Do you eat a bed-time snack? What is it?

any and everything i can get my hands on, there is no restriction =D

From Serious Eats

What Are Your Recipe Deal Breakers?

the food processor definately.

that's the one and only that i can think of for the moment.
with frying, i tend to just guess the temperature it's at based on how much bubbling it does when i throw something like some batter in. works pretty well for me.

Cook the Book: 'My Last Supper'

My last meal would have to be with the one person that is most important to me on the beach ;). First course, Crab cakes(with some lobster in there just because) topped with a apple-mango chutney. Second Course, a very THICK steak of prime rib(no need to add anything else). And for dessert, Chocolate covered strawberries(i just love them)

It depends on the day. If it's a salty-craving day, I reach for some dill pickles. If it's a sweet-craving day, there's nothing better than chocolate milk, eaten with a spoon rather than drank straight out of the glass. Brings back all kinds of nostalgic memories.

Anything that requires me to visit more than 2 grocery stores is out. I'll make substitutes where I can, but I have a one-year old - time is a luxury I'd rather not spend grocery shopping.

I pretty much avoid most baking recipes, except for the simple things I grew up making, like cookies or biscuits. I do not make candy, cakes, or especially meringues. maybe someday when I am not living in a cramped apartment with an electric stove. That's pretty much it in terms of deal breakers; I will try most things at least once before giving up on the idea.

I never fall asleep early (that is, if I am asleep by 3 am, it's a good night for me), so if I eat at 7 pm (which is when we usually have supper), I may get really hungry by midnight - 1 am. I usually have some cheese and fruit or olives, maybe a glass of wine. If I happen to have some pistachio ice cream in the freezer, it's good too. It does vary though between sweet and savoury, and there's no telling which one I may crave on any particular night:-) Sometimes I may have weird cravings (Cluck-U wings, for example-:)), but most nights, the cheese and fruit/olive plate works for me.

Any type of left-over. Any baked item I have.

I think it's funny that so many of the reasons listed in the original post are recipes that are avoided because of not owning enough appliances. There are always ways around not having every appliance imaginable. David Lebovitz has instructions for making ice cream when you don't have an ice cream maker, most things that require a stand mixer can be done by hand with a teeny bit more elbow grease, similar to most things that require a food processor. All of these things were made long before most kitchens had a million appliances and gadgets. I say give it a try!

I once read a Martha recipe that called for Chardonnay twigs. Oh, I drew the line right quick.

Oh, I just saw one on Slashfood--'this easy bread starter only requires you to wait 14 hours'

I just downed a half-bottle of wine. Check with me tomorrow to see if I'm sorry. :-)

Sometimes I'll crave things in the late evening and other times I'm not interested at all. I suppose the most usual would be some sort of fruit or a scoop of ice cream.

If I've had a dessert after dinner I'm much less likely to want a snack later at night.

Whatever fruit I bought but didn't finish off earlier. However, tonight, it was half a doughnut, since my husband saw the "Happy National Doughnut Day" banner on the SE home page. He said we had to celebrate his favorite holiday.

i have to have a snack before i go to bed if i have gone to the gym that day and eaten my usual dinner of salad and vegetables. most nights it's a bowl of granola. in fact i think i need one right now.

I love a good, cold pasta salad. Cold olive oil and feta cheese is like my weakness.

A huge cup of coffee before bed (I am impervious to caffeine, I swear.) and a piece (or three) of biscotti is nice too.

As a kid I always had frozen juice (we made our own popsicles) or Grandma's hot chocolate (a chocolate bar melted, with cream added and cinnamon.)

I used to be able to eat and eat without gaining . . . .at my age I shouldn't do that anymore, but I also can't quit my bedtime snack routine. Give me anything chocolate, or ice cream, or that big box of frozen cream puffs that I bought for a baby shower and forgot to thaw for serving. (yeah, sure!). Um, lately, in an effort to cut out the full fat noshing, I have been buying frozen fruit bars and lemon sorbet. Makes me feel less full, and less guilty.

Lately for some reason it anything and everything, especially ice cream, candy, doritos, pistachios, cookies, no rhyme or reason really, just really yummy and really fattening............if I get up in the middle of the night (which is a lot) I HAVE to have oreos and milk, I've been doing that almost my whole life and I don't know why...

From Talk

Do you eat a bed-time snack? What is it?

Yea, unfortunately I do eat late a lot. I'm trying not to as much lately but I hate going to bed hungry. So usually I'll eat a late dessert (ice cream) or snack on whatever is on the counter...chocolate covered raisins or pretzels....hmm...

I don't like to eat heavy meals late in the evening, but if I'm up late watching a movie and get the munchies I usually go for my favorite... popcorn! Acutally I could eat popcorn 24/7 if I was able to.

I'm a single woman, so anytime I see a recipe that has a 'yield 48' unless it can be easily cut down (some sites allow you to do that) I'm not going to make it--yes, I know 'you can freeze things' but c'mon, who likes any one dish enough to have enough for 6 months of the same thing?

Heavy cream, more than 1 cup of oil in a small batch, unclear technique directions without illustrations, and gelatin.

I don't have a food processor, and I, too, am frustrated when recipes (I'm looking at you, Cook's Illustrated) don't offer alternatives to food processor instructions. Otherwise I won't deep-fry for reasons mentioned above (it is just one of those things I leave to restaurants - too messy), and anything with meat or highly-processed ingredients (e.g. tofu cream cheese, soy creamer, egg substitute, Crisco) is out as well. I only bake yeast breads without my breadmaker occasionally, but it's not a dealbreaker.

anything with the use of the term "veggies", if someone can't spell "vegetables" i have no desire to read their recipe since they probably don't have enough sense to put a good meal on the table.

Anything that involves using yeast. Yeast = dough = rising time = way too long. I'm way too impatient for that.

and puppymomma...fish cheeks are really fish cheeks. But they taste great!

From Serious Eats

I won't peel tomatoes...it just seems too fussy, and I don't mind the skins. I got over my fear of making caramel and candy, but I still won't deep fry. Luckily my husband seems to be a natural at it.

Don't be scared of ice cream makers, people! Homemade ice cream is the best. The simplest Donvier and Cuisinart ice cream makers will earn their keep within a year.
