Cook the Book: 'Recipes from an Italian Summer'

When the tomatoes are ripe, it's time for bruschetta. We always grow extra basil for this.

I love all kinds of pork, but since I have to pick one it has to be bacon. Just a good quality brand, perfectly cooked, is hard to beat. And it makes so many dishes taste better, too.

Mother's Day Giveaway: Peanut Butter & Co. Chocolate Bonbons

My mother is not a good cook, but my mother-in-law was a terrific cook (and fortunately she taught her son everything she knew.) It's hard to pick from so many dishes I love, but I'll go with the Italian Beef with her apple pie for dessert.

Cook the Book: 'Rose's Heavenly Cakes'

It was a strawberry cake my mother made me for my birthday about 35 years ago.

Cook the Book: 'My Bread'

I've had good luck making bread, I can't think of any that didn't turn out well except the one or two that I overcooked. There's a Wheat Walnut Bread I make that I really like, but the rest of the family prefers my White or Sourdough.

Cook the Book: 'Italian Easy'

Reading the comments made me realize how many Italian recipes are easy. One of my favorites is bruschetta in the summer when we have fresh tomatoes and basil from our garden. It makes a great simple dinner with a grilled chicken breast or salmon fillet.

Popcorn. There's a lot of popcorn grown in Indiana, about a quarter of all grown in the country.

My favorite would depend on what I'm in the mood for. It might be a simple chicken curry, a stir-fry using whatever veggies are in the fridge or a pasta dish made with cannellini and tuna.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Russ & Daughters Brunch Package

A real New York bagel, the kind that you can't get anywhere else. That's one of the things I miss most since moving to the Midwest.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: La Quercia

It's not very original but I do love it with melon. I also like it in scrambled eggs and in pasta dishes.

My greatest disaster was when I was making Christmas cookies when I was a girl. I think there was something wrong with the sugar because I was sure I used sugar rather than something else, but the cookies weren't nearly as sweet as they should have been. They looked nice, though!

Definitely bagels--there's nothing like a real New York bagel. They just don't taste the same anywhere else.

I'm usually not very interested in how cookies look, just how they taste, but I do remember some black & white cookies I made that looked great.

The first cookies I ever baked were sugar cookies with my father.

Seriously Delicious Holiday Giveaway: Zingerman's Culinary Adventure Society

Of all the places I've travelled, the best food overall has been in New Orleans. I've never had a bad meal there. There are so many things there that you don't often see outside of the area, from beignets to tasso, and it's all served with such gusto. It's truly a food lover's dream.

Cook the Book: 'The Art and Soul of Baking'

Difficult choice, since I love so many types of cookies, but I will go with the traditional--cut-out sugar cookies (decorated, of course.) That's the first thing I remember baking (with my Dad's help) when I was a child and I'm still doing it once a year.

My favorite is the traditional pumpkin pie, made from scratch, not from a can, with my husband's fantastic pie crust.

The best dessert I've had was a Lemon Meringue Pie that my husband made for me and his mother (he doesn't like Lemon Meringue.) It had a hazelnut crust that was just perfect with the tart creamy filling and the light meringue.

Cook the Book: 'Dishing Up Vermont'

I'm from Indiana and the state is famous for it's corn and popcorn (Orville Redenbacher was a Hoosier.) We're also famous for pork tenderloin sandwiches, though I haven't been impressed with the few I've had since I moved here. We have Sugar Cream Pie, too, which is self-explanatory.

My favorite is baklava, which should be eaten in small pieces or it can be overwhelming. But one or two bites--perfection!

Cook the Book: '100 Best Vegetarian Recipes'

For comfort food, it's macaroni and cheese, for more gourmet meals it's ratatouille (preferably with homegrown veggies.) I use Julia Child's recipe, modified slightly depending on what I have on hand.

As long as the beef is fresh from the local butcher shop and it's not overcooked, all I need is a little mustard and I'm happy.
