Serious Beer: Now in Cans

Wow, you tried an awful lot of beer for this post! I admire your selflessness in the line of duty! :D

Eat for Eight Bucks: Lentil Soup

Mmmm, lentil soup! Lentils are so often looked down on, but I think they're utterly wonderful!

The Perfect Jelly Doughnut

I remember when I was a lad (I grew up in the UK where jam doughnuts are the norm and ring doughnuts are a bit odd), there was this bakery my mum would take me to occasionally.

Their fresh jam doughnuts were literally sent straight from heaven!

I have never tasted better, and probably never will again. Your post reminds me of that heavenly bakery, thank you!

Homemade Hanukkah Gelt

Wow, those are simply gorgeous! What a brilliant idea!

Photo of the Day: Periodic Table of Cupcakes

Fantastic!

I love how there's an empty case where element 113 would be! Quick, someone hurry up and discover it!

How Do You Survive with One Oven on Thanksgiving?

Days in advance (well, today), I sit down and work out a battle plan. With military precision I work out exactly what's going to be where when (and how hot it'll be).

If I remember rightly, last year I even managed to schedule "glasses of wine" for myself, interspersed throughout the cooking period!

Taste Test: Finding the Best Apples for Baking

I'm surprised that Gala did so well, I shall have to try that.

Back in the UK I used to use Cox's Orange Pippins (they're apples despite confusingly containing the word "orange" in their name!) for baking, but I haven't seen them here.

Pumpkin Pie Alternatives for Thanksgiving

I think I'd definitely go down the pecan pie route. Not sure why, but it feels as though that would fit a pumpkin pie shaped hole quite well.

That's seriously impressive!

And weird.

Deeply, deeply weird

Gerrit's Satellite Wafers: Cute Packaging, But Tastes Disgusting

Do you know anything about the history of these things? I've been wanting to write a post on them for my blog forever, but no one seems to know anything about them.

As far as I can tell, they originated in the UK before coming to the USA. But other than that, I know nothing.

Well, except that they're disgusting!

Dinner Tonight: Patty Melt

Excellent post. I sometimes forget about the patty melt: it's a totally perfectly balanced classic. Much better than the traditional "burger in a bun". It's the rye bread that does it.

On the subject of 'eggs or no eggs', my dad always uses egg to bind his burgers but I don't generally add egg to mine, so I've extensive experience of both sides of the argument. Imho, it definitely helps keep them together and it doesn't really affect the taste, but I do feel it affects the texture slightly--it can make them a little too mushy.
