Thanks for all the great suggestions! I'll check out Mesa Grill (and most of the other places - sound so tasty).

I've made the vegetarian version, but you can substitute real meat. It is hot, but not too hot...

I would not patronize this place. The waitstaff at the door were rude and would not even let us enter the bar (rather than saying there was a long wait and asking if we wanted to put our name down we were rudely informed that it wasn't happening tonight. At 10pm). It would be fine to say you are full, but the attitude and rudeness are not required. Needless to say, I am never returning.

I made a turkey chili and despite 4 Tbs. chili powder, it wasn't spicy enough! I think my pasta and sweet ingredients absorbed all my spice but feel free to omit them if you're interested in the recipe.

My standard (making it tomorrow as a matter of fact)
Saute til soft - Butter, onions, celery, green pepper, jalapeno
Add ground beef or venison and brown
Add a couple Tbsp of taco seasoning and a pinch of cinnamon
Add your favorite beans
Add tomatoes, fresh or canned
Add tomato juice or V8
Simmer to blend flavors
If it's not hot enough from the jalapenos, add crushed red pepper or cayenne pepper
If you like the smoky flavor - add a little chopped chipotle with adobo sauce
Always a hit!!

Use flank steak and slather it in a little adobo sauce before cooking. That'll knock up the heat factor a bit. Super hot chili calls for chopping up some of the chipotle peppers and adding it to the main pot.

Add a jar of Pace medium salsa to your recipe.

Recipe Request: Chili

1 chopped onion
as much garlic as you feel like chopping, 1 head should do it
1 T whole cumin seeds, toasted then crushed
3 T standard chili powder blend
1/2 t chipotle chili powder (You can add more later if you want more heat)
1 T oregano
1# ground beef
1 bottle of Shiner beer (it's made in Shiner, TX but, I suppose any ole beer will do
1 can plain diced tomatoes
1# cooked pinto beans that you cooked the day before, seasoned with garlic, salt and pepper

Brown the meat in a heavy bottomed stock pot along with the onions. Add some salt to help bring out the juices and soften the onions. When the meat starts to get some good color, add everything but the beans and tomatoes. Heat, stirring occasionally, until the garlic becomes really fragrant, the onions are soft and the meat is nicely browned. Taste the meat for seasoning and adjust as necessary. Add the beer and stir. Add the tomatoes and the beans, along with their cooking liquid. Add enough water so that the liquid is 2-3 inches above the rest of the ingredients. Bring to a slow boil, reduce heat and simmer 1-2 hours, tasting occasionally. If you find you want more heat, add more chipotle in very small increments, alittle goes a long way. Serve with shredded cheese, sour cream and maybe some Fritos.

Alaina, I had the Myla Breckenridge, which was really crazy, in a good way. I never thought the smoky peatyness of scotch would match so interestingly with the anise of the absinthe. The lime juice helped to brighten it all up. I also had a Sleepy Hollow Fizz, rum, lemon juice, maple syrup, pumpkin puree and an egg yolk. Delicious, tasted like pumpkin pie in a glass. I will definitely be going back, the menu is wildly intriguing, filled with exotic stuff, and the food looked good too. It is damn expensive though, so to be reserved for a special treat.

@Telaviv: I was there on the early side, but I could definitely sense the 'tude, and could see how it would be a shitshow during peak hours. I wouldn't want to be there or attempt to get in during prime time. It was nice and quiet when I got there (7ish) and was getting louder and filling up by the time I left. The guy at the door was a jackass, but not more so than the majority of places with some degree of notoriety.

It received rave reviews from family and friends.

Recipe Request: Chili

This is my standard recipe:

2 lbs. lean ground sirloin
1 large onion, chopped
4 cloves garlic, chopped
1 red bell pepper, chopped
1 green bell pepper, chopped
1 jalapeno, seeded and minced
2 1/2T ancho chili powder
1T cumin
1 1/2 t oregano (use epazote if you have it)
1t cinnamon
1 28 oz. can crushed tomatoes
1 12 oz. bottle of light beer
1 cup water or stock

Saute the ground meat until no longer pink and drain off the fat. Add the onions and peppers and saute until softened, then add the garlic and saute for 1-2 minutes more. Add the chili powder, cumin, oregano, and cinnamon, and saute 1-2 minutes, or until fragrant. Deglaze with the crushed tomatoes, then add the beer and water or stock. Simmer for about 45 minutes, covered, then uncover and simmer for 15-20 minutes, or until slightly thickened. Serve over rice, with lots of sour cream, chopped onion, and chopped tomato.

This recipe suites my (mild) taste, but you can leave the seeds in the jalapeno to bump up the heat a little bit. It's easy to throw together, and it's a big recipe that leaves lots of leftovers!

Koreatown NYC Restaurant - Suitable for Vegetarian

I don't know if your carnivore friend would like the idea of of going to a vegetarian restaurant but FYI, there's a vegetarian restaurant called, Hangawi on 32nd st. between 5th and Madison. Very tasty but pricey.

I love Kang Suh on 32nd and 6th Ave. I almost always get the Gopdol Bibimbap (hot stone bowl) with egg and tofu, but no beef. The banchan (little side dishes) are all vegetarian (& seafood) and super delicious!
You won't be disappointed!
Also, there's HanGawi, which is completely vegetarian Korean food and a beautiful atmosphere to boot. But I still think the food at Kang Suh is better.

i can second mandoo bar - the vegetarian bibimbap there is pretty good, and they've got some ok dumplings too. but i've never had a problem at korean restaurants getting tofu or just veggies in place of the meat.
