Hell yeah! How can we let the World Record Holder for Slice Left Out the Longest (Sbarro - DFW Airport /Terminal A: 17-23June, 2007) Ever go under? Do we really want to lose another piece of history? Seriously, they suck almost as bad as the EggRoll Palace or the fake Cinna-bun joint!

A Rekindled Interest in At-Home Pizzamaking

Great piece and all, but what I do is go to onn'a my fave joints and buy a ball or two of dough off of them for a buck or so. Throw it in a pre-greased (OK, pre-Pam'ed) ziplok bag and you are good to go. Dough making is the BIGGEST ASS-WHIPPING there is when it comes to 'za makin' at mi casa, right? Buy some good stuff, let it rise and pound it out and you are (mostly) good to go! Is this cheating or a wise use of time and/or resources? The so-called "St Loius Style" of pie is trying to make a go of it here in Big D - and several of these places of popped up in Allen, Grapevine, Dallas proper and a think I saw one in The Town of The Cow (Fort Worth) a few weeks back. They all suck! This fake-ass cheese "ProVEL!" is PLASTIC and melts like a crayon on your pie. A melty yellow/white crayon on this nasty leftover matzoh "crust" that soggs out in like 5 minutes. Seriously, go and try it - it is like a mountain oyster - you need to try it to know why more don't! Yeech!

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

NY NY on Barbur off the Terwilliger curbs is run by a true NY import and has the closest to the real thing I've found. He got written up in the local pages back in '01 I think for having the largest pie in town, thus requiring a dine in only because they couldn't make a box big enough. Slices are massive and topped to order.

To add, there has been a pizza revolution going on in the DC area recently with Red Rocks, Pie-Tanza, Mia's, and Pete's Apizza adding to quite a few other fine choices. Pizza Paradiso makes a version called Atomica with spicy salami. It is great, but it needs the spiciness because the plain pizza is a bit boring. Vace, listed in a previous post, is my #2, but it is carry-out only. They do a great job with onions and olives that really make it a glorious, pungent mess. The regular pizza comes with the cheese under the sauce, so this is a terrific pie with a different take, and it works. Older choices like Ella's (substandard) and Piola (an international chain) used to be average for DC, but now they are considerably below the bar.

A Slice of Heaven: Washington, D.C.

After having tried pizza in Old Forge, PA and NYC (Luzzo's) and New Haven (Pepe's white clam) on a recent trip, I was curious to go back to 2 Amys which is my local DC fave and a place I haven't been to in a while. Every margherita I have ever had there has been stellar and this time might have been the best ever. It is a minimalist pizza. Not covered with a sauce, but what I call a tomato wash. Brilliant fresh tomato flavor, creamy dairy bite from the cheese, large pieces of fragrant basil, and a razor thin crust that is piping hot and fluffy on the edges. The light drizzle of olive oil adds a gorgeous scent, unlike the comparitively heavy hand at Luzzo's which only add slipperiness. (still, Luzzo's was a terrific pizza.)

The best pizza I have eaten in twenty years.

Pizza Mezzaluna

Free delivery, open late and a block from Bleecker. It's polished high-end Italian thin crust -- awesome pizza and as cheap as Pizza Box or Famous Joe's Pizza.

A Slice of Heaven: Washington, D.C.

you know, I've been to Ella's in the past few months and I actually like them. You have to realize that if you're comparing it to NYC, then the standards are relative. But for DC? Like Ed remarked, it's better than the run-of the-mill joint you might have in DC but I think for DC, it really is a notch above the regular chains and all. (Oh, and in regards to Ed's comments about Ella? Turns out the restaurant owner named it after his daughter).

Now on occasion, the pies at Ella's have been rushed out to me and the quality wasn't so hot and the cheese to sauce ratio was out of balance. And I like Ella's a lot better than Matchbox....since Matchbox is now in the rejuvenated area of 7th Street, and the Verizon Center is the main hub for all kinds of sporting events, I find Matchbox to be too damn crowded. I've eaten there about three times and I found that their pies don't have enough crispness to its underside. It was so thin that you couldn't pick it up either and the toppings would just slide right off the slice.

But still---for DC? It's at least a step in the right direction.

There is a new place called Moroni and Brothers that's been open for a little over a year; I haven't had a chance to stop in. The owners used to work at Pizzeria Paradiso.

Imo's Pizza in St. Louis

WAIT ONE MINUTE!!!!!
I have to come to Imo's defense. As a native St. Louisian, I have had the pleasure of being raised on imo's pizza and wouldn't have it any other way. I am a big fan of the simplicity that the pizza offers. The soft "gooey"cheese (which is a nice change from mozzarella), the slightly sweet tomato paste based sauce, and the ultra thin cracker like crust topped with whatever you like. I do agree that this style of pizza may not be the typical "NY style" pizza or any other pizza that is common. If you are looking for that kind of pizza, go for it, but if if you want the cheezy soft, paper thin, tomato goodness it brings, you really need to give it a try. The best pizza EVER!

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

There are no great NY style slice joints to be had in Portland. Escape from New York Pizza is pretty mediocre. Their crust is a little on the thick side and they are heavy handed on the cheese. Hot Lips can do a decent slice, but isn't better than your average New York corner slice.

The best places in PDX are no-slice establishments—whole pie or no pie. Apizza Scholls takes the cake for east-coast style large pies. Ken's does a great neapolitan-style pie. Carboni's on MLK, which doesn't seem to get any press, makes a good pie. They imported their wood-burning oven from Italy and seem to take their pizza pretty seriously. Their dough is handmade and their crust has a nice char. Their large pizzas are 16" though, which is not-quite NY sized.

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

Apizza is good but unless I'm mistaken, they don't do slices!!! I loved their pie but they are a bit too uppity for me to wait in line. I wait in line for very little.

Pizza is one of the 5 food groups in our house and the gold standard is John's in NYC. Bleecker st is the preferred location.

Now that I've given my credentials, my vote is for Tributes in NW portland http://portland.citysearch.com/profile/8459556/ . It's no John's but it's not about hype, location or anything other than being a east coast pizzaria transplanted to the northwest.

I will also vouch for Hotlips. I'm saying this from a less affluent student standpoint, but they have great local and organic topping combinations that keep me coming back. It may not be N.Y. but it's worth at least a try for a few bucks. They also have awesome sodas.

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

I don't think they have slices, but for a whole pie (and the experience) go to Apizza Scholls in Hawthorne.

Further down the valley... "Apizza" in Stayton is getting some buzz. Lefty's in Salem is a good bet.

Heading East? Pizza Mondo in Bend is my favorite.

And for an extended road trip head out to Baker City and try the slice of the day at Paizano's. OM NOM NOM! They are making some outstanding pizza way out there in Eastern Oregon...

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

Hey, PB, I'm so with you on Pizza a'fetta. Whenever my son came to visit me in Portland, he had to go to Cannon Beach also just for the pizza there. It's a small little joint, but definitely worth the drive. Apizza Scholls in the best in Portland, but as mentioned, get there before they open or it is a long wait.

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

As a current Reed student and native New Yorker, my advice is to just avoid Portland pizza so as to not tarnish your cherished memories of Brooklyn. Although Apizza Scholls is, as everyone seems to agree, very much worth a trip or five, I haven't yet had a decent slice (as opposed to a pie.)

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

This will be less helpful, but when you travel to Cannon Beach on the coast (AND YOU SHOULD!!!), go to Pizza a'Fetta. It's insanely good.

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

I'm with everyone else in saying Apizza Scholls. It got a lot of press when it was featured on No Reservations. Seriously amazing pizza- I might even say better than the pizza I usually have while in NYC. The crust is made by hand and cooked in a brick oven and is absolutely perfect. No more than 3 toppings on a pizza, perfect crust, and wonderful sauce. The only problem is that you have to usually line up at 4:30 to get in- once pizza sells out, it's gone for the night!

From Slice

Where Do We Get a Good Slice in Portland, Oregon?

A Beautiful Pizza at 3342 SE Belmont.

A bunch of friends of mine and I had a party earlier this summer where we each brought our favorite pie. Apizza Scholls, Ken's, and Pizzacato were all represented. It's A Beautiful Pizza blew them all out of the water. It wasn't even close.
