How do you eat your sweet corn?
The cob itself isn't vertical, that would pretty funny to see actually. I eat it up and down around the cob and then move on instead of going across the cob.

Definitely, cantaloupes are notorious for being one of the dirtiest fruits out there and they are very difficult to clean because of their rough outer rind.

Those are tremendous achievements! I would love to learn more about coffee, but your tone seemed so condescending. Almost as if "us Americans" don't have the intellect to learn about what great coffee is...maybe that could be a new venture for you.
I do admit I was snarky with my comment, I apologize, and such a tone was not called for and beneath me.

I'm a vertical girl for the most part, only horizontal on occasion. And I wouldn't dream of putting anything on a perfect cob of sweet corn. If it needs butter or salt its not worth eating! :D

That would be fun for exactly one day then I think I would start to dread those CC pancakes! :D
'Nightline' Reveals Supposed Secrets of 'Iron Chef America'
What I would like to know is how the Challengers pick their Iron Chef. Do they really get their pick? Or is it just based on who is available or who makes for bigger ratings? I usually catch it 1-2 times a month and either Flay or Batali are at the helm. Am I missing all of Cora's episodes?
Espresso on Ice Is Not OK, and Other 'Restaurant Policies'
I'm not sure where I sit on this issue. I loathe thinking of a steak being cooked past medium rare, but my favorite cousin will not touch a steak unless it is well done. I would never not serve her a well-done steak.
But I am not a restaurant and cooking steaks does not earn me a living. So, I guess I'm leaning towards letting a business owner run his or her business in the manner they choose.

PB&J with chips - that's sounds so good in such a devilish way!
@Adam - So Burger Palace doesn't conjure up visions of gooey ball pits and kiddies running around with plastic superhero toys? :D

Original Lays was my chip of choice for sandwiches when I was grade school. I think a crunchy blue corn tortilla chip sounds great for a burger.
@Laryssa - I agree with you on the name, too fast-foodish, makes me think of Burger King...

I have had great success with Bittman's Simplest Bean Burgers and he has so many variations on the theme that you could go crazy with different combos.
I don't have access to How to Cook Everything Vegetarian, but I bet you could just google the recipe name and someone has posted it on a blog.
Photo of the Day: Fried Morels
This photo brings back memories. When I was growing up in Kansas my parents and I would go foraging for morels in our backyard woods. I remember my mother frying them once or twice, but most of the time she would just saute them with butter. They were heavenly!

In SO FL, where the Latino population is quite large, almost any sandwich you order from an authentic place has commercial potato sticks on it as a matter of course. This is NOT true for the traditional Cuban sandwich, but for pretty much any other kind you get potato sticks. Kobey's (sp?) is one popular store brand here, but the quality varies dramatically from can to can. Sometimes they are fresh and a tiny bit under-cooked, pale and tasty. Many times they are over-cooked and and darker and lose that fresh flavor for one that is slightly, well, flat with a distinct aftertaste. So, the burger-with-chips is not at all unheard of idea.

Good news as now the burgers can be cooked to order.

okay... i am 13 years old and swim quite a bit in fact... i swim for the CJACs, The Barracuddas, Driftwood, and Ranney School Swim Team, year long. i love training and even though i only way 87 lbs, i still eat about 4,000 calories a day. i am still training for the 2012 olympics because i have beaten 9 Junior Olympics records and gotten golds in every event i traine d for including the 100 Butterfly which takes a lot of calories to swim. Every night before practice you eat tons and tons of emty calories... but you get used to it!!!

Even though this place is only a few minutes from our house we have made other choices for our burgers.
$7.50+ for just a burger is pretty steep compared to other places in the area. Add in a side and a drink and it totals to $12+.
The burgers itself are pretty good. I had the Crunchburger and my wife had the Palace Classic. I like my burgers medium rare and as covered above it was not possible. The burgers had a nice char/crunch on the patty and the buns were nice and soft. The fries were ok and the onion rings were decent. The shakes were nothing spectacular.
What bothered me was that there were seperate windows and cooks for the sides, shake, and burgers. We watched our onion ring and fries sit on the counter while waiting for our burgers. Our shake had the longest wait and was a goopy mess when it came with everything else.
American Roadside Burgers in Smithtown was a cheaper bet with burgers a notch below.

kudos to Jeffrey stepping in there ... couldn't agree more on this ONE sweet spot that Food Network has cornered for themselves, amidst a host of culinary travesties (e.g. Simply Estupido, even Alton won't acknowledge the existance of Rachel Ray)

Come on people, the reason 'empty calories' and 'junk food' are normally a bad thing is that, when you eat them, you're not usefully contributing to the key elements of a balanced diet, so you will end up needing to consume more food in order to get the recommended daily allowances to keep your body running in good condition.
If you live in a third world country such as India, much of your diet consists of the empty calories in white rice, and you'll probably end up with the diseases and early deaths that malnutrition brings. At the other extreme, the likely result in a Westerner is that you'll be eating more calories than you're burning, so you'll put on weight.
Once in shape, swimmers generally don't have a huge mass of muscle to build or maintain, so their requirements for proteins, vitamins, and so on are only 1-2 times those of 'normal' people [ref]. But they have a massively larger need for calories (i.e. 4-5 times), and of course the easiest way to get that massive dose of additional calories is through 'empty calories' - lots of fats and sugars.
If he were to keep the same diet once he stops swimming competitively he'd be breaking scales not records!

Another reason not to use pre-cut melons: when you put the leftover pieces (if any) in a container for later use, the rind from one slice will invariably touch the slice next to it.
It may sound weird to those of you who insist on NOT washing, but it absolutely isn't weird. Check out any of the YouTube videos re lemons and bacteria and you will immediately be washing every piece of fruit or vegetable in your fridge.
I agree, soap is probably not necessary, but that veggie wash or the water/vinegar combo will work well.

Certainly Mr. Phelps should cause those in the nutrition left to think critically about their eat healthy be healthy mantra. There are many in the 20 something age group who eat whatever whenever without any discernable health malady. Sure Olympic atheletes are more active than the average person but are they super healthier? Do they live longer? Are they 100% disease free? Are there 200 year old former atheletes hanging out that I am unaware of?
The nutrition fact that is often missed is that all foods fit into a "healthy" diet, even chocolate chips pancakes and ham sandwiches on white. Those who villify certain foods labeling them as "junk" are fishing in an empty pond and are never able to reel in real evidence.
My nutrition advice to Mike, stick to the diet you are on for it is the "Right Nutrition".

I have heard that soap can leave a residue. I always use this veggie wash spray - it does the trick (you should see the color of the water after I wash strawberries with this stuff!). http://www.veggie-wash.com/ I put my produce in a bowl, spray on a bit of the wash, run some water in the bowl and agitate for a minute or so, then rinse several times until the water is clear.

Oh yeah and Phelps at 6'4", wearing size 14 shoes (also used in the single kayak races later on) seems to use his calories efficiently, don't we think? as Right N points out, look at the results. And look at the man's body. Do you see an unhealthy man? He's not skinny, but he is stream-lined. He's able to swim 8 races in, what, 6 days? Breaking records (some of which he set) in every single race (one was only an olympic record, the other 7 were world records) some won thanks to 3 teammates. It does seem like lots of sugar and carbohydrates, but it clearly fuels his engine.
None of us can compare what we do and how we eat to the regimen of an elite athlete, no matter how active we are, can we? It's just flat out different for them.

Someone left a comment regarding the "empty calories" in the things Mr. Phelps was eating. Although the things he eats are not viewed as health food by the health gestapo they are far from empty calories. Just look at the results Mike is getting, he is a champion. Do a little more research next time.

I just think that super cute Phelps was going to be born a fish ...then at the end of the way... by mistake became human. :)

@FastFoodCritic: I wash bananas before peeling because whatever is on the banana skin would be transferred from my hands to the fruit. Next time you slice one into your cereal, consider how the banana travels from Ecuador, Costa Rica, Colombia, Honduras, the Philippines, Panama, or Guatemala (see http://www.banana.com/farming.html) to your market, and what dreck the fruit has collected on its way. Blech!

i never wash anything. im just kind of gross like that. i think im slightly hydrophobic.
Do You Wash Melons Before You Eat Them?
Of course I wash melons before I eat them. The knife goes through the skin and carries whatever was on the skin onto the flesh.
Do You Wash Melons Before You Eat Them?
I don't know why soap, unless it's antibacterial, would help. But I do rinse everything well with water - less to get rid of foodborne illness risk (which, as spinach taught us, rinsing won't take care of), than to wash off pesticide residue (for non-organic food) or other people's hands residue. The five seconds it takes to wash a melon, an avocado, or a lemon seems worthwhile - all three of these are generally cut through the rind before preparing, so obviously any dirt/residue is being drawn on the knife through the edible part. I have never washed a banana, though.
Do You Wash Melons Before You Eat Them?
Yes, I wash them, the knife is going through the outer rind that have been sitting in a bin at the market, where it's potentially been handled (not to mention the trip to market, passing through who knows what?). Takes a minute, insures my health.

I used to work as bike courier too...I survived on pastry and really messed up my health, but I didn't get fat. It can be hard to get enough calories when you're doing lots of exercise, especially if you want to eat healthy food (lean meat, vegies, whole grains) which takes a lot more time to eat for a given caloric amount.

You would have to have a very wide mouth, or the corn very short ears, to remove the kernals like a laser printer!

I've had corn just like the above mentioned. It looked crazy when the Mexican vendor was making it up on a stick, however my father said he'd had it before and it was great. He was right, it was absolutely fabulous!

I made the typewriter noise while eating corn with my 4 year old niece. Just to show you how much times have changed...she has no idea what a typewriter is. When I tried to explain it to her she said, "Oh! like my computer! Can it do noggin.com?" Anywho, she still thought the "ding!" was a hoot.

FYI: The average ear of corn has 800 kernels, always arranged in 16 rows. There is one piece of silk for each kernel.
