Gadgets: The Aebelskiver Pan

Welcome and thank you for this article! I've been wanting a takoyaki maker so sometime now, but could not justify it's single usage to my husband. This offered me a cheaper option and shows many sound uses for it! And he's now excited about it!! I order one from Amazon and cannot wait till it arrives.

Meat Lite: Chickpea, Chicken, and Tabouli Salad

I was trying to find a new recipe for a potluck BBQ this weekend--I think this is it. I love that most of what I need is in my garden!

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

Olive oil by the teaspoon. Weird yes I know, but good olive oil is just so good by its self.
cream cheese from the tub, sea salt, and sauerkraut.
They are all just so good. :)

Gooey Butter cake? sounds interesting. Where is that from?

I will probably end up waiting till the fall for the sausage making, it is waaay too hot out now.
I'll probably be pulling out the ice cream maker for the Kitchen aid and doing something with that.
Interestingly enough my In-laws are into making a turduken for thanksgiving this year. It started out as a joke last year, but now they're really into it. So that may be interesting.

Thanks Everyone! No intentions of spamming! If any mods see this and think it is spamming please email before pulling it, so I know and let me know hoe to fix it.

Enough said about that. Let's talk about the cooking! Anybody ready to start this thing? What is everyone thinking about cooking first?
I just made a jar of infused garlic rosemary oil (with rosemary from my garden). I used it last night to make a chicken and broccoli pasta for dinner. Yum!
I think that I may make ice cream next. A few years ago I got a ice cream maker attachment for my kitchen aid which I have used once. There has been some very tasty recipes of Ice cream on simplyrecipes.com especially a blueberry frozen yogurt.
I've also been thinking about making my own sausage, but I think I need to wait till my summer classes are over, to do that. That will be an all day project.

So what about everyone else?

I can clear some things up. I thought that posting a list of 100 items was too much for a board post, thats why I linked to my blog. I tried to pick items many of which most people wouldn't cook, with out being prompted. Some of them are crazy, like the turduken. This is not a required list, it's just a challenge, no need to cook everything on it. Just like the listing of roadkill on the omnivores 100. I'm not too sure most people will be trying that.
@sammie: which site does it shut down? My blog?
I hope that clears up anyting, if the link still doesnt work please let me know, heres the regular link to my blog, http://theindecisiveeater.blogspot.com/

Where to buy craft/exotic beers?

The Whole Foods In Bowery has a great beer room. An extensive bottle selection, and about 10 taps (I think around 10) which you can buy a growler full of. Plus frequent tastings. I always find something new there.

Gadgets: The Aebelskiver Pan

I got my aebleskiver pan for ten bux in an after-Christmas sale at Rite Aid a few years ago.

I don't bother with fillings. I just cook cornbread batter and serve with butter and syrup. Sybaritic!

I'm most comfortable with something about as thick as a quick-bread batter.

TeriN- my mother uses her cast iron pan on her black ceramic stove top & it works great!
We are very excited about our 9-hole cast iron pan! We are curently putting the finishing touches on it with a local foundry here In Minneapolis. We're hoping Mr. Aebleskiver will have them available on his site too!
So glad to see so many families still enjoying aebleskiver!

Glad I could help, Indecisive Eater!

Meem, there's a recipe linked in the article above, to the right. There's a batter recipe, which is certainly worth trying, though when I'm lazy, Bisquick works well too. (It may not be from scratch, but you could never tell, and it's a whole lot cheaper than the Williams Sonoma mix!)

Gadgets: The Aebelskiver Pan

I got one for Christmas but haven't broken it out yet. Does anyone have a good basic recipe to start? I don't want to resort to that mix at Williams Sonoma.

Gadgets: The Aebelskiver Pan

I got mine from Amazon for very little money and it's cast iron. The pans from TV are flimsy. The pan usually comes with a small cookbook.

The pancake puffs are delicious and about as much fun as they say. I stuffed a couple with Nutella and thought my friends were going to carry me around on their shoulders.

From Talk

What's the quickest snack from home instead of junk food?

CRACKERS and ALLOUETTE
I find the store-bought peanut butter crackers and cheese crackers too salty, so I make cheese and cracker sandwiches with my favorite cracker and ALOUETTE herb cheese spread.

TRAIL MIX
I don't love the usual G.O.R.P (granola, raisins and peanuts) so I buy chocolate covered cranberries, pecans, dried pineapple, and cinnamon or valinna granola. Candied nuts make a great addition too.

PEANUT BUTTER and APPLE, CARROTS, or CELERY

CANDIED or SPICED NUTS
There are some great recipies at cooks.com and epicurious.com

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

ShawnaAdora had it right...and I guess we're the only ones....

MIRACLE WHIP right from the jar! I eat it sprinkled with black pepper. If I feel fancy, I spread it on crackers!
Cold Chef Boyardee ravioli's from the can ( a childhood vice)
Peanut butter
Eagle Brand milk
Garlic stuffed olives captured with a fork

From Recipes

Meat Lite: Chickpea, Chicken, and Tabouli Salad

@Trilby This could really be due to using chickpeas that are simply not very good. I find the ones from Trader Joe's and the Goya brands are really good.

From Talk

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

@Traveller - you MUST have been upset. I can't imagine eating a jar of grainy mustard by itself! No, capers would be my choice, I love em.

BTW, congratulations on getting that dissertation over and to an old broad like myself, a "B" sounds pretty damned good.

From Recipes

Meat Lite: Chickpea, Chicken, and Tabouli Salad

Let the chicken breasts cool -- at least part way -- in their cooking liquid. If you pull them out still hot, they'll shed all their liquid and get dry and yucky. Also, remember to keep the water truly below the boiling point -- 212 degrees. Poached chicken is yummy. Boiled chicken is not.

From Talk

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

Peanut Butter; Olives; Pickles; Baked Beans; Chef Boyardee; Condensed Soup; Vegetables; Ice Cream; & Almost anything that doesn't require removal from the container for cooking. If it's cooked or sufficiently prepared in the container, I'll eat it right from said container.

From Recipes

Meat Lite: Chickpea, Chicken, and Tabouli Salad

I would like to advocate lots and lots of curly parsley in tabouli. Lots of parsley = classic tabouli, no matter what else you mix in. Middle Eastern recipes seem like the last to go down the "fusion" road, but I'm ready for that garlicy, & lemony avalanche!

From Recipes

Meat Lite: Chickpea, Chicken, and Tabouli Salad

I always put chickpeas in my tabouli! I'm so happy to find others who complete the protein this way. I also sprinkle on some feta if I need more calcium in my food that day.

I make it with different grains. My current favorite is the Kashi pilaf mix. That packs in lots of goodness and flavor. Here's my version.

I also learned about the lettuce a few years ago and like the cool, crisp flavor and texture.

I love to eat my own canned whole tomato's a quart size, right out of the jar. Reminds me of my mom and grandma and the farm in Ohio, great comfort and memory food for me. coco

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

When my sister & I went backpacking around Europe we were on a VERY limited budget... many times we arrived by bus in our next foriegn city, late at night, hungry & unfamiliar. I remember eating peas & corn cold out of the can after shopping at the 24-hour food mart in Barcelona... Dining on red wine & dark chocolate and jumping on the beds in our Paris hotel room... Eating Brie out of the package with a Swiss Army knife... Popping Pringles & chugging Fruitopia at 6am after a night of dancing & drinking in London...

Definately pints of icecream, gelato, sorbet, etc, many nights watching movies with my best friend, or doing a late-night "icecream run" with my sister & splitting a litre of Oreo...

I used to bake peanut butter cookies & eat them out of the pan

Pickles, pickled beets, pickled onions, relish, sauerkraut, olives, salsa, pasta sauce, condensed tomato soup, curried spinach, mushy peas, pie filling, peanut butter, jam, whipped topping, salad dressing, eggless mayonnaise, ketchup, bbq sauce... and yes, margarine...

PS I'm totally underweight, so I can justify eating an "entire" anything, including bags of cookies, a McCain cake, a frozen cream pie :)

From Talk

I eat ______ out of the tin/jar/bottle...

@dixisue, I like pb & mayo sandwiches, no matter what kind of breat I have, also occasionally add a few slices of ripe banana on that...if out of pb, sit there with banana slices on a plate, each one gets a small blobette of mayo, also good this way on a Ritz cracker.

otherwise, out of can or jar it's:
tuna, drained or undrained
Bush's beans, or B&M, best tasting IMO
Spag/MB from the can, so easy now with the zip-off tops!
uncondensed cream of broccoli or cream of chicken soup
HAVE to taste at least 2 tbl of any new jar spaghetti sauce
herring in cream sauce, or just plain pickled w/onions
sardines, in hot sauce, mustard or oil
salmon from a can, also love to drink the "juice"
pickles from a jar
