I am in Utah and will check it out. There are some good places to eat near Nephi. This is a good breakfast area. The cooler is a good idea. We just drove to Sedona and the best food I had was what I had made.

Cooling Chili's Heat?

hmmm, chili is chili because it is made from Chili, which tends to be hot. You could try more of a vinegar base, lay off the chili and add green peppers instead of the actual chili. I have not a clue what you will wind up with this concept, you might also look to Cincinnati Chili, more of a mole base, I love it.

Diets Work: Way or No Way?

I am a normie eater, I eat until I am full and stay away from junk food, my dad died at my age from a heart attack. My S.O. can overeat and what would make me uncomfortable,...is ok by him he on the other hand would not do well with more than one and a half drinks a month, me....well let's just say I am more comfortable with a glass of wine. Everyone it seems to me, get's their endorphines from different things. Do diets work, no, lifestyle changes and liking something more than eating seems to work I really don't like how uncomfortable I am when my jeans don't fit, that over rides my desire to have the Utah, "Training Table Cheesey Fries" this of course comes with "Fry Sauce" a mixture of mayo and ketchup, oops I mean catsup, anyway good luck to you dieters, being lighter gives you a bunch more energy.

Check out Wasatch beers, here in the great state of Utah. They are actually selling on that is 10%, have not had it think it's called The Pulminator or something like that. We just have 3.2 beer in our stores, and even though the point is not to get drunk, the real beers just have a better flavor.

Domino’s Launches Line of Bread Bowl Pastas

Oh my, let's complain about carbs every day for the rest of our lives, but eat all the fatty meats and cheeses we can, because I don't want to live past the age of 50. Carbohydrates are energy, it's simple. What can you do without energy? If you say ANYTHING in response, you're uneducated. Every single person that I have EVER heard complaining about carbohydrates does not hold a degree in Biology (or Physiology for that matter). I digress; ultimately you do whatever you want, and enjoy your myocardial infarction and, probably, death.

One more thing, about people who are obese, quit blaming it on hypothyroidism. In fact, about 7.0% of the world population actually has it.

Have a great day.

I am not sure why people are being so mean on this thread and sort of want to stay out of the ridiculousness, but I do have some answers to the question. Shelleyanne, you should definitely go with Midtown Lunch's suggestions, particularly for street meat. I agree with the earlier commentator who said to walk down to Madison Square park for Shake Shack. Avoid all of the restaurants in the Empire State building, even the ones that aren't national chains as they are completely overpriced. Try walking east where you are more likely to find local places that will be more affordable. If you are feeling particularly into walking, go down to Union Square, where there are tons of interesting and delicious places to eat, or you could absolutely make a meal from the offerings at the green market.

We're in NYC for vacation this week (leaving Wednesday), and have noticed that most of the carts are Halal food (kebabs, gyros, chicken over rice, etc). There was however, a Jamaican truck at 6th and Broadway (think it was Broadway) that had some excellent jerk chicken.

Cilantro: Way or No Way?

Way, but it wasn't always so. I think the first time or two I didn't really know what I was eating. Then, one day, a bell went off and I realized I liked it. I really, really liked it. It took a few more months to convince my hubbs, who is now securely on the cilantro wagon.

Big time WAY, but I can't even keep in the the house, as the hubby is a HUGE NO WAY! I would eat it by the bunch if I could, but he can't come near me if he even smells it on my breath. :(

@Shellyanne - I live 40 minutes north of Sedona in Flagstaff, holler on SE next time you head down that way and I can recommend some good eats in Flagstaff. It's limited, but there are some pretty tasty spots if you know where to go. How you know a cook doesn't cook ...

When "Two Eggs Any Style" are offered - it's assumed they mean one of three things: Scrambled, fried "up" (uncooked film over yolk) or fried "over" (film on yolk is cooked by flipping the eggs so the "up" side briefly touches the pan). If a restaurant wants to stay away from poaching, they usually list something like "except poached" or "no poached." I had to switch to poached eggs after many attempts at soft boiled proved completely futile.

We used to eat in a place called Lenny's in Clearwater. BF was a pre-work regular. There was only one cook in the whole joint who could poach a decent egg. When the waitress came for our order, I'd have to look in the kitchen to see who was cooking. If all I could see was the waist of a pair of cook's pants, I'd order the poached eggs. (The only guy who knew how to poach an egg was amazingly tall. To this day I don't know if he has a face.) If he wasn't cooking, I'd order something else. If it's one thing I hate, it's being served what amounts to "shell off hard-boiled eggs."

The lack of poached eggs can point to a few things. 1) They need more attention than the cook is able/willing to give during a b'fast rush; 2) Lack of burner space - though you can do a shallow pan of simmering water on a griddle and of course 3) Inability. Higher end restaurants (read: brunch) can usually poach eggs.

Another giveaway: Listing Eggs Benedict as featuring "our special cheese sauce." (Egads.) THIS is truly a place that has no clue about Eggs Bene.

From Talk

How you know a cook doesn't cook ...

@renzata--oops! I am sorry, I missed your earlier comment, but yes, I feel the same way--if there are poached eggs offered elsewhere, it seems as if they should be more flexible about substitutions.

But again, no harm in asking, so long as the phrase "between your knees" is not uttered.

A paradox: why does that scene always make me want a mayo-based sandwich rather than the toast Nicholson is ordering?

Carry on....

In Vegas there is so much to choose from anymore, it's ridiculous. Celeb chefs are the name of the game in Vegas these days, and they have the best of the market to choose from. As far as produce, meat and seafood goes, they pretty much get first pick of the country flown in daily since they have so much casino money to play with, so it is worth it to splurge on a chef who knows how to make the most of the offerings.

Mario Batali is one such chef, and his restaurants in the Venetian are a great choice. B&B is more upscale and the food is superb. The seating is tight and the music is alternative rock cranked too loud, which is odd, but the terrific food and the banter with your neighboring diners makes it more than worth enduring. His enoteca in the Venetian's shopping galleries has a lovely ambiance with pseudo al fresco dining under the faux sky, and a lower price point.

Craftsteak (Tom Collicchio) in the MGM Grand is wonderful if you want great beef (Kobe, Wagyu). The rest of the menu at Craftsteak is wonderful, as well. Also in the MGM is Joel Robuchon - both the Atelier and the flagship restaurant - a little taste of Paris. Another cool thing about the MGM is that they have ongoing live lion shows in the casino throughout the day, free of charge.

I could go on, but I don't want to overwhelm. Enjoy your journey, and your stay in L.A.!

Cheers,

~ Paula

Sorry, I can't help you with the street food, but your "we will be walking" made me giggle a bit at the thought of drive thru eating in New York. Imagine a Nathan's Famous drive thru in Times Square where the Marine recruiting kiosk used to be?

But as I mentioned in my earlier reply, I think that if there are poached eggs elsewhere on the menu, I'd feel differently about it (although I start to get annoyed when people order way off menu).

I grew up in Boulder and spent a lot of my wayward youth in Denver before moving to NY.

One of my favorite sushi restaurants is in Denver, Sushi Den, if you find yourself there at night, it's really delicious and inventive.

Boulder is starting to have some really world-class food as well - Frasca (where I haven't eaten yet, but really want to) and The Kitchen is very good, very locally focused. Lamb and Bison are always a good choice in CO. And the farmer's market there on Wed. / Sat. is lovely - If you're going by in the afternoon the Boulder Dushanbe Tea House is absolutely beautiful and serves very good tea and pretty decent food as well.

From Talk

How you know a cook doesn't cook ...

Am I the only person thinking of Jack Nicholson in Five Easy Pieces?

I don't see any harm in asking--I've asked lots of times if dishes could be made without meat and cheese and been told no, the dishes were already assembled. And I totally understand--no 'chicken salad' talk from me.

Question: Let's say hypothetically that the OP was wanted poached eggs, toast, and bacon. She notices there are poached eggs specified on the menu for Eggs Benedict and they can obviously do poached eggs in that restaurant. Is she then justified in getting upset, because she wants all of the components of the dish, only without white sauce and with regular rather than Canadian bacon?

Domino’s Launches Line of Bread Bowl Pastas

I ate one of these fool things. Domino's was giving them away for free last week. I had the sausage/marinara version. It actually tasted pretty good, but it was more like breadsticks with some dipping sauce dumped on top, and about 5 pieces of penne and an ounce of cheese. So yeah, mostly just breadstick-y. Definitely not worth $5.99, and not so amazing or delicious that I'd order it again. But it was a decent free lunch.
