Serious Green: A Preview of 'Food, Inc.' in Theaters June 12
This film is fantastic. All people, no matter their food preference (meat eater, vegetarian, vegan) should see this. It uncovers a lot of very disturbing information. (for example, farmers can lose their livelihoods if they reuse seeds.)
I really hope this movie inspires a change in the corrupt food industry. It's about damn time.

If you live in Philly...the free mag Grid has a nice article about urban beekeeping and gives lots of info on how you can start beekeeping.
Also, these guys are great.

San Francisco Burritos at La Corneta
It's funny that the term "baby burrito" showed up in this post...I often refer to the burritos I get from Chipotle/Qdoba as 'baby burritos' or 'wet baby burritos' due to their size...being almost that of a newborn baby. A bit disgusting, I admit. But definitely accurate and funny if you have a sick sense of humor. Teehee.

In general, plastic bags and styrofoam need to be done away with. If manufacturers stop making these things, storeowners/the general public will stop buying them (duh). It's just such a shame that people still think it's ok to use materials that will...never...break...down.
Starbucks seems to be really open to suggestions these days (wonder why...). I few letters to them about adopting a recycling system in their stores could help. I'll go write mine now!

Serious Eats City Guide: Philadelphia (Way Beyond the Cheesesteak)
Tacconelli’s may be good, but unless you live in that hood (and I mean hood)....no one's going to go there. I agree that Philly has some crappy pizza...especially in the art museum area. I think all the local pizza places got together and devised a way to make hard, overcooked, oily-cheesed pizza. Yuck!
On the sushi front...I never realized how many places there are until I moved to center city. I do believe there are at least 4 sushi places within a 2 block radius. It's a wonderful thing.
Also, there should have been a best breakfast section....the winner being Sabrina's of course. Big portions and a fun environment. Mmmmmm banana and sweet cheese stuffed challah! (and their menu is veggie-friendly, yay)

Overcooked broccoli was the worst...errr....overcooked vegetables in general. I guess that's what happens when you take cooked vegetables out of a can, then cook them for another 2 hours. Delicious.

Quick Vegetarian Meals
My favorite meal to make contains any kind of pasta topped with a variety of vegetables (sauteed in olive oil and garlic). Last night I discovered my favorite combination thus far:
garlic/basil linguine (from Trader Joes) with
snow peas
normal peas (frozen)
zucchini
avocado (don't sauté this, just mix in at the end)
(top with tons of parmesan--this should help satisfy the meat eaters)
The whole thing is really quick, filling, and delicious. After including avocado, I feel like the dish is a lot more satisfying...and you get a lot more nutrients.
Serious Eats City Guide: Philadelphia (Way Beyond the Cheesesteak)
Tiffins ( Indian ) for best bargain lunch I would not touch with a pole. Too much hype and too little authenticity. Nothing Indian about it except the uncook like taste of its sauces and sweetishness of it., MSG comes to mind.
There are better bargain Indian lunches. Of course if you are a lazy SOB and rather stay put on ur butt then walk a block go for it, it does leave you full like a fool.
I give credit to its owner ( a Wharton grade ) whose marketing skills bar none is what makes the college a rave, another "Quiznos" franchise in the making.
But calling it Indian Cuisine....pluzze.
Arepas in Philly?
Sazon is excellent. I went there because of the mention on Serious Eats, and I went back again. I've been to Venezuela several times, and this is the real stuff that you'll find in Caracas. Incredible asado negro. Plus, they specialize in chocolate desserts, hot drinks, and truffles. Very friendly service.
Video: Brooklyn's Illegal Urban Beekeepers
oh please.
these guys aren't beekeepers. Anyone who has ever kept a hive can see in a second that those guys have had that hive for a few weeks at most. My father is a beekeeper in Brooklyn who has been doing it for about 10 years, and I showed him this video. He rolled his eyes and went to do something more productive than watching a couple self-satisfied hipsters wax philosophical about a passtime they know nothing about.

@heavymetalpizzaparty: I see that this is your first comment. Thanks for delurking and welcome to the Slice-Serious Eats universe. I agree that that was the funniest sentence I've heard/read in a while. I also wanted to comment about your screen name. It's intriguing. I want to know more about HEAVY METAL PIZZA PARTIES.
Video: Brooklyn's Illegal Urban Beekeepers
Further to my previous comment, I should add that I like the idea of urban beekeeping, if it were not unlawful. I've read that one theory behind the colony collapse disorder that's recently decimated commercial hives is that their bees' foraging is too limited, which perhaps leads to a weakened immune system. I can only imagine that, in contrast, Brooklyn bees are some tough suckers.
Video: Brooklyn's Illegal Urban Beekeepers
Is urban beekeeping in fact prohibited in NYC, as the title of this piece suggests? Most urban areas?
Has anyone else noticed an increasing interest in prohibited food-and-beverage related activities? It's only been in the last few years that I've seen articles on underground restaurants, selling/buying raw milk, distilling whiskey at home, urban chicken ranching, and now this bit on urban beekeeping, all mentioning that these activities are largely illegal (distilling especially seriously so, per federal law). I am beginning to think that some of the attraction to these endeavors is their very unlawfulness.
There are reasons, some perhaps stupid but others perhaps reasonable, why there are laws and ordinances against these various things. If you don't like the law, the thing to do is to work to get it changed, not to simply flout it.
Are you people growing weed, too, similarly under the rationale that it supposedly impacts nobody?

"One got stuck in my rattail and stung me,"
this sentence, wrong on many levels.
Video: Brooklyn's Illegal Urban Beekeepers
I've already mentioned I thought the video was cool and I also like the idea of beekeeping.....dittos for utilizing often neglected rooftop space in urban settings.
That being said (and yes there are better things for police officers and lawmakers to focus on), I would be very reluctant to post video on any activity that is illegal, regardless of the relative harmlessness of the endeavor. It would not be overly difficult for anyone with a stick up their derriere to look at that video and determine exactly where the rooftop in question is.
Not to be a party-pooper and I give big props to everyone doing this, but you all are simply asking for it.

If these subs are anything like the philly steak I just got ripped off for then it will look like a heavy crust...too much cheese and a hint of the so called steak and 3 sliced mushrooms with a super thin slice or 4 of the green bell pepper looking stuff

Great movie! It's very Different to see these issues and not just read about them.
Serious Green: A Preview of 'Food, Inc.' in Theaters June 12
I got to see this (for free!) in an advance screening ... The film is a bit of a re-hash of "Omnivore's Dilemma" and "Fast Food Nation" ('Omnivore' author Micheal Pollan is interviewed in the film, as was Joel Salatin, owner of Polyface Farms, who was interviewed in Pollan's book). I would say that this film is the equivalent of "An Inconvenient Truth" for food production (The production company behind this film actually produced "AIT" as well). The film defenitely aspires to the dramatic, especially during the opening title page, with businessmen with briefcases walking through a blackened field towards factory machines (evil., evil!)
Still, the film does provide many eye-opening scenes that are dramatic... huge cattle farms .... images of dead and/or diseased cows and chickens. There ARE some scenes of inside the slaughtering houses in this film (but thankfully, not too many scenes, and the film does prepare you before showing anything too gruesome). There is an un-intended (or is it?) effect of the scenes inside the slaughter-houses: The film is rated PG, meaning it is acceptable for young viewers, even though some of these images are disturbing. But think - these images are from our food production model. Shouldn't our food production methods be able to be seen by anyone? Is meat processing something that has to be rated R? This relates back to one of the film's primary themes: we would all change our eating habits if we really understood the source and production of our food.
I wouldn't say the film is necessarily a "hatchet job" ... it squarely points the finger at large agra-businesses and government agencies, but that's because they are an easy target: They DO a lot of the bad stuff that the film claims they do, and they try very hard to keep information about their business below the public radar.
Overall, I though the film was very good and eye-opening ... It has made me and my wife think about our food purchases when we go grocery shopping, so this last week instead of buying our groceries at our local "bargain warehouse" grocery store (WinCo ... if you are from the NW, you know WinCo...), we tried getting our groceries from the local farmer's market and Whole Foods. It was more expensive, but when it comes to our food and our health, we both decided that this was important. The film also states at the end of the film some statistics on how you can change the environment and food production model, including such ideas as "buying organic", "buy local", "buy in-season only produce", etc. The tough part is that many people simply do not have the funds to purchase organic or local foods (the film interviews a family of four on food stamps, who finds it cheaper to feed their family a dinner from the dollar menu at McDonald's than it is to buy just a few vegetables). They ARE more expensive ... part of the reason is our skewed farming methods, and the laws that protect and favor industrial food production. But like the film suggests, if we, as a public, change our eating and buying habits, businesses will have to follow suit if they want to keep our business.
I give this movie 4 out of 5 stars.

Man, there's some serious hatin' going on here. I personally think the idea of deep-fried mac and cheese is astoundingly awesome. I am all about the occasional over the top snacking. And yeah, her expression 14 seconds in says it all.
Serious Green: A Preview of 'Food, Inc.' in Theaters June 12
It is definitely a documentary worth seeing, yet I can't seem to understand why in NYC, it is only shown at a small theatre that doesn't even accept credit cards or online orders.

fifteen years ago sitting at a dining table on a cruise ship our tablemate discussed his job as a meat inspector for the government in a city i do not remember. He told us then, that if we even had the slightest idea of how meat is prepared produced and packaged for consumption we would never eat meat again. He refused to tell us, to him, it was not a subject to be spoken at the dinner table it was so disgusting.

No, food doesn't make you diabetic, poor food choices and excessive consumption make you diabetic. Urban life makes this utopian view of free range, organic, and local an impossibility. Where can you get enough locally grown food to feed New york cities entire population? Think of the new flu virus, a blend of human, avian and human flu viruses, only possible when animals and people mingle freely. Skip coffee, tea and spices, none of those are local.
Serious Green: A Preview of 'Food, Inc.' in Theaters June 12
While the film is a stripped-down, visual version of many of the works cited above, I think it's very communicative, and will indeed be news to many. The irony of food making people diabetic so they have to pick between medicine to help it or healthy food-egad! And ...Go Grassfed!

If you go see the film, you owe it to yourself to visit the site www.SafeFoodInc.com . There is another side to this story and if you are serious about food, you should be open to it.

Our school had dominoes pizza every month. Kids were ecstatic for that and that day saw the most fights occur out of every month. True Story.

Not a lot of new ground plowed here if you have read or watched many of the recent food politics films or read the books (Omnivore's Dilemme, Fast Food Nation, Corn, etc) but the movie is a good primer for someone who doesn't live this stuff, as I am sure many of my fellow Serious Eaters do. What was especially interesting was the Monsanto bit -- pretty chilling...

has anyone noticed how much thinner Paula looks lately? Maybe she finally has to watch her fat intake! I for one won't be eating fried lasagna, deep fried mac&cheese, fried butter balls or any of her other heart stopping recipes but she is a fun lady to watch and an animal lover. I just hope she doesn't feed this food to her dogs, it might be considered animal cruelity.
