Making plans for New Orleans Jazz Fest in May -- best restaurants?

Brothers for poboys, DiMartino's for muffelattas and plate lunches (both on the West Bank). Harbour's in Kenner for seafood. Skip Johnny's and Mothers.

Meet & Eat: Alton Brown

I did an interview with Alton about the time the second Feasting on Asphalt was out (he was touring for his book). Great interview - he actually called me early, because, as he said, he was tired of sitting and waiting for the agreed-upon time and decided to go ahead and see if I was available early.

He's honest to a fault in interviews, and the riffs and insights he had for Feasting were really interesting and funny.

Later, when he came to town for the book signing, I loaded up the family and headed up (even the kids love him). My daughter is his girl's age. She had a Hannah Montana shirt on and, as a properly-involved father would, Alton was well-familiar with her. My daughter couldn't believe she was discussing Hannah Montana with Alton Brown!

How To Make Tortillas

For dietary reasons, I need to eat whole wheat wherever I can. I've picked up whole wheat tortillas in the store on many occasions; if I wanted to make my own, which type of base ingredient should I pick up to make them? Thanks!

Peanut butter.

And I dip it out with a chilled chocolate bar.

"dinner" vs "supper"

I grew up in New Orleans and it was dinner. And all carbonated beverages were Cokes.

I'm in Mississippi now, and I hear supper much more frequently, but not exclusively. And it's still Coke.

Cook the Book: 'Bobby Flay's Burgers, Fries & Shakes'

The ones my mom used to make each year for my birthday. Two smaller patties with a wedge of cheese placed between them and sealed together. Of course, they were well-seasoned as well.

Ironic that, years later, I'd see television food shows celebrating this wacky burger idea they were promoting, and it would be what my mom did years ago.

Cook the Book: 'Real Cajun'

My mom's red beans and rice, cooked slowly all day long, filling the house with that wonderful aroma that made you feel that you were at home when you walked in the door at the end of the day. That was my life every Monday.

The Serious Eats National Doughnut Honor Roll

Terrytown Donuts is a great neighborhood place in New Orleans. Oh, and Shipley's isn't just in Oxford, Miss.; it's been a Hattiesburg, Miss. staple for decades.
