Man. So tired of being left out here in Detroit.

Zagat gives Five Guys kudo's.

What a joke.

What about all the gurgers that Detroit, Milwaukee and Clebveland have.

I would put Miller's Bar and Red Coat Tavern here in Detroit up against any Five Guys burger.

I've had the Five Guys Burger here in our Oak Park area. A tad...and I mean a tad above a Wendy's burger. Does it take real Mid westerners who eat real meat to tell the rest of the country that what they eat is not that good?

Man...ticks me off. Millers was in GQ's top 25. They nailed it. RedCoat will give you REAL BEEF and it's big.

Five guys has great atmosphere. People are fun and hard working, but by golly, they don't make that good aburger.

Oaky, except for the bone marrow, I am officially somewhat grossed out. The eyeball thing, did me in.

And I only ate the bone marrow in small bites at the end of the steak when I was a kid.

Or the pork chop. I'm from Michigan, this shouldn't bother me. I know where food comes from and how it is slaughtered. But looking at the half pig face and the head of bone, got to me.

Sorry. I'm sure it was delicious.

U.S. Regional Hot Dog Styles T-Shirt

Michigan has no Hot Dog style. It has a Detroit style that has spread thru the state.

See the link on RELATED above. Dead on. the T-shirt is not close to being correct. Looks like just mustard. Missing the chili and the raw onion.

Good Lord, maybe it's just me, but having to sit in the dark and look at a can of overgrown adult peas, cold on my plate...and not being able to leave until I ate them, is something I still remember.

Even to this day, i love split pea soup, but cannot stomach eating even those tender young peas they push now.

Big Peas in a Delmonte can....yuk.

But then again....mom made everything else in a black skillet. AND....maybe I am the weird one...I used to enjoy the stuff outta the tin containers as a kid.

MAYBE THAT'S WHY I HAVE BORDERLINE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE NOW.

Sorry mom.

If you live near the Alibi, get the pizza.
Download the menu and enjoy.

For the sake of the article, the Detroit Free Press does this every year, including burger places, ice creams, etc.

From Slice

We also have a Cottage Inn right up the street in Birmingham, MI. I have not tried their pizza because of the so many other good places right around us.

the guys back in the day would go to PizzaPapalis for the deep dish and it was a hoot (30 years ago).

From Slice

The Detroit Metro Area's Top 25 Pizzas

It's a pretty good list. But the Freep omitted The Alibi in Troy that has one of the best pizzas in the area.

Louis, Buddy's, Shields are all out of the same mold as each other and are good. Amici's, hell, is at the end of my block and is good but overpriced. Georgio's is right across the street from where I work and have never been in there (now I will go)

Green Lantern is the kind of pizza that emotes incredible love for pepperoni grease and reminds me of my youth.

I feel lucky having a Buddies, Jets, Amici's, Shields and Alibi in close proximity to where I work and live.

From A Hamburger Today

Are Pickles a Burger Condiment?

I agree. Pickels would be a condiment if they were relish and served in those little packets you get at the ball park.

A pickle or pickle slice would be considered a topping I think. And yes, I put them on my burgers.

From A Hamburger Today

Cook the Book: 'Burger Bar'

Sharp Cheddar Cheese, Romaine or a leafy lettuce, Tomato, mustard, ketchup, fresh pickles (not the sweet ones), fresh onions (chopped, white), Buttermilk ranch dressing, a chipolte sauce dressing mixed in and some sauteed' mushrooms.

On a plain bun. Yum.

From A Hamburger Today

Quote of the Day: Boooooo, Sarah DiGregorio, Boooooo

Okay. I apologize to Sara. I didn't mean to vent on her like that but the article and some of the comments on the site came across as a bit purist.

Especially the part about the twinkie.

From A Hamburger Today

Quote of the Day: Boooooo, Sarah DiGregorio, Boooooo

Okay I don't often say this, but she's truly an uniformed person who lives in a bubble and doesn't know what it's like to live in an area where Kobe beef is not the main item on the menu.

I live in the Detroit area. I would put our hamburger area restaurants like Millers and Red coat Tavern and even my favorite like Bagger Dave's here in Berkley up against some of her New York Burgers.

White Castle and it's close cousin Top Hat, were a mainstay for us and a treat when I was a kid growing up in a one income, blue collar home back in the 60's. We ate the bad cuts of beef and mom made them taste good.

White Castle is still a good bargain. AND WHO THE HELL (on her post) doesn't remember what it was like as a kid to eat a twinkie?

Man....she can't be a food critic. You don't what's good unless you know where you came from and what you ate as a kid.

And till you eat all the bad old good stuff, you have nothing to measure anything by.

And if someone stuck a White Castle in front of me, I wouldn't turn it down because it looks "Creepy".

From Talk

Hot Dog Hootenanny Report

Hey, Hotdoglover!
I live north of Detroit in Berkley.
How do the hot dogs you ate compare to the Koegel's, like they use here at the different coney's?

When I want a coney dog, I usually head for Leo's. i think they use the Koegel there.

From Slice

The Detroit Metro Area's Top 25 Pizzas

I've eaten some of the greats -- Una Pizza, John's, Grimaldis, Ginos, Home Run -- so i am pretty particular. Supinos is outstanding pizza. Michigander's like square pizza, and you really can't compare it to a thin crust. Tomato apizza is another great pizza.

Now, if you really want square -- Buddy's is great.

Deep Dish -- Pizzapapalis is great.

Alibi is not that great. It suffers from the same problem of many Michigan pizza. You look at the bottom of the crust and you see grid marks from a pan. This leaves a horrible aftertaste in your mouth. But, locals seem to like it.

I'll pass.

Why bother with the pig's eyeballs? Because they are DELICIOUS. I just want to emphasize that - the meat in the socket was extremely tender and gelatinous, like a braised trotter. Soooo....that's WHY :)

I don't want to get into bugs and testicles right now, but I have very similar sentiments about those as well! More on that some other time!

From Serious Eats: New York

FergusStock at The Breslin

I'm sure pig's eyes are edible, but why bother? I know I'm man enough, but I just don't see the point of testing our mettle by eating bugs, eyeballs, Fugu, or boars testicles just to prove that we can.

That said, April made us an awesome dish of cod sperm at John Dory, and we loved it.

I am sad today, folks. I tried to clean the skull but had no idea what i was doing and now it is in the trash can, with the bones severely softened and meat still clinging to the eye socket.

I am jealous beyond belief, ugh! I had the roasted marrow at Prune this spring, it was one of the most memorable meals of my life. That head looks decadent and wonderful, but I have to admit, the eye is all yours :)

Egads that all looks killer-diller!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! And I don't use exclamation points lightly. Robyn your pix are so good I was licking my monitor screen, then I realized it was just a photo of lamb neck.

From Serious Eats

U.S. Regional Hot Dog Styles T-Shirt

Yeah, the shirt is related to food, but what did the guy use to do his research on this one? He must have went to google image search and hit "I'm feeling lucky. DC is wrong. Do NYC metroers really have that diverse a hot dog palate that they need three times the representation?

From Serious Eats

U.S. Regional Hot Dog Styles T-Shirt

The ten bucks (great deal!) is only until midnight tonight, then it goes to $15 when a newer shirt goes on sale, but you can still get free shipping. I posted about this in Talk last night, and noted that there is also a Ramen-related shirt, and a baked doughboy. I'm not a fan of ramen, but I know a lot of people are...but the doughboy shirt was my favorite.

There's also a bacon one that I didn't like, but if you click around, you'll find it. :-)

For the procrastinators, or those who are thinking of buying for Christmas, just FYI these shirts don't stay on sale forever. Only the top 20 shirts each week are kept for another week, so don't wait too long.

From Serious Eats

U.S. Regional Hot Dog Styles T-Shirt

Scoreboard44: That's not the only error. The Sonoran hot dog shown is from Tucson, not Phoenix, and it's serious business.
