What Are Your Favorite Road Trip-Worthy Burgers?

Bobcat Bite, Santa Fe! Was just there last week, so the buzz is fresh.

a Trader Joe's Disappointment

You don't go to TJ's for the produce. There are a few things there that I love--a nice cheap olive oil, sun-dried tomatoes in oil, precooked brown rice (I take it for lunch), a couple of tomato pasta sauces, maple mini-wheats, and a few of the chocolate snacky things. Other than that, not much to entice.

Grilling: Corn with Chili Lime Butter

With the fantastic sweet butter & sugar corn we get in Massachusetts, all I do is add some salt, pepper, & smoky paprika to olive oil, brush the husked corn, and toss the ears directly on the grill. Turn a few times until about a quarter of the kernels start blackening, and you've got a summer memory.

Egg in a hat. Where did my mother get that from?

Summer reading and food: Anyone read these two or suggestions?

Try Jacques Pepin's "The Apprentice: My Life in the Kitchen"--very entertaining, and his down-to-earth personality really comes through. An older must-read is A.J. Liebling's "Between Meals: An Appetite for Paris" about eating in Paris in the 1920s. I also loved "Appetite for Life" and the two early Ruth Reichl books. Amanda Hesser is mostly annoying, but that's just me.

What are your favorite products from Trader Joe's?

The TJ's maple brown sugar mini shredded wheats are incredible; also, their sun-dried tomatoes in a jar, nonpariels, peanut butter pretzels (salted or unsalted), frozen key lime pie, brown rice bowls...

Apples: Take 'Em or Leave 'Em?

The best apple is the Macoun, which is actually seasonal and available only in the Northeast. They are what MacIntosh aspires to. If you can find one, try it!!
