Sugar Rush: Malted Milk Cake at Momofuku Milk Bar
Is their most insane treat yet? I will have to sample for myself and find out...
Sugar Rush: Caramel Marshmallows at Vosges Haut-Chocolat
Did anyone else live for Scooter Pies when they were little??
This is the gourmet adult version...
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
City Bakery will always own a piece of my heart. But they suffer from major inconsistency.
But Petrossian, there's a whopper that never disappoints.

The Dessert Files: A First Look at Pichet Ong's 'Spot'
Pichet does amazing things with Ovaltine.
Kathy, thanks for sharing.... can't wait, can't wait, can't wait for a cupcake!

Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
La Esquina certainly fits the romantic and trendy bill. But there's attitude to go with it. Mercadito on Avenue B is dark and romantic and just as delicious. (Mexicana Mama on 13th isn't so romantic, but it's good Mexican!)
What's Your Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie?
Ah, I love that this debate never gets old.
Levain's walnut chocolate chip, followed closely by Momofuku's cornflake marshmallow chocolate chip, followed by Petrossian's ridiculously large and gooey walnut chocolate chip.
Celebratory Break-Up Dinner
Go to Balthazar. It's fun, lively, has a fantastic menu (all price points, delicious, too) and just feels celebratory.
(Otherwise, my vote goes to Public - also a really fun atmosphere and a really memorable menu. Plus, if you want to keep drinking afterwards, you can hit up the Monday Room.)
Cheers!
Sugar Rush: Financier's Fig Tart
Sigh. Marzipan? Caramel? Figs? It sounds, and looks, utterly delicious.
Sliders in the City?
Lobster roll sliders at Stanton Social!
Sugar Rush: Pumpkin Ice Cream at Sundaes & Cones
Yum. What's not to like?! It's like pie a la mode, served in a sugar cone!
NYC Bakeries field trip
Oh MrsJohnson, you are in for a treat.
Cupcakes: Butter Lane, Chikalicious Dessert Club, Sugar Sweet Sunshine
Cookies: Momofuku Milk Bar, Levain, City Bakery
Chocolate: Bespoke Chocolates, Kee's, Jacques Torres
Doughnuts: Doughnut Plant
Scone's: Alice's Tea Cup
There's also Three Tarts in Chelsea, which is wonderful. The Chelsea Market is home to several great bakeries. Feel free to click through to my site to find all kinds of delicious options. And have fun!
Sugar Rush: Pumpkin Trifle Pudding at Sugar Sweet Sunshine
Good point - a good reason to rejoice! It's the season of pumpkin bread, pumpkin ice cream, pumpkin custard, pumpkin scones, pumpkin cupcakes, pumpkin pie...
The Brunch Dish: Cherry Vanilla French Toast at Kitchenette
Seriously—I am weeping right now, knowing I can't have brunch there until I'm back in NY in December. To the top of the list, Kitchenette goes!
Sugar Rush: The Smith's Smith'wich
That's so funny, Kathy... I've been walking by The Smith, resisting the pull of this humble little sign for two weeks now. Maybe today will be the day I indulge.
New York Restaurant Cookbooks
I love the Balthazar cookbook.
And many bakeries have great cookbooks: Baked, BabyCakes, Amy's Bread, The Sweet Spot, Payard...
Dining alone in NYC
Eat at Hearth in the East Village. There are four seats that look into the kitchen - inspiring and fun to watch, and absolutely divine food. Ditto for Dell'Anima.
Balthazar - wonderful to sit back and enjoy the scene. I ate a late lunch there by myself once and was treated to a flute of champagne, on the house.
Blue Ribbon Bar is tiny and intimate, perfect for one. Little Owl, too.
Sugar Rush: Vegan Dougnuts by Babycakes
Pricey, yes, but maybe that's the way it should be. Doughnuts are a treat, not daily breakfast. When you fork over three bills for one, it makes you realize that you shouldn't do this every day. And that you should savor every little bite.
Bakery for Baguettes
The Union Square Greenmarket pulls in some great bakeries - I usually buy whole grain loaves, but give Bread Alone or Our Daily Bread a try.
Otherwise, I second Grandaisy, Amy's Bread and Balthazar. Or come to Paris!
Sugar Rush: New Cake Trio at ChikaLicious
Valhrona chocolate cake: a no brainer. Ditto on the strawberry shortcake. Has anyone sampled the green tea and Grand Marnier?? I think I might have to give it a try...
Sugar Rush: Blueberry Pie and New Soft-Serve Flavors at Momofuku Milk Bar
This is so cruel. I used to live around the corner from Momofuku. Now I live 3600 miles away. I want me a slice of blueberry pie.
Sugar Rush: Gingerbread at Two Little Red Hens
Gingerbread: bread, or cake??
Either way, delicious.
Sugar Rush: Pistachio Blueberry Turnover at Bouchon Bakery
Pistachio blueberry turnover?? Hel-lo, amazing!! This looks utterly divine.
Sugar Rush: Ice Cream at Jacques Torres
What about his ice cream sandwiches?? Made with his killer chocolate chip cookies, they're serious accomplishments...
Great Eats For Kids - Need Recs, Please
I second Shake Shack, Jacques Torres Chocolate Haven and Milk & Cookies.
Alice's Tea Cup has a couple different locations and is fun for both adults and kids.
You could try Pipa at ABC Home & Carpet - there's space, a funky interior and good, cheap food.
Also think about places with outdoor terraces.
Here's a link to an article I wrote that might be helpful:

Recs for Upper West Side eats?
Patisserie Margot is a wonderful little cafe and has the best almond croissant in the city.
Alice's Tea Cup has nice, fresh food for lunch.
And, a walnut chocolate chip cookie from Levain could be an incredibly memorable $3.75 meal!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Your mileage may vary on Pret. I went to the one on 42 and 5th today at 5:00. It was like a dried out biscuit. Very tough and hardly any chocolate. Truthfully, I'd rather eat dough from a tube.
The Dessert Files: A First Look at Pichet Ong's 'Spot'
Ovaltine...i feel soothed already.
The Dessert Files: A First Look at Pichet Ong's 'Spot'
I went on Friday with a friend ~ we had the Persimmon jasmine rice pudding [our verdict: delicious flavor & texture combo ] & the white miso semifreddo [our verdit: glad we tried it although we found it a tad to savory ] as well as a peanut butter cookie & a green tea chocolate cookie [verdict: we enjoyed the strong pb flavor nicely complemented by a sprinkling of sea salt on top; we found the green tea chocolate blah] ~ the best treat: watching Pichet Ong teaching his staff how to make & plate the deserts. It's a comfortable space even though it's subterranean and the staff is very welcoming even though they haven't quite got their sea legs.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Given that half the cookies in NYC seem to be baked below Union Sq, good luck!
I have no idea if it's the BEST, but you have to include Insomnia Cookies.
This bastion of cookies for the NYU crowd (and anyone else in a 3 mile radius), are delectable. And (I think) it's the only purveyor that does nothing BUT cookies. Whenever I brought them into work, it caused a scene like the bridal gown sale at Filene's.
Sugar Rush: Malted Milk Cake at Momofuku Milk Bar
Oh my god, I need to try this!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Ditto on Jack's. My daughter used to work there and couldn't get the recipe. Top secret. But I'm sure they have lots of coffee. I think they might actually contain ground coffee beans. Sometimes they're too raw (because the staff bakes them in a toaster oven and lack consistent timing) but they're usually very good. Jacques Torres is still the winner.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
When you get to the downtown edition, the chocolate chip cookies from Jack's Stir Brew coffee are a must-try. I go to the location on Front Street by the Seaport. They are crisp on the edges, have a ton of chocolate, are slightly underbaked to ensure a gooey center, and have a deep, almost, caramel-like, burnt suger / brown butter bass note to them. I keep begging the staff to give me the recipe, but rumor has it that only Jack's aunt knows the recipe. She makes the batter, delivers it to the store, and the staff only bakes off the cookies to keep the recipe secret.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
City Bakery's cookies aren't for the serious cookie lover. They're mealy, the chocolate isn't good, they're burnt and thin, there's really just not much to like about them.
FYI, Pret at Maiden Lane sold out of cookies this afternoon.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
I am eating a Pret cookie right now and it is good but needs some more salt. I think the success of this cookie resides on the fact it is in a heated case (though that doesn't explain that it is still good when it cools down after being brought to the SE office). CURSES! What have they done to this cooooooooooookie to make it good. And this thing is 300 calories too. I wish they hadn't told me.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Yeah, you know lately i've been noticing the city bakery cookie going downhill. Along with other things..the food is getting old and tired. I hear this place has dodgy management..As far as i've been able to tell lately, the rumors are proving true..coming to the surface in the form of an overpriced, overhyped, pretentious product. :(
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Mmmm... just had a Pret Cookie, lush chocolate and slightly soft dough. It is durned good. Just slightly sweet and a crisp "crust."
On to City Bakery!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
wow, lotta CB haters. i'm still a fan, maybe your burnt is my crunchy.
petrossian has a good one too though, i have to agree with that.
Sugar Rush: Caramel Marshmallows at Vosges Haut-Chocolat
omg. in a good way.
Sugar Rush: Caramel Marshmallows at Vosges Haut-Chocolat
As if I didn't love Vosges enough already.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Not to be too harsh but I always thought City Bakery Chocolate Chip cookies tasted like stinky feet smell.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
@hightemp: Interesting. For the record, ours came from 37th and 7th.
That's part of the reason we wanted a two-round taste test. If a cookie isn't consistent, multiple tastings put them at a disadvantage. The best cookie is not only fantastic on first tasting, but fantastic on a return visit. We'll see how Pret fares in the finals!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
SO... against my better judgement...but following your lead.... I went over to Pret today. There must me some location specific magic happening because the cookie I got tasted no better than the toll house cookie rolls you buy at Gristedes and cook at home....right down to the slightly artificial preservative taste.
I'm still waiting for Jacques Torres to show up (Outer Borough I guess) and Le Pain Quotidien.
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
Stone, this tasting is Midtown down to 14th street, I expect a Downtown installment soon!
Chocolate Chip Cookie Championship: The Midtown(ish) Edition
whoa this is a total scandal. i will have to try this pret cookie because i really can't believe that it would be particularly great.
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
i second Mercadito, also Mesa Coyocan in brooklyn - but if you want the same food in Manhattan - go to Barrio Chino - not much different and the chef used to work there. But Barrio Chino is pretty small and you might have to wait for a table.
A really underrated place is Palador on 34th street - it's really quality food and authentic and romantic.
Looking for a mexican restaurant in NYC.
zarela on 2nd avenue between 50th and 51st streets. It's a bit noisy downstairs at night (near the bar) but ask for a table upstairs near the window. cuisine is from oaxaca. amazing mole sauce. desserts to die for. great sangria and margaritas. sometimes zarela herself comes around and greets the guests.
What's Your Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie?
Birdbath (which, I guess is City Bakery) and Amy's Bread.
In any case, I'm actually partial to oatmeal or else an "everything" cookie.
Oh, also Bread Alone at Union Sq Green market.
What's Your Favorite Chocolate Chip Cookie?
Say it with Flour in Midtown East. Amazing!
Sugar Rush: Pumpkin Ice Cream at Sundaes & Cones
Oh man, i LOVE sundaes and cones! They're adorable, and they do lots of interesting flavors, which are usually surprisingly yummy. I want to try this one!

About:
Favorite foods: Chocolate and baked goods. (And cereal, sandwiches and cheese. And cherries—any berries, really. But mostly sweets.)
Last bite on earth: The folded, triangular part at the very end of a Parisian streetside crepe-maker's banana and nutella crepe. Mon dieu.

Pichet does amazing things with Ovaltine.
Kathy, thanks for sharing.... can't wait, can't wait, can't wait for a cupcake!
