Apples: Take 'Em or Leave 'Em?

I love the way apples taste, but alas, I'm allergic. I rather enjoy breathing, so no apples for me. It makes me sad, but I've learned to live without.

PB&J or Grilled Cheese?

Grilled cheese without a doubt. I could definitely live without peanut butter and jelly in sandwich form. Peanut butter and jelly as separate items? No, but defiitely in sandwich form. I seriously love grilled cheese.

What to do with Raspberries?

Macerate them with raspberry flavored vodka and a little sugar and serve it over pound cake. The raspberries soak up a lot of alcohol, and they taste so good. We've done it with strawberries and strawberry flavored vodka. Oh, and don't forget the homemade whipped cream!

Care Package for Marine Boyfriend / Contemplation of Meltiness

We send my brother beef jerkey, slim jims, lemonheads(his very favorite candy), gum, powdered gatorade(he asked for it so he could share it with his soldiers), trail mix...basically, as long as it wasn't chocolate or dangerous type items(glass bottles) it was good. Also, if he makes a special request, I go out of my way to get it or let it be known that he wants it, as some things are hard to get even in the commissary in Germany. Another thing we send frequently is the Crystal Light On The Go packets that you can put in bottled water or even in the camelback bags. They make a lot of good flavors and different types. He likes the Immunity(Cherry Pommegranite), the Energy(Wild Strawberry), the lemonade and the green tea. I'm going to send him the Hydration(Berry Splash) one to see how he likes it.

From Talk

Great cream cheese mix-ins...

I love cream cheese mixed with chocolate chips, a little vanilla extract and some powdered sugar. Form into a ball and let it set up a little bit in the fridge, and you've got a dessert cheese ball that is delicious with graham cracker sticks.

From Talk

Skippy or Jif? (Thanks Bessfour!)

We always had Peter Pan growning up. My dad used to love (and still eats on occasion) waffles or pancakes smothered in chunky Peter Pan and syrup. I prefer chunky peanut butter too, but now that I'm older, I really don't care about the brand.

I embarrass my husband with my restaurant ordering habits

I lucked out in the husband department. I'm extremely picky with my food and have been brought to tears by an extremely mean waiter. The hubby and I were engaged at this point, and we went to a Mexican place for my birthday. I requested a cheese quesadilla with nothing else but a side of sour cream (I'm vegetarian). Not too hard, right? Wrong. The first time it had all the chicken and veggies in it. The second time it had chicken and lettuce, and the third time it had chicken only. I was getting more and more angry and started to cry. I only cry when I'm extremely angry, and he pushed me to it. The waiter then proceded to ask my husband what the heck was wrong with me and how he could stand being with somebody who was so picky, and that I should grow a pair and stop crying. Well, that was enough. We got the manager over and explained what I wanted, what happened to the food each time and what the waiter said. We got our entire meal comped. My husband knows that I'm very picky with my food, and he still loves me. He may make fun of me in a joking manner, but he's never serious. I wouldn't be married to someone belittled my food preferences, but that's just me. He obviously has some good qualties or you wouldn't be with him. Just talk to him about it, and don't be afraid to tell the food workers that you want more lettuce. After all, you are paying for the food.

The End Is Near: 600 Starbucks Stores Will Close

Europe has Starbucks as well. Where I live in Germany there aren't any in my town, but drive 15-20 minutes either way and you can find them. At least in Frankfurt, Darmstadt and Heidelberg. I much prefer going to a local cafe though. It's like Lewis Black says...
"If you walk to the end of the block, there sits a Starbucks. And directly across the street -- in the exact same building as that Starbucks -- there is... another Starbucks. There is a Starbucks across the street from a Starbucks! And ladies and gentlemen, THAT is the end of the universe."

I have a weakness for limes. They are little bits of tangy deliciousness. I don't even need an alcoholic drink to put them in.

If allowed only one - Salt or Pepper - What would you choose?

Without a doubt, salt. I love to put it on watermelon and cantelope. It just makes it taste so much sweeter. I may look more like my mother, but i am proud to have inherited my father's love of salt.

Eats for a Sunburned Moron?

I always liked eating ice pops when I got sunburned. As far as the remedies, mix 1 cup skim milk, 4 cups cool water, and some ice cubes and dip a cloth in it. Cold compress = awesome. Also, a cool (not freezing cold) bath with half a cup of cooked oatmeal can help relieve the itching. If you don't like the oatmeal idea, you can add baking soda to a bath of tepid water, but instead of towling it off at the end, let it dry on you. Hope this helps!

Kill Them with Kindness?

I can't think of a good reason that my worst enemy would be at my house, but I probably wouldn't invite her into my house to begin with because I'd be terrified that she'd un-hinge her jaws and swallow me whole! I am a failure at being diplomatic.

A Lesson for Omnivores: Vegetarian Myths, Debunked

I've been vegetarian since I was 2. I got violently ill and ended up in the hospital with dehydration 3 times. The first time, my parents thought they had undercooked something and gave me food poisoning. After the third time, they told me I didn't have to eat anything I didn't want to. I haven't purposefully had meat since then. I'm not vegan...I would die without butter and cheese. When my husband and I were dating, he and one of my friends slipped a small piece of chicken into something I was eating when I was out of the room. I immedietely got sick. Yeah, I still married him. I hate that people willfully try to sneak meat into my food. I respect your decison to eat meat. It shouldn't be that hard for you to respect my decision not to.

From Talk

Haagen-Dazs or Ben & Jerry's ?

Ben & Jerry's all the way! The Half-Baked is so delicious! It's the Chocolate Fudge Brownie ice cream mixed with their Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough ice cream---swooning now!!

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

My worst enemy is my worst enemy because he chose to be. If he showed up at my door I doubt he would be surprised if I didn't open it. And I won't open it because while I may have forgiven, I haven't forgotten, and I don't need to, or wish to, spend time with that person. There is nothing to say.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

@susquehanna- no way. if they want to go fishing that bad, then it's no baggies only pockets for the ride home.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

@dearrie: Brilliance! Yes! But will you be in the can with your enemy to flush the results of their suffering? LOL.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

@susquehanna- you could flush the leftover's. no evidence no lawsuit.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

@dearrie: Ha! That would fix 'em, right? But, you know, some lawsuit-happy enemy who gets wise to that trick might also refer to that batch of ex-lax brownies as a tort. Yikes!

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

enemies are the reason they invented chocolate flavored ex-lax and brownie batter. you mix the two together and walla. gets rid of an assortment of personal problems. pairs well with coffee, tea, and milk.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

My so-called "enemies" are quite pathetic and deserve only pity and kindness. They likely suffer from some personality or mood disorder and are in need therapy and/or medication. Not my ill will.

@gentlyferal: Folk magic is intriguing. A dear librarian friend of mine studies it, as well. And there's certainly a legitimate claim that herbs can remedy toxic characteristics in people. Many conventional psychoactive medications contain chemicals that are plant-derived.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

Hmm, my worst enemy? I'd have to go with @chiff on this. Definitely a boot up their butt. Because my worst enemy, as far as I'm concerned, deserves no kindness from me and while I think said person would (to quote Saki) be improved by death, he's not worth the jail time.

That said, if it was just someone I don't like and who doesn't like me, I'd pull out the stops. The last thing I'd want is to give fodder that I'm a lousy cook or rude or a terrible hostess. Word would spread and I'd be the bad one. And you never know, maybe common ground could be found. I've certainly become friends with people I initially couldn't stand, and some of those friendships have been enduring.

From Talk

Kill Them with Kindness?

I'm a student of folk magic. One of the classic (and most effective) ways to "fix" someone is to dose their food with the appropriate herb or formula. Not anything literally poisonous - no, nothing so crude or traceable. No, just a little something to completely ruin their luck.

Or inspire generosity or love for you, if you'd rather.

What foods are uniquely '80s'?

As a former 80s teen, I can make a whole grocery list of treats, goodies, delicacies and delights that first appeared on the food scene or rose to popularity in the 80s.

Diet coke
cherry coke
cherry 7-Up
Snapple beverages
fruit snacks
microwave popcorn
Capri Sun pouched beverages
juice boxes
Cinnamon Toast Crunch cereal
sun-dried tomatoes
pasta salad
Nerds candy
Bonkers candy
Blue raspberry flavored items (including Berry Blue Kool-Aid which looked like Windex but was very tasty stuff!)
Frozen yogurt (the sweet, ice-creamy type, not the more acidy stuff you get at places like Pinkberry in today's times)
"Gourmet" jellybeans (like the Jelly Belly brand, made popular by then-head-honcho Reagan)
Stuffed baked potatoes
Fried potato skins
Mozzarella sticks

Dang it, now I have an urge to put on a miniskirt and some flavored lip gloss and munch on some fruit snacks and sip a Capri Sun beverage while listening to "Let's Dance" by David Bowie!

So, What Did You Make?

#1 son made a cheese plate with brie, Stilton, extra sharp cheddar, and Cantal with assorted crackers and homemade puff pastry cheese straws;

Sister made 14 lb. roasted turkey with sage and rosemary; mashed potatoes; assorted stuffings for different palates: with mushrooms, without mushrooms, in bird, baked alone;

I made roasted Brussel Sprouts; sweet potatoes with Calvados, peaches, and currants; pureed parsnips; classic homemade cranberry sauce, and roasted cranberry sauce with orange zest, jalapeno, cardamom, cloves, and cinnamon sticks; and homemade gravy.

Choice of pinot noir, beaujolais nouveau, chardonnay, and riesling

Dessert: homemade pumkin pie, homemade pecan pie; fresh apple and raspberry cobbler with ice cream.

All enjoyed with our 82 year old demented mother, who wasn't hungry.....

So, What Did You Make?

Started with guo tie and xi jiang tiao before the main meal. As an antipasto, there was a spicy mound of thinly shaved fuqi feipian followed by the pasta course of liang pi. Gluttonous, I snacked on zi ran chao yang rou jia mo on the side. In lieu of turkey, I had a bit of Peking Duck, finishing up the meal with samples of fruit-flavored jerky, red bean cake and scallion pancakes. Thanksgiving doesn't end after the first meal, of course, so I ended up having seconds of besan and kaju barfi followed by cocktails and vegetarian sushi. Thanks to Serious Eats, I was able to turn what was to be a solitary Thanksgiving into a culinary adventure in Flushing.

So, What Did You Make?

With drinks: raw almonds roasted with e.v. olive oil, sprinkled with fleur de sel; gougeres (from Roses Bakery); tiny empanadas filled with ground beef and apple chutney and celery with creamed cheese (Janis).
At the table: Naragansett turkey, salted the day before, 10 minutes after FedEx dropped him off, brought from the fridge about 2 hours before going into a 400' preheated oven, slathered in Delittia buttered cheese cloth, oven temp. reduced to 350' after an hour (thanks Alice W. & Julia C). A dressing made with cubed, stale rustic bread, sauteed onions & celery, thyme and parsley from the garden, and sausage (I made J. C. recipe). Make-ahead mashed potatoes (Pioneer Woman, potatoes from our CSA farmer). Gravy made from the drippings of a previously roasted free-range turkey, using turkey stock and stock from a roasted capon (wow, what a flavor boost, and thanks to Brooke29 for the post that inspired me to buy slow cooker!). Riced yams and a molded salad with raw cranberries & vegetables (Anna). Roasted vegetables (Beth). Creamed onions (Janis). There were bowls of cranberry-currant-walnut sauce (M. Stewart) with Gran Marnier added, cranberry, shallot, dried cherry compote, cranberry, quince chutney (SE, Lidia B), and pickled peaches. There were a number of bottles of white and red wine brought by our eight guests.
After a pause, there were pies from Roses: Bramley apple, pumpkin, and pecan along with the pint of cream mentioned elsewhere (almost ran out!). There was Billecart-Salmon Rose and coffee, later.

About Schnauzer_Mama

Website:

Location: Germany

About: I'm a vegetarian. I have a spoiled Schnauzer, and he's pretty cool.

Favorite foods: Grilled cheese, carrots, potatoes in any form...if it doesn't contain meat, I'm pretty good to go.

Last bite on earth: Carrots, sunflower seeds and ranch dressing all on one plate, a grilled cheese sandwich and Jagermeister mixed with Red Bull...oh yeah, and a ginormous Helles.
