Pizzeria Regina, Boston

Update:
I am missing Galleria Umberto for Sicilian Squares in 289 Hanover St, Boston, MA 02113 (open Mon-Sat 11am-2:30pm). Emma’s in 40 Hampshire Street (Kendall Square) Cambridge, MA 02139 (open Mon-Fri 11:30am-10pm; Sat 4pm-10pm) is also worth a try.
Newbury Pizza & Subs is closed; succeeded by Bostone Pizza in 225 Newbury St. Boston, MA 02116.

Quote of the Weekend

I have the impression, that your valuable blog loses usefulness if you still recommend to visit Di Fara’s Pizza.

I have been making the trip from Manhattan to Brooklyn’s J on Q consistently for more than two decades (sometimes accompanied by friends and/or co-workers), but from now onwards I will pause.

Not because of the price ($ 4/20 regular slice/pie), the wait, the overall dirtiness of the place, Dom’s bare hand contact with food, not wearing a hat and cutting basil with a dirty scissor. The only reason is this:

The quality of the pizza is disappointing!

I have no idea if the oven needs to be fixed, Maestro Domenico DeMarco lost his tempo when to spin the pie and to remove it from the oven or it is a mixture of both. With each visit, the bottom of my slice/pie was burnt and the whole product was neither crispy nor tasty!

Pizzeria Regina, Boston

Aside from my friends, Regina's is the ONLY thing I miss about Boston. I used to live across the street, and became a regular of sorts. I could see the neon sign and smell the ovens while sitting on my couch watching tv...

Needless to say there were many nights when I'd run out there 15 minutes before closing to get a small cheese and a couple moretti's because I could not fight off the temptation, caving in after hours of repeating to myself, in vain, "don't go to Regina's, don't go to Regina's, don't go to Regina's" like a mantra.

The crust is a little bit on the thick side compared to NY pizza, and the dough seems to give me a hangover... But I love them, they will always hold a special place in my heart.

Hahahah. Thank you, Sloppy. Ain't it true. You would be lynched by now on Chowhound if all you Di Fara negatories showed up there. :P

The internets are impartial since they are filled with DiFara propaganda. When it comes to Dom DeMarco, Chowhound makes SE look like a seething ball of hate.

@JimInHolland I think it's time for you to scurry off and create a site with more integrity than Serious Eats. Please get back to us when it's up and running. And not a second sooner. I'm gonna tell my great grandchildren to keep an eye out for it.

@Adam - Yup! Forgot that - it was an earlier rant that week.. ;)

Man, I miss good pizza (pizza really sucks here near Amsterdam) and I especially miss a particular Trenton pizzeria I left in the late 80s, for their sausage tomato pie. But no amount of nostalgia makes up for hearing the unending stream of DiFara propaganda...enough already.

Between this and AHT's undying love of Shake Shack, I've long since questioned the impartiality the Serious Eats network...

Quote of the Weekend

Perhaps Mr. Blaine should pay a visit to that magical little spot in Carroll Gardens:

http://www.nydailynews.com/ny_local/brooklyn/2008/10/06/2008-10-06_zagat_says_best_burger_pizza_bbq_found_i.html

Congratuations to Mark on nosing out his hero. Although I prefer the crust at UPN, the experience Mark has created in that space on Henry Street is well deserving of his top rating. Even if I did have to supply my own ham for my calzone last night.

Ciao,

Paulie Gee
