cookie, the pistachio cake, and the VOLCANO, the huge ass bread bun filled with cheese, potato, and porky goodness. I'm also a fan of the candy bar pie.

From Talk

What Should I Eat at Momofuku's Bakery/Milk Bar?

For the love of all that is holy, please don't leave without at least trying the salty pistachio soft serve. Although salty/sweet isn't to everyone's liking, I thought it was amazing (and am very thankful I don't live in the neighborhood...it could be a problem). The grapefruit/chewy pineapple combo is addictive, too.
